Screw-down crowns form part of the sealing-focused case design, while the patented annular dampener sits between the case and movement. MB&F describes FlexRing as providing additional shock protection, but publishes no impact-force rating or test standard, so the watch should not be described as shockproof.
What protection does the Legacy Machine 1 EVO actually claim?
MB&F gives the Legacy Machine 1 EVO (LM1 EVO) two distinct forms of protection. The first is a stated water-resistance rating of 80 metres / 8 ATM / 270 feet. The second is FlexRing, a patented annular dampener fitted between the outer case and the movement. MB&F says the ring provides “additional protection against shocks.” These are related to the demands of daily wear, but they are not the same kind of specification: the water figure is a published pressure-resistance rating, whereas FlexRing is described qualitatively.

The official LM1 EVO product page, current as accessed on 15 October 2026, does not publish a numerical shock-force limit, a maximum acceleration in G, an impact energy figure, or a named impact-test standard. That boundary matters. It is accurate to say that the EVO case adds a damping element intended to reduce the transmission of shocks to the movement; it is not accurate to promise that the watch is shockproof or certified for a particular impact.

Technical profile of the EVO case and movement
The protection systems are easier to understand when the complete package is viewed together. The LM1 EVO is a large, highly mechanical watch whose visible balance and twin time displays make movement stability a central engineering concern.

How the 80-metre water-resistance system works
Screw-down crowns are part of the sealing strategy
The technical specifications explicitly list screw-down crowns. Their inclusion signals that the crown openings are designed to be closed against the case rather than left in a simple push-in arrangement. For the LM1 EVO, this is a case-level sealing feature that works alongside the crystal and case construction to achieve the published rating.
The crown specification does not, by itself, describe a user procedure, a pressure-test schedule, or a guarantee that every watch will retain the same resistance indefinitely. Water resistance is a condition of the assembled and properly maintained watch. The product page supplies the 80-metre rating but no additional operating-limit instructions.
What the 80-metre figure means—and what it does not
“80 metres,” “8 ATM,” and “270 feet” are three ways MB&F presents the same stated rating. The number should be treated as the manufacturer’s specification for water resistance, not as a detailed activity authorization. The page does not equate the rating with swimming, diving, or any particular pressure-testing procedure. It also does not explain how resistance changes after a crown is opened, after a case intervention, or as seals age.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A reader can report the rating precisely, but should not infer a diving classification, a required service interval, or a post-impact water test from the number alone. For a definitive use decision, the relevant question is whether MB&F has supplied instructions for the specific watch and condition, not whether a generic conversion chart assigns an activity to 80 metres.
What FlexRing is and where it sits
An annular dampener between case and movement
FlexRing is a ring-shaped, or annular, damping element positioned between the outer case and the movement. Instead of mounting the calibre directly to the case as the only structural path, the EVO architecture inserts this patented component at the interface. MB&F’s stated purpose is to provide additional protection against shocks.
In mechanical terms, the ring gives the movement a controlled, compliant interface with the case. When the case receives a sudden jolt, that interface is intended to reduce how directly the disturbance reaches the calibre. The description supports the idea of isolation or damping; it does not establish a particular percentage reduction, a maximum impact, or a guarantee that the movement will remain unaffected in every accident.
Why “additional protection” is the right description
The word “additional” is important. FlexRing supplements the case’s structural design; it is not presented as an armour rating or as a replacement for careful handling. MB&F does not publish a shock-force number for the LM1 EVO, a laboratory result, or a recognized impact standard on the official page. Any article that assigns a G limit or calls the watch shockproof would be adding a claim the specification does not make.

What the movement is asking the case to protect
The LM1 EVO’s calibre is unusually exposed visually. Two completely independent time-zone displays show hours and minutes, and MB&F says one display can also measure elapsed time while the other keeps time. The manually wound movement contains 338 components and 25 jewels and stores 60 hours of power when fully wound.
Above the movement, the prominent balance measures 14 mm and uses a Straumann double hairspring. That visible regulating organ is a defining part of the Legacy Machine concept, but it is also a reminder that the movement has delicate, high-value components whose alignment and rate can be disturbed by severe shock. FlexRing is therefore best understood as a movement-isolation measure built into the EVO case, not as a separate rating for the balance itself.
How the physical EVO package contributes to resilience
Case materials and geometry
Buyers can choose a case in grade 5 titanium or 5N+ rose gold. Both versions use the same published EVO dimensions: 42 mm in diameter, 16.8 mm in height, 18 mm between the lugs, and 52 mm lug-to-lug. The case comprises 64 components. Those figures describe the physical package that houses the sealing and damping architecture; they do not constitute a shock certification.
Sapphire crystals on both sides
A high-domed sapphire crystal covers the front, while a box sapphire crystal forms the display back. Both crystals receive anti-reflective coating on both sides. Sapphire protects the viewing surfaces from ordinary scratching better than softer transparent materials, while the domed and box profiles accommodate the watch’s sculptural form. Crystal hardness should not be confused with impact immunity: a sapphire crystal can still be damaged by a sufficiently severe blow, and the published specifications do not assign it an impact limit.

