The widely cited $136 production-cost estimate is for the Apple Watch Series 6, not today’s newest Apple Watch. Counterpoint Research published it on June 1, 2021, as an approximate bill-of-materials (BoM) estimate—the cost of the device’s components, not a complete accounting of Apple’s costs or profit.
What the $136 Apple Watch estimate covers
Counterpoint Research’s Component Research Practice estimated that the Series 6’s bill of materials came to around $136. The figure is an estimate of the components in the device; it is not an audited disclosure of Apple’s full cost to manufacture and sell a watch. Counterpoint Research’s June 1, 2021 analysis called Series 6 Apple’s “latest smartwatch model” at the time. That description is historical, not current.
Counterpoint said the application processor, display, sensors, and casing together represented approximately 68% of the device’s total value. Its reported component-group shares were:

These percentages describe Counterpoint’s 2021 estimate for Series 6, not a parts breakdown for current Apple Watch models. The article also identifies Series 6 hardware such as its always-on Retina LTPO OLED display, S6 SiP, 1 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 32 GB of onboard memory, and 303.8 mAh battery; those specifications should not be carried over to later generations.

Why $136 is not Apple’s full cost—or its profit calculation
A BoM estimate does not, by itself, establish what Apple spends in total to bring a watch to market. The cited analysis does not provide enough underlying pricing detail to reconstruct supplier quotes, production-volume assumptions, or a complete cost of goods sold. It also does not quantify research and development, marketing, distribution, warranty, overhead, or retailer economics.
For the same reason, subtracting $136 from a retail price does not reveal Apple’s profit per watch. The two figures would not be a like-for-like cost-and-price comparison, and the cited sources do not establish a profit margin.

What the current Apple Watch lineup tells us—and what it doesn’t
Apple announced Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9, 2026, with preorders beginning that day and availability scheduled for September 18. Apple’s announcement listed a US starting price of $399. As of October 7, 2026, Apple’s US shop lists Series 12 from $399, Ultra 4 from $799, and SE 3 from $249. Prices and availability can vary by configuration, retailer, and date. Apple’s Series 12 announcement and its US Apple Watch shop provide current product and pricing context.

The Series 6 estimate and current prices are different kinds of figures from different years. The sources cited here provide no comparable BoM estimate for Series 12, Ultra 4, or SE 3, so the old $136 figure cannot be used to state what any of those watches costs Apple to make.
