Watch: This AI Pin Wants to Take Notes for You

Plaud’s NotePin S records conversations with a physical button, then turns them into transcripts, summaries and action items. Here is what changed since the 2024 TechCrunch video—and whether the $179 wearable is worth it.

Plaud’s AI pin is a wearable audio recorder, not a futuristic phone replacement. The device captures meetings, interviews, lectures, dictation and other conversations, then sends the recording to Plaud’s software for transcription, summaries, insights and action items. The product featured by TechCrunch on August 30, 2024 was the original NotePin; the current model is the Plaud NotePin S.

Its appeal is simple: press a physical button, keep your phone out of the conversation, and review machine-generated notes later. Whether that is worth $179 plus possible subscription fees depends on how often you record in person—and whether you can record lawfully and with appropriate consent.

What the original TechCrunch video showed

The TechCrunch Minute segment published August 30, 2024 focused on Plaud’s strategy of narrowing the broad “AI pin” idea to one job: note-taking. It described the original NotePin as a small wearable that could record meetings and dictation, with audio transcribed using OpenAI’s GPT-4o. The device could be worn as a necklace or wristband.

That report should not be read as a current independent review of the NotePin S. The GPT-4o reference belongs to the 2024 coverage, and it does not establish perfect transcription, dependable speaker identification or accurate summaries in every environment. Plaud’s current product pages advertise access to multiple models, including GPT-5.5, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro; those are current vendor claims, not independent performance results.

How NotePin S works

The practical workflow is:

  1. Press: Wear the device and use its tactile physical button to start recording.
  2. Record: Capture a conversation, lecture, interview, meeting or personal memo.
  3. Sync: Transfer the recording to the Plaud app, Plaud Web or Plaud Desktop.
  4. Transcribe: Generate a searchable text transcript.
  5. Summarize: Apply a template or ask Plaud to extract key points, decisions, action items, follow-up questions or quotes.
  6. Review: Check important claims against the transcript and original audio.

That makes NotePin S hands-free after you choose to start recording, but it is not an invisible or fully autonomous assistant. You still need to activate and stop recordings, manage the files and review the AI output. Processing and summarization depend on Plaud’s companion software and account.

Plaud also advertises speaker detection or labeling, custom and professional templates, multimodal input such as text, images and highlights, Ask Plaud for querying recorded material, AutoFlow automation, Google Calendar integration and desktop support for online meetings. Its product page lists 112 transcription languages and more than 10,000 official templates, although availability can vary by plan, language, software version and region.

The subscription is part of the price

The hardware is usable without immediately paying for a premium plan, but the free allowance is limited to 300 transcription minutes per month. Plaud’s U.S. plan page displayed the following prices and allowances on August 18, 2026:

Plan Displayed price Transcription
Starter Free 300 minutes per month
Pro $99.99 per year, shown as $8.33 per month annually; $17.99 monthly 1,200 minutes per month
Unlimited $239.99 per year, shown as $19.99 per month annually; $29.99 monthly Unlimited, capped at 24 hours per user per day
Team $20 per user per month annually or $25 at the displayed comparison price Unlimited, capped at 24 hours per user per day

Prices, taxes, promotions and features can change by geography and account state, so check Plaud’s current plan page before buying. Based on the listed U.S. prices, the approximate first-year totals are:

  • Hardware only: $179.
  • Hardware plus annual Pro: about $279 before tax or promotions.
  • Hardware plus annual Unlimited: about $419 before tax or promotions.

The key calculation is usage. A person recording a few short conversations each month may fit within the free allowance. Someone regularly recording interviews, site visits or lectures may need Pro. Heavy users should compare the Unlimited cost with software-only services before committing.

Is it better than using a phone?

Usually, no—at least not universally. A phone is cheaper if you already own one, and it offers video, photographs, immediate editing, camera context, familiar note apps, calendars and a much wider range of integrations. It is also easier to use for occasional recording.

NotePin S makes a stronger case when the friction of using a phone is the problem. A dedicated button can be quicker than unlocking a phone, finding an app and placing the device on a table. Wearing it may help during walking interviews, inspections, fieldwork or spontaneous ideas, and keeping a phone out of sight can reduce distraction.

