Kamil, the watchmaker known as the Lapinist, specializes in restoring vintage Seiko and Grand Seiko cases. In a 2021 interview with Fratello, he described a painstaking process that can include disassembly, microscope inspection, laser welding, and carefully rebuilding polished and brushed surfaces. His account is a profile of his craft—not a current service quote or turnaround estimate.
What the Lapinist restores
Kamil says his main interest is the cases of vintage Seiko and Grand Seiko watches. The aim is not simply to make a worn case look shiny: he describes trying to recreate flat polished surfaces and crisp edges while accounting for the individual damage and history of each watch.
He taught himself case refinishing by studying case making, tool making, metal treatment, and machining. To pursue the precision he wanted, he made a lapping machine and custom tools. As he put it, “Ultimate precision was my only goal.” He also emphasized that even two watches of the same model can have different damage: “Each case is different and even if it comes from the same watch model it has completely different history and scars.” Read the Fratello interview.
How the case restoration works
The steps below are Kamil’s account in that interview, not a universal procedure for every watch. The work depends on the case’s condition and the surfaces that need to be restored.

- Remove the movement and dismantle the case. Case work starts with the watch taken apart so the case can be handled separately.
- Clean and inspect. Kamil describes ultrasonic cleaning followed by close inspection under a microscope.
- Rebuild the case shape where needed. He uses laser welding to restore the basic shape before refinishing the surfaces.
- Polish and brush the surfaces. The final work recreates the intended mix of finishes and the transitions between them. Kamil describes Zaratsu polishing as especially demanding, with the time required varying by the case’s facets and condition.
In the 2021 interview, Kamil estimated that a Zaratsu case could take 10–12 hours of work. That is his estimate from that interview, not an independently measured average, a current turnaround, or a promise for every case.
What the 2021 prices and queue do—and do not—tell you
Kamil gave these historical estimates in the March 2021 interview. They are useful for understanding what he said at the time, but they should not be used as present-day quotes or availability information.

Before arranging work, ask the provider about the exact reference, the proposed scope, current price and queue, shipping geography, insurance, and what documentation will be supplied after the work.
Independent case refinishing versus Grand Seiko’s official service
These are different service scopes, not interchangeable descriptions of the same work. Grand Seiko’s US support page describes its Complete Service as an interior overhaul combined with a light polish that burnishes the case and metal band to make them shiny. Kamil’s interview describes a specialist case-restoration process that can include laser welding and rebuilding surfaces. The official page does not describe that light polish as equivalent to his case shaping and refinishing.

Grand Seiko says its service network maintains parts inventories to support watches over long periods, including years after a model is discontinued. The brand also says there is no definitive limit to the repair period, while acknowledging it cannot guarantee that every original component will always remain available. Service pathways and eligibility can vary by region and model; consult Grand Seiko’s current US support page or the appropriate regional support channel for your watch.
How to choose a path for a worn vintage watch
There is no single right choice for every case. Compare the work being proposed with the condition and goals for your particular watch.

- Decide whether the case or movement needs attention. A case-only restoration is distinct from a movement overhaul; if both need work, ask whether they can be coordinated and who will handle each part.
- Be clear about the surface goal. Preserving original surfaces, lightly brightening a case, and rebuilding sharp facets with contrasting polished and brushed finishes are different objectives.
- Ask how the case will be treated. Request a case-specific explanation of inspection, any welding, and how the desired geometry and finishes will be approached.
- Confirm exact-reference capability and parts. Fratello reported in 2024 that the Lapinist launched sapphire crystals for selected vintage Grand Seiko and King Seiko references. That report does not establish compatibility with every watch or current stock; confirm the exact reference and availability before ordering.
- Check practical terms before shipping. Confirm current price, lead time, accepted shipping locations, insurance arrangements, and post-service documentation directly with the provider.
For another specialist option, The Seikologist describes repair, restoration, parts, and crystal services on its vendor site. Those are the provider’s own service descriptions; verify its current scope, geography, and terms directly.

The difficulty lies in returning shape and surface character without treating every damaged case as if it were identical. Kamil’s account combines inspection, possible material rebuilding, and careful finishing. Zaratsu polishing is one part of that work, but the interview makes clear that case condition and facet count affect the effort. His motivation was direct: “I love what I’m doing, just simply as that.”
