A watch can have the right diameter for your wrist and still be the wrong watch for your shirts. If the case, crown, or bracelet catches on the cuff, or the watch will not pass comfortably beneath it, that watch may be less wearable with the shirts you own, and that is often what shifts a person toward a smaller or thinner size. The most reliable check is physical: put the watch on above the wrist bone and test it under the cuff you actually wear. Wrist measurements and published dimensions narrow the field, but no single case-size figure guarantees sleeve clearance.
Why the sleeve matters as much as the wrist
Wrist circumference tells you where a case diameter is likely to look proportionate. It does not tell you whether the watch will clear a cuff. Cuff openings, fabric weight, and button placement differ from shirt to shirt and between dress shirts and jacket sleeves, so the same watch can pass under one cuff and snag on another.
TAG Heuer’s official style guide makes the practical point directly. In its article “Off The Cuff | TAG Heuer Style Guide to Wearing a Watch,” published 17 December 2021 in the brand’s official magazine, the text states: “the watch should be slim enough that it slips easily underneath your shirt or jacket sleeve.” The publisher does not identify an individual speaker for that sentence, so it should be read as brand guidance rather than a quoted expert opinion.
Published sizing ranges
Longines’ official guide, “How to choose a watch for your wrist size,” offers general starting ranges that pair wrist circumference with case diameter and thickness. The search result does not display a publication date, so treat the figures as the brand’s current guidance as of the page you consult.

These are brand recommendations for general fit and appearance. Longines does not present them as cuff-clearance thresholds, and they are not tested limits. Use them to decide which watches are worth trying on, not to rule a watch in or out for sleeves.
Step 1: Measure your wrist and the watch
Victorinox’s guide, “How to Find the Perfect Watch,” recommends a soft measuring tape for the first measurement and lists the dimensions to compare.

- Wrap a soft measuring tape around the wrist where the watch normally sits, and record the circumference in centimetres.
- Match that figure to the Longines table above to find a sensible case-diameter range.
- Note the published case diameter, lug-to-lug length, strap width, and case thickness for each candidate watch. Thickness is the figure to check against a cuff, because the TAG Heuer guidance concerns a slim profile that slides under a sleeve.
- If a visual check helps, the Watch Station International “Official Watch Station Fit Guide” (a downloadable PDF, undated in the source listing) suggests printing the scale, cutting it out, and comparing it with the preferred size against your wrist.
Step 2: Test beneath your actual cuff
This is the decisive step. Measurements can only suggest whether a watch is likely to pass.
- Fasten the watch above the wrist bone, in the position you normally wear it.
- Put on the shirt you usually wear with that watch, with the cuff buttoned as you would wear it.
- Slide the cuff slowly over the hand and up the wrist. The cuff should pass over the case, crown, and any bracelet links without catching.
- Repeat with the jacket you wear most often with this watch, since jacket sleeves can be narrower or stiffer than shirt cuffs.
- Bend the wrist and move the arm through a normal range of motion. Check whether the case rides up into the cuff or the cuff hooks on the crown.
Common failure points are predictable:
- The crown or lug edge catches on the cuff opening, which usually points to case thickness or lug overhang.
- The watch passes one shirt but not another, which means the test has to be repeated with each garment you care about.
- The watch fits under a loose cuff but not a fitted one, which is a common reason a watch works for casual shirts and fails for dress shirts.
Comparing two watches
When two candidates both fall within the same wrist range, compare them on the published dimensions first: case diameter, lug-to-lug length, strap width, and thickness. Then wear each one under the same cuff, one after the other, and note which passes more easily. There is no source-supported thickness cutoff that works for every cuff, so the side-by-side test under your own sleeves is the only reliable tiebreaker.

What the sources do and do not establish
The available guidance is practical rather than measured. Brand guides describe cuff clearance and offer sizing ranges, but none of the sources reviewed for this article reports a study of how sleeves affect size preference. No percentage of people who prefer smaller or thinner watches because of sleeves is supported by these sources, and the article does not claim one.
Reader questions about this topic are common and often specific. One forum question about dress watches asks which large watches still slip under a sleeve without catching on the cuff, and another asks whether an Apple Watch would slide through a cuff. Those questions show what people want to know, not how often the problem occurs. The brand guides cited here cover mechanical watches; they do not give smartwatch dimensions, so for a smartwatch use the manufacturer’s published dimensions and apply the same under-the-cuff test.