The real question is not whether the pin has AI. Phones, laptops, smartwatches and meeting platforms already offer transcription and summaries. The question is whether dedicated, wearable, one-button capture saves enough effort to justify another battery, charging dock, account, app and possible subscription.

Where it can be useful

  • Journalists: Capture an interview while maintaining eye contact, then verify quotations against the audio.
  • Consultants and sales professionals: Create draft meeting notes and action lists without typing throughout the discussion.
  • Students: Record a permitted lecture and search the resulting transcript later.
  • Inspectors and field researchers: Dictate observations while walking or working with both hands occupied.
  • People with accessibility needs: Reduce reliance on handwriting or typing where recording is permitted.
  • Executives and creatives: Capture walk-and-talk ideas and personal memos quickly.

Medical, legal, educational, workplace and research use requires extra care. Consent, institutional policy, contracts, approved data handling and retention rules may matter more than the hardware.

Accuracy: useful draft, not authoritative record

AI notes are an interpretation of audio. They are not a verbatim replacement for the recording, even when the transcript looks polished. Potential problems include:

Keep the original audio. For legal, medical, financial, employment, research or contractual matters, verify quotations, numbers, decisions and commitments against the recording before relying on them.

Privacy, consent and safety

Recording another person is the most important issue here. Consent rules vary by jurisdiction; some U.S. states generally require all parties’ consent, while others may permit one-party recording subject to exceptions and other laws. International conversations add further complexity. A workplace, school, hospital or client agreement may be stricter than local law.

Do not assume that a small wearable is automatically discreet or acceptable. It may be less intrusive than placing a phone in the middle of a table, but it can also create suspicion if people do not know what it is. Disclose the recording and obtain consent where required or appropriate, and follow organizational policy. For sensitive professional use, consult qualified legal or compliance advice rather than relying on a general product article.

Plaud lists or advertises security and compliance claims including ISO 27001/27701, GDPR, SOC 2, HIPAA and EN 18031. Those claims should not be simplified into a guarantee that every use is private or automatically HIPAA-compliant. The relevant service, configuration, contract, data flow and user behavior all matter.

There are also practical questions to check before purchase: whether recording works when the phone is not nearby, when cloud processing occurs, how long processing takes, whether audio can be exported independently, and how deletion and retention work. The product pages confirm synchronization across Plaud’s app, web and desktop software, but do not by themselves establish every offline, export or deletion behavior.

Plaud warns people with pacemakers to avoid wearing NotePin S on the chest because of its magnetism. Follow that warning and consult a medical professional if it applies to you.

How it compares with alternatives

Option Best suited to Main trade-off
Phone plus transcription app Occasional recording and users who want no extra hardware Less convenient to activate and potentially more distracting
Laptop or meeting-platform transcription Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and other online meetings Less useful for informal, walking or field conversations
Smartwatch or phone-native recorder Users already invested in Apple, Google or Samsung ecosystems May lack NotePin’s dedicated placement, button or templates
Non-wearable AI recorder Users who prefer a visible table device and larger controls Less convenient for hands-free movement

Software-first alternatives include Otter.ai, Fireflies.ai and Notta. For online meetings, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams may fit better if your organization already uses them. Their current prices and limits are not included here; compare their official terms with your actual recording volume.

Who should buy NotePin S?

Consider it if you frequently conduct in-person meetings, interviews, inspections, lectures or field visits; want a physical recording control; benefit from hands-free capture; and are willing to review AI-generated notes and pay for additional transcription when necessary.

Skip it if you record only occasionally, already have adequate phone or meeting transcription, do not want a recurring AI subscription, need guaranteed verbatim accuracy, work where recording is prohibited, expect a general-purpose AI assistant, or are uncomfortable sending sensitive conversations through a cloud-based service.

Verdict

NotePin S is a more coherent product than the broad “AI pin” concept because it concentrates on one task: recording audio and turning it into organized notes. Its physical button and wearable design can genuinely reduce friction for frequent in-person recording.

But it is best understood as a specialized recorder with AI processing—not a second brain, smartphone replacement or guarantee of accurate minutes. The $179 hardware price is only part of the decision, and consent, data governance and human review are essential. Buy it when hands-free capture is a recurring problem. Otherwise, your phone, smartwatch or existing meeting software is probably the better value.
