The black-dial, 39 mm leather-strap model is 10.5 mm thick and 46 mm lug-to-lug, with 15 bar water resistance and no date. Hanhart’s headline feature is its HD12 case treatment, which the manufacturer says reaches up to 1,200 HV in surface hardness; that figure is a company claim, not an independent measurement.
What is the Hanhart Pioneer Preventor HD12?
The Pioneer Preventor HD12 is a German-made, classic-styled three-hand automatic watch. Hanhart’s official listing researched for this review is the 39 mm black-dial version on a leather strap. The model family also includes a blue dial and other strap choices, so configuration matters when comparing photos, specifications and prices.
Independent coverage of a blue-dial configuration characterizes the design as restrained and the largely brushed case as suitable for everyday sports-watch use. Those are the reviewer’s impressions rather than measured performance findings. The main point of distinction across the range is the HD12-treated steel case, rather than an unusually complicated movement or display.
Case dimensions and wrist fit
For the black 39 mm model, Hanhart lists a 46 mm lug-to-lug length, 10.5 mm thickness and 20 mm lug width. The 39 mm diameter is relatively compact by contemporary sports-watch standards, but diameter alone does not determine how a watch wears: lug-to-lug span, wrist shape and strap choice also matter. Use the 46 mm length as a useful comparison point, not a guarantee of fit.

What does Hanhart’s HD12 hardened steel mean?
Hanhart says it hardens the case steel by carbon diffusion and then applies a transparent PVD hard coating. On its product page, the company reports surface hardness of up to 1,200 HV (Vickers) for HD12 steel, compared with around 220 HV for conventional 316L steel. Hanhart describes the treatment as making the case more resistant to scratches.
Those hardness figures and the scratch-resistance statement are manufacturer claims; the sources available for this review do not provide independent measurements or comparative scratch testing. The treatment is therefore a potentially meaningful materials feature, but it should not be read as a promise that the case cannot be scratched or marked.

Movement, display and power reserve
The black 39 mm listing specifies a Soprod SOP P024 automatic movement operating at 4 Hz, with 25 jewels and a stated 38-hour power reserve. The dial has three hands and no date. That keeps the display clean and avoids a date window, while the reserve is modest compared with watches designed to run for multiple days off the wrist.
Crystal, crown and water resistance
Hanhart specifies a convex sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment, a screw-down crown and a screw-down case back. Its stated water resistance is 15 bar (15 ATM) according to DIN 8310. These are the manufacturer’s specifications; they do not by themselves establish suitability for a particular water activity, which depends on the watch’s condition and the relevant use guidance.

Strap and bracelet configurations
The exact official configuration covered here is the black dial on a leather strap, with 20 mm lugs. Hanhart also lists a steel bracelet as a separate option. A 20 mm replacement or quick-release strap may be a plausible alternative, but confirm lug width, attachment style and compatibility before buying; the listing does not establish third-party fit or availability.
An independent review of the blue configuration reports quick-release spring bars and tool-free micro-adjustment on its bracelet. Treat those details as observations about the reviewed bracelet setup, not as evidence that the leather-strap version includes a bracelet or its adjustment hardware.

When checked on 2026-10-07, Hanhart’s official page listed the black leather-strap model at €1,140 including VAT and the 20 mm steel bracelet separately at €340. These are live listing prices and can change; regional taxes, currency and availability may differ.
Mainspring Watch Magazine’s blue-dial review gave €1,295 / $1,528 for the configuration and market context it covered, and separately mentioned a higher listing at a US retailer. Those are the reviewer’s dated price observations, not directly comparable current prices for Hanhart’s black leather-strap listing. Who should consider the Preventor HD12?
The watch merits a closer look if you want a conventional three-hand automatic with classic German styling, a date-free dial, a case under 11 mm thick and a manufacturer-promoted hardened-steel treatment. Its 39 mm diameter and 46 mm lug-to-lug length give concrete dimensions to compare against watches that already fit you.
It is less compelling if your priorities are a long power reserve, independently verified scratch-resistance results, or the most straightforward low-cost strap or bracelet package. The P024’s listed 38-hour reserve and the separate bracelet price are important practical trade-offs to weigh alongside the styling and case treatment.
