The Ressence Type 3 BB2 displays time without conventional hands or a crown: four rotating, inclined satellites indicate hours, minutes, day, date and oil temperature on a convex dial. A sealed chamber filled with 3.75 ml of oil sits above—and apart from—the mechanical movement. Ressence says the oil makes the display exceptionally clear; the watch’s unusual construction is also what makes it worth deciphering.
Why the Type 3 BB2 dial appears to float
The BB2’s display is built around Ressence’s patented ROCS 3.5 (Ressence Orbital Convex System). The module is driven by the minute axle of a customized 2824/2 base calibre. Its 215 parts, including main and sub-discs, move the dial indications across a convex Grade 5 titanium surface rather than relying on conventional central hands. The satellites are eccentric and biaxial, so their positions and orientations change as they travel.
The upper half of the case is a sealed chamber containing 3.75 ml of oil. The lower, separate sealed chamber houses the mechanical movement; the movement itself is not immersed in oil. Ressence says filling the upper chamber with oil ensures “crystal-clear readability of the dial and marvel for the eyes.” That is the brand’s explanation of the optical effect, not an independent readability test. The nearly pitch-black BB2 makes the rotating, flush discs especially noticeable against the dial.
How to read the BB2 display
Instead of tracking hands from a fixed central point, read the markings carried by the moving satellites. The display combines five indications: hours, minutes, day, date and oil temperature. Engraved indications are filled with Grade A Super-LumiNova, according to Ressence.

The satellites sit at different inclinations across the convex dial: 3°, 4.75° and 6.25°. Their orbital movement gives the display its shifting, dimensional appearance. How it is set and wound
The BB2 has no conventional crown. Ressence specifies winding and setting through the caseback. The movement uses magnetic transmission and a compensating bellows system, while the display module is driven from the movement’s minute axle. The brand’s TYPE 3 instructions explain the controls and sequence; consult them before operating the caseback rather than treating it like a standard crown-set watch.

These are specifications published by Ressence, not independent measurements. In particular, “splash resistance” should not be read as a dive rating.
What the BB2 costs and whether it is available
When Ressence’s product page was accessed on 2026-10-07, it listed the TYPE 3 BB2 at €50,600 including VAT, marked it sold out and directed buyers to retailers. That is a dated page observation, not a guarantee of current stock or a universal tax-inclusive price. Check the brand’s TYPE 3 BB2 product page for current availability. Ressence also reports that the model received the Red Dot “Best of the Best” award in 2024.

Monochrome Watches published its video, “Deciphering The Unconventional Ressence Type 3 BB2,” on 2025-10-31. Its listed chapters cover the watch’s background, design and dimensions, movement, oil-filled display, personal thoughts, specifications and price. The video description notes the separate oil-filled upper and movement chambers and the caseback controls.

The figures explain the BB2’s construction and display, but they do not establish how comfortable it feels on the wrist, how it performs against other watches in everyday use, how often it needs servicing or what long-term reliability to expect. Ressence specifies a 22/22 mm honeycomb strap; that measurement alone does not confirm that any third-party 22 mm strap will fit its attachment. Verify the width and attachment compatibility before buying a replacement.
