Set a total budget that feels comfortable for your finances, then choose the best-fitting watch you can buy and maintain within it. Don’t stretch for a higher tier on the assumption that the watch will appreciate or repay the cost.
Start with a comfortable total budget, not a salary formula
No verified standard establishes how much a first-time buyer should spend, and the available evidence does not support setting the budget as a percentage of income. A retailer guide proposes $500 to $5,000 as a broad first-watch range, but that is its editorial framework—not a financial rule or a market-wide measure of what buyers spend. Precision Watches’ May 13, 2026 guide also advises against using emergency savings or taking on debt; treat that as the retailer’s general advice, not a personalized financial assessment.

Decide on a ceiling you can afford without disrupting other financial priorities. Include more than the sticker price: taxes, any bracelet adjustment, and the possibility of future maintenance can affect the real cost of ownership. Before buying, check the warranty, where service is available, and what service is likely to cost. The Minute Track recommends considering those factors alongside fit, movement, and intended use in its August 9, 2026 guide.

| Example | Official US listing snapshot | What the comparison does—and doesn’t—show |
|---|---|---|
| LONGINES Conquest 38 mm quartz, steel | $1,500 | A listed price for this specific quartz model; other Conquest and HydroConquest variants on the collection page have different prices. |
| TUDOR Black Bay 58, steel | $4,975–$5,350 | Listed prices for steel variants; the collection includes different materials, straps, and GMT versions at different prices. The steel models shown have a 39 mm case. |
Check the current price, precise reference, and availability before deciding: official listings can change, and these two examples differ in model and category. The LONGINES US Conquest collection and TUDOR Black Bay 58 collection provide the relevant listings. Neither example establishes what a typical first-time buyer spends.
Choose for how you will wear the watch
A higher price does not automatically mean a better first watch for you. Compare the watches within your budget against the things you will notice in everyday use:
Rank #2
- Featuring a Green Band, Silver-tone Case, Scratch Resistant Sapphire Crystal
- - Case Colour: Silver
- - Case Shape: Round
- - Case Material: Stainless steel, satinised
- Fit and comfort: Consider case dimensions and how the watch sits on your wrist. If possible, try it on and wear it for a while before choosing.
- Use and design: Decide whether you want a watch for daily wear, particular activities, or a specific look. Water resistance and other features matter most when they match your actual use.
- Movement and construction: Consider whether you prefer quartz or a mechanical movement, and whether details such as the crystal and bracelet construction matter enough to you to justify a higher price.
- Ownership support: Check warranty duration and terms, service locations, likely service costs, and whether bracelet adjustment is included or costs extra.
- Online purchase terms: Read the written return policy before ordering, especially if you cannot try the watch on first.
These are comparison points, not a scorecard in which the most expensive option wins. A watch that fits well, suits your routine, and has accessible support may be a better first purchase than one that consumes the full budget for features you do not need.
Consider pre-owned without treating it as a shortcut
Pre-owned listings may give you more choices within a fixed budget, including watches that originally sat at a higher price tier. The trade-off is that the specific seller and watch need careful checking. Precision Watches discusses authentication, condition, maintenance history, warranty, and documentation as key considerations; it also describes dealer inspection and a dealer-backed warranty as possible safeguards, not guarantees that apply to every seller or listing.
Rank #3

- Check the seller’s reputation and how the watch’s authenticity is established.
- Ask for a clear account of condition and maintenance history, plus available documentation.
- Read the exact warranty and return terms, including who provides the coverage and what it excludes.
- Factor any likely service needs into the amount you are willing to spend.
Do not budget around resale or appreciation
Resale value may reduce the eventual cost of ownership, but it is not a promised return. The Minute Track advises against financing a watch on the assumption that it will appreciate. Set your budget based on what you can comfortably spend and the watch’s value to you—not on an expected future sale price.
