The Alpina Alpiner Extreme California’s mixed Roman-and-Arabic dial gives the watch a character most sports watches lack. The proposition is less unusual elsewhere: a substantial cushion-shaped steel case, rubber strap, automatic movement and 200 m water resistance. It is an appealing combination if the dial is the point; at its current US listed price of $1,995 for the brown 39 × 40.5 mm reference, the case and strap need to work for you too.
What makes the dial “California”?
A California dial combines Roman numerals on one half with Arabic numerals on the other, typically alongside markers such as dashes and triangles. Alpina uses that mix on the Alpiner Extreme California and says the layout is intended to make the time easier to read. That is the brand’s design rationale, not a demonstrated legibility test.
The effect is unmistakable: the dial interrupts the familiar rhythm of markers found on many sports watches, including Alpiner Extreme models with a more conventional triangle motif. It gives this version a clear identity, though it is also a more specific taste. If you want a restrained, uniform dial, the California layout may feel busy rather than distinctive.
Which Alpiner Extreme California is this?
The reference matters because the original black model and the current US listing are not the same watch. The 2023 Fratello Watches article covered the black-dial 41 mm AL-525BB4AE6. Alpina’s US listing, accessed in 2026, is for the brown-dial AL-525BRG3AE6, with a 39 × 40.5 mm case. A later California-dial extension in the smaller case format is also reported by WatchTime.

- The Alpiner Extreme Automatic is a 41 x 42.5mm rugged sport watch.
- At the heart of the design, a strong brushed-finish cushion case featuring a black dial with a date window at 3 o'clock and a see-through case-back.
- The integrated black rubber strap (with no joining link with the case), made of textured rubber offers as much comfort as strength and modernity.
- The rubber grip allows for ease of handling with bare hands or with gloves.

What the current brown US listing includes
Alpina’s US listing for the AL-525BRG3AE6 specifies a brown dial, stainless-steel case, black rubber strap with a folding push-button clasp, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and 200 m / 20 bar water resistance. The listed functions are hours, minutes, seconds and date. The case is 11.5 mm thick.

- Silver-Tone Stainless Steel 37.5mm Case

The automatic AL-525 is identified by Alpina Singapore as based on the Sellita SW200, with a 38-hour power reserve, 26 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour. Fratello likewise described the earlier AL-525 as SW200-1 based and gave a 38-hour reserve and 26 jewels. Those are source-attributed specifications, not independent measurements.
Does the shape and size make sense?
The cushion-like case is a strong part of the watch’s visual character, but it also competes with the dial for attention. Fratello’s Michael Stockton noted a resemblance to the Panerai Radiomir in the original 2023 article and judged that the 11.5 mm thickness and squarish layout should wear well on average-to-larger wrists. That is his editorial assessment, not a universal fit guarantee or a report of our own handling.

The current brown reference’s 39 × 40.5 mm measurements differ from the original model’s 41 mm diameter and 49.5 mm lug-to-lug figure. Those numbers suggest a different wrist presence, but case shape, strap articulation and wrist proportions all affect fit. Try it on if possible, especially if you are choosing between the cushion case and a more conventional round sports watch.
Is the California dial enough to justify the package?
My hot take: the dial is the reason to choose this Alpiner Extreme, not a detail that rescues an otherwise ordinary specification sheet. The mix of numerals gives the watch a recognizable face, while the steel cushion case and 200 m rating make it a credible sports-watch format on paper. Michael Stockton called the model “a solid addition to a nice-looking line of watches” in his October 23, 2023 Fratello article; the California dial is the more persuasive reason to pick this one over another member of that line.

The trade-off is that the case and rubber strap do not disappear into the background. If you like the distinctive dial but are uncertain about the shape, prioritize seeing the exact reference on your wrist. If you are comparing alternatives, use the dial design, case dimensions, strap configuration, water-resistance rating and local price as the practical decision points. Do not assume that the current brown US price applies to the original black 41 mm model or to another market.

Alpina’s US product page displayed $1,995 for the brown AL-525BRG3AE6 when accessed in 2026. This is a market-specific listed price and may change; it does not establish a transaction price elsewhere. The 2023 black model’s €1,595 / £1,495 figures were launch-era prices, not evidence of current discounts. Current stock, discounted selling prices and marketplace availability are not established here, so check the relevant local seller for the exact reference and price.

A Reddit user’s question, “Where can I find the California dial at not full price???”, captures the obvious buyer concern, but it is not evidence that a discount is available. Verify any offer against the exact reference, warranty terms and seller before treating it as comparable to Alpina’s listing.
