Alexei Leonov’s Strela chronograph is the Soviet watch associated with the first spacewalk, on 18 March 1965. It was not the first wristwatch in space: that distinction belongs to the Sturmanskie worn by Yuri Gagarin four years earlier. The difference matters because the two watches mark separate milestones—and the Strela’s 3017 chronograph movement is the focus of this story.
What watch was first in space?
Yuri Gagarin wore a Sturmanskie during his 12 April 1961 flight, the first human spaceflight. Sturmanskie’s official brand history says the watch was made for Gagarin under special order and that his flight lasted 108 minutes. The company’s account is a manufacturer history, rather than an independent mission record.
Gagarin’s Sturmanskie was not the Strela chronograph associated with Leonov’s later spacewalk. Keeping the watches distinct avoids a common mix-up: “first watch in space” refers to Gagarin’s milestone, while the cosmonaut chronograph story centers on Leonov and the Strela.
What was the Strela 3017 chronograph?
The Strela used the 3017 chronograph movement from the 1st Moscow Watch Factory. A specialist history of the Strela places the model’s introduction around 1959 and describes its central chronograph seconds hand and 45-minute elapsed-time counter. It also says early access was limited to Soviet Air Force personnel and some officials. These movement and model details come from a specialist watch history, not a contemporaneous factory archive.

A chronograph lets its wearer measure elapsed time separately from ordinary timekeeping. On the Strela, the central seconds hand and register made it possible to track a timed interval while the watch continued to show the time of day. That function suited an instrument developed in an aviation context and later associated with cosmonaut equipment.

The Museum of Time and Watches describes 3017 chronographs as part of cosmonaut equipment and documents their use in daily life, training, and spaceflight through archival imagery. Sturmanskie’s brand history also identifies Leonov’s spacewalk watch with the Strela.

That supports the historical association between Leonov, the spacewalk, and the Strela. It does not, by itself, establish the chain of custody for a particular serial-numbered watch or prove that an identified surviving example is the watch he wore. The specialist Strela history records Leonov’s time outside the spacecraft as 12 minutes and 9 seconds.
How did Soviet space chronographs develop after the Strela?
The chronograph story did not end with the 3017. The Museum of Time and Watches records that, from the mid-1970s, 3133 chronographs branded Okean, Shturmanskie, and Poljot joined equipment used alongside 3017s, Omega Speedmasters, and Elektronika watches.

The museum also records an Omega Flightmaster associated with Leonov’s Soyuz-Apollo flight in July 1975, as well as Omega Speedmaster examples associated with later missions. Soviet spaceflight equipment therefore included a changing mix of domestic and imported watches; it was not a single-model lineage from the Strela onward.

No. Sturmanskie describes its current Open Space collection as a modern interpretation of Leonov’s Strela. That makes the collection a tribute to the historical design story, not the flight-worn object itself. The manufacturer’s description does not establish the availability of any particular model or a direct chain of custody to a historical watch.