Integrated strap and buckle
The supplied strap is an integrated quick-change rubber design, paired with a folding buckle in matching titanium or rose gold. The quick-change system concerns fitting and replacement, not a published shock or water rating for the strap. The integrated geometry is part of the EVO package and affects how the watch sits on the wrist, especially given its height and lug-to-lug measurement.
Can the LM1 EVO handle an active lifestyle?
The available evidence supports a careful, qualified answer. The EVO platform was re-engineered for “a different kind of life,” and MB&F specifically carries over the 80-metre water resistance and FlexRing from the EVO concept. That indicates an effort to make the Legacy Machine architecture more accommodating of everyday wear than a purely delicate dress-watch design.
It does not define every activity the watch can safely perform. The official specification does not provide swimming guidance, diving instructions, impact-test results, or a schedule for checking resistance. If an activity involves repeated impacts, high vibration, or deliberate immersion, the absence of a published operating instruction is itself material: do not convert the depth rating or the FlexRing description into permission that MB&F has not stated.

How to interpret common real-world situations
Rain and incidental splashes
The stated rating and screw-down crowns are relevant evidence that the case is designed to resist water ingress under its specified conditions. They still do not tell you how the watch should be handled after a crown has been manipulated or after the case has been opened for service. Treat the crown position and the watch’s maintenance condition as part of the water-resistance question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSwimming or deliberate immersion
The product page gives no operating-limit instruction that equates 80 metres with swimming or any other specific activity. A responsible description should therefore report the rating and stop there, unless MB&F supplies separate guidance for the individual watch.
A drop or hard impact
FlexRing is intended to add protection against shocks, but MB&F publishes no allowable impact level. After a significant impact, the relevant concern is not only whether the case looks intact; a shock can affect rate, winding, display behavior, or sealing. The official page does not provide a post-impact diagnostic or testing procedure, so any inspection should be handled through MB&F or an authorized specialist rather than inferred from the FlexRing name.
What the specifications do not establish
- No numeric shock-force rating is published for the LM1 EVO.
- No impact-test standard or laboratory protocol is identified.
- No attenuation percentage or maximum acceleration is stated for FlexRing.
- The 80-metre figure is not accompanied by a swimming, diving, or pressure-testing procedure.
- No post-impact inspection method or maintenance interval is specified on the cited product page.
These are evidence boundaries, not evidence that the watch lacks protection. They mark the difference between a documented feature and a claim that would require a separate test or instruction.
How to compare the LM1 EVO with another high-end sports or haute-horlogerie watch
A useful comparison should keep water resistance and shock protection as separate axes. Ask the following questions of each watch:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Water rating: What depth, ATM, or feet value does the manufacturer state, and is it tied to any activity guidance?
- Crown and sealing architecture: Are the crowns screw-down, and does the maker describe how the case openings are sealed?
- Movement isolation: Is the calibre mounted directly to the case, or does the design identify a ring, suspension, or other damping element?
- Shock evidence: Does the manufacturer publish a numerical limit or named test standard, rather than only qualitative language?
- Case and crystal: What are the materials, dimensions, crystal types, and coatings?
- Fit system: Is the strap integrated, interchangeable, or supplied with a specific buckle material?
On those axes, the LM1 EVO has a clearly stated 80-metre rating, screw-down crowns, a named FlexRing dampener, specified case materials and dimensions, and sapphire crystals with two-sided anti-reflective coating. Its shock specification remains qualitative.
Practical questions to ask before relying on the protection
If the watch will face conditions beyond ordinary desk, travel, or casual wear, ask MB&F or an authorized service provider for instructions that the product page does not include. In particular, request confirmation of the intended activity, how water resistance is verified after case work, and what inspection is recommended after a substantial impact. Keep those answers tied to the individual watch’s service history and current condition; the published rating describes the model, not the future condition of every example.
When setting the independent displays or using the elapsed-time function, remember that operating convenience does not change the case rating. The manually wound architecture and visible balance are functional and aesthetic features, while FlexRing is the component specifically identified for added shock protection. Keeping those roles separate avoids treating a movement feature as a durability certification.
