You do not download a complication separately: it is a feature supplied by the app, and it will appear only in watch-face slots that support its complication type.
What is a third-party complication?
A complication is a small information panel or shortcut displayed on an Apple Watch face. A third-party complication is provided by an app made by a developer other than Apple. Depending on the app, it might show weather, fitness data, calendar events, tides, sleep information, time zones, tasks, habits, or another specialized data point.

Most complications can be tapped to open their associated app, while some primarily display information at a glance. Apple says that only some App Store apps include complications, so installing an app does not automatically make it available on your watch face. See Apple’s guide to adding complications to the watch face.

Before you start
- Pair your Apple Watch with an iPhone, unless the particular app supports direct installation on the watch.
- Install the app from the App Store and confirm that it supports Apple Watch complications.
- Check whether the app has a watchOS component that must be installed or enabled.
- Use a watch face with at least one editable complication slot.
- Make sure the slot supports the complication layout provided by the app.
Check the app’s App Store description and developer documentation for references to Apple Watch, complications, watchOS, or specific supported faces. A normal iPhone widget does not automatically become an Apple Watch complication.
Method 1: Add the complication on your Apple Watch
- Display the watch face you want to customize.
- Touch and hold the display.
- Tap Edit.
- Swipe left all the way to the complication-editing screen.
- Tap the complication position you want to change.
- Turn the Digital Crown to browse the available complications.
- Stop on the third-party app’s complication.
- Press the Digital Crown to save.
- Tap the face to return to it.
The app’s data, icon, or shortcut should now appear in the selected position. Tapping it will generally open the associated app, although the exact behavior depends on the app and the complication.
If you cannot swipe to a complication-editing screen, the selected face may not support complications. Apple’s current instructions are documented in its Apple Watch user guide.
Method 2: Add it from the Watch app on iPhone
The iPhone route is often easier when you want to browse faces and their available positions together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap Face Gallery.
- Select the watch face you want to use.
- Under the face’s customization options, tap a complication position such as Top Left, Top Right, or Bottom.
- Swipe through the available complications.
- Select the third-party app’s complication.
- Tap Add to Watch.
Slot names vary by face. Depending on the design, you may see positions such as top left, top right, bottom, center, sub-dial, inline, or a large rectangular or modular area. Apple’s Face Gallery guide explains the current workflow; labels can differ slightly between watchOS releases.

How to find apps that support complications
- Search the App Store for the information you want, such as weather, tides, workouts, calendar, or habit tracking.
- Open each app’s listing and look for explicit Apple Watch, complication, or watchOS support.
- Check the developer’s documentation for supported faces, slot types, refresh behavior, and iPhone requirements.
- Install the app and open it on your iPhone and Apple Watch if the developer requires that step.
- Return to face customization and check the complication list.
Availability, pricing, and watchOS requirements can vary by country and can change with app updates. An App Store listing marked “Free” may still place advanced complications, data sources, or scheduling behind in-app purchases or a subscription.
Choosing a third-party complication app
Judge an app by more than whether its name appears in the complication list:
- Information density: Does it provide useful data at a glance, or mainly act as an app launcher?
- Refresh behavior: How often does the information update, and is that behavior documented?
- Face and slot support: Does it work with your preferred circular, rectangular, inline, modular, or other slot?
- iPhone independence: Can the relevant feature work when the iPhone is not nearby?
- Permissions: Does it request location, Health, calendar, or notification access?
- Cost: Are the desired features free, paid once, or subscription-based?
- Maintenance: Does the developer appear to support current watchOS releases?
For example, Watchsmith is positioned around customizable and scheduled complications, including date, weather, astronomy, workout, and calendar information. Its US App Store listing showed a free download with in-app purchases; premium data and features may require payment, and regional availability can differ.
WatchMaker focuses more broadly on watch-face designs and customization while also advertising complication-style features such as weather, battery, Wi-Fi, and countdown information. Treat it differently from a simple native complication: its listing combines faces, wallpapers, and app-dependent features, so verify how each element behaves on Apple’s own watch-face system.
Why the complication does not appear
The app does not provide a complication
An app may support notifications or have a watchOS app without supplying anything for the watch face. Apple specifically says that only some App Store apps include complications. Confirm the feature in the listing or the developer’s documentation.

The face or slot is incompatible
Watch faces expose different slot shapes, known in Apple’s developer documentation as complication families. An app may support a rectangular slot but not a circular or inline one. Try another position or a different face. Apple explains these layout limitations in its Complications Human Interface Guidelines.
The watch component is not installed
Some apps require a separate Apple Watch component. Installation behavior varies between apps and watchOS versions, so check the app’s instructions and confirm that the app is present on the watch where applicable.
The app or watchOS version is unsupported
An older app may not support your current watchOS release, while a newer app may require a newer version. Use the developer’s stated requirements rather than assuming a universal minimum version.
The app needs initial setup
Open the app on the iPhone and Apple Watch once, complete any setup, and grant only the permissions required for the information you want displayed. Some data sources, such as Health or location information, will not appear until access is configured.
The complication is hidden in the list
When editing a slot on the watch, rotate the Digital Crown through the complete list. Apple presents available complications according to the selected position rather than through a separate “install complication” screen.

The face has no editable slots
Some watch faces have no complications, while others offer fewer positions than expected. Choose a face that visibly provides editable complication slots.
Recovery checklist
If the complication is still missing, work through these steps in order:
- Confirm that the App Store listing explicitly mentions Apple Watch complications.
- Confirm that the app’s watch component is installed, if the developer provides one.
- Open the app on both the iPhone and Apple Watch once.
- Try a different Apple watch face with a common, simpler slot type.
- Try adding the complication from Apple Watch > Face Gallery on the iPhone instead of editing the watch directly.
- Check the developer’s requirements for the app version, watchOS version, permissions, and iPhone connection.
- Remove and reinstall the app only if the developer’s support guidance recommends it.
- Contact the app developer if the complication is absent from every face and slot the app claims to support.
Updating, restarting, or reinstalling can be reasonable troubleshooting options, but none is guaranteed to restore a complication that the app does not provide or that your chosen slot cannot support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Complications versus third-party watch faces
A complication occupies a slot on an Apple watch face and follows the face’s supported layout rules. A third-party watch-face app may instead provide designs, wallpapers, app views, or app-dependent overlays. Those features should not automatically be treated as native Apple Watch complications.
If you want information that does not fit on the face, consider the Smart Stack, notifications, the app’s watchOS interface, or a Shortcut where supported. These are alternatives, not replacements for a complication placed directly on the watch face. Apple’s developer guidance discusses newer complication layouts and their relationship to the Smart Stack in its complication guidelines.

Sharing a face with a third-party complication
A shared Apple Watch face can include a complication from an app the recipient does not have. Apple may prompt the recipient to download the missing app or continue without that complication. Shared watch faces require watchOS 7 or later for the recipient. See Apple’s guide to sharing Apple Watch faces.
This is useful for distributing a preconfigured face, but it is not required for ordinary setup: installing the app and customizing your own face is enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a third-party complication to any Apple Watch face?
No. The face must offer editable complication slots, and the selected slot must support the complication family provided by the app.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does an app appear on my Apple Watch but not in the complication list?
The app may support only notifications or a watchOS app, not a face complication. It may also require a different face or slot, a separate watch component, initial setup, or a supported watchOS version.
Can I add multiple complications from the same app?
Yes, if the app supplies compatible complications for the positions you choose. The available choices depend on the face and each slot’s supported layout.
Do third-party complications work without my iPhone nearby?
Not universally. Independence varies by app, feature, connectivity, and developer support, so check the app’s documentation.
Are third-party complications free?
Not always. Some are free, while premium data, advanced customization, or scheduling may require in-app purchases or a subscription. Prices and availability vary by region.
