Start with the exact Cartier Roadster reference, not the collection name. Roadsters vary by size, movement, material and configuration; a reference-specific inspection, written return terms and an independent watchmaker’s assessment matter more than a box or papers when you buy pre-owned.
Identify the exact Roadster before comparing listings
Ask for the full reference number and clear photographs of the reference and serial markings. Match the reference to the watch being offered, then compare the case, material, dial, movement, functions and bracelet or strap configuration. Do not assume that a photograph of a strap, extra links or accessories means they are included.

Cartier’s current product pages illustrate why the reference matters: its medium WGRD0011 is listed with a 42.5 × 34.92 mm case and automatic caliber 1899 MC, while its large WSRD0014 is listed at 47.2 × 38.7 mm with automatic caliber 1847 MC, a 40-hour power reserve and bracelet/interchangeable-strap configurations. Choose a size by fit, not just the stated dimensions
Compare the exact listing’s dimensions and thickness, but try the watch on if possible. A tonneau-shaped case can wear differently from a round watch with the same nominal width, so dimensions alone cannot settle fit. Ask the seller for the bracelet’s maximum wrist circumference and the number of links included. Check that the clasp closes securely and that the bracelet or strap configuration is the one described.

Inspect condition and likely near-term costs
Request high-resolution photographs in angled light, including the dial, hands, crystal, crown, case edges, case back, bracelet, clasp and markings. Ask for dated service invoices and details of the work and parts used. A watch that runs is not necessarily in good service condition; request a watchmaker’s assessment and a written estimate for any work that may be due.

- Case and finish: Look for dents, deep scratches, corrosion and softened edges that may indicate heavy polishing. Compare polished and brushed surfaces from several angles.
- Crystal, dial and hands: Check for chips, scratches, dust or moisture under the crystal, uneven printing, damaged hands and date-wheel alignment. The date magnifier and shaped case are design features, not proof of authenticity.
- Crown and pushers: Confirm that winding, setting and date changes work. If the reference has chronograph functions, ask a qualified seller or watchmaker to check the pushers and operation.
- Bracelet and clasp: Look for looseness, worn pins, a weak clasp and missing links. Establish exactly what is included and factor any missing components into the offer.
- Movement and service: Request service dates, invoices, the provider’s name and a description of work. Ask for a timekeeping check and a written estimate if service history is absent or incomplete.
Treat water resistance as unverified until tested
Cartier lists 10 bar water resistance for the WSRD0014, but that model specification says nothing about the current seals of an individual pre-owned watch. Age, prior case opening and wear can affect sealing. Consider water resistance unverified unless the exact watch has recently passed a pressure test; Cartier’s warranty information discusses testing after a case is opened.

Assess authenticity without relying on papers alone
Cartier says it cannot provide information or authentication for items acquired outside Cartier boutiques or authorized retailers. Its FAQ states, “we are unable to provide information or authentication for items acquired outside of Cartier boutiques or authorized retailers.” Cartier also says that an original serial number removed or not clearly legible can affect warranty eligibility. Do not assume Cartier will authenticate a privately sourced Roadster from its serial number.

Documents can help establish a watch’s history, but they do not settle authenticity. Cartier’s warranty page says: “Please note that the present Cartier International Repair Warranty, the intervention invoice and/or repair documents shall not be construed as a certificate of authenticity.” Compare paperwork with the watch’s reference and serial details, and have an independent watchmaker experienced with Cartier inspect the individual watch. Prefer a seller with an established business, a written description that identifies the reference, a documented inspection process, secure payment and a meaningful written return period. Arrange an independent inspection before that return window closes. Get the return terms in writing, including how to proceed if an inspection raises concerns.

Confirm in writing what the sale includes: watch head, bracelet and link count, straps and buckles, box, papers, receipts and service records. Walk away if the seller refuses clear reference and serial photographs or will not allow a reasonable independent inspection.

Compare the total offer, not just the asking price
Compare watches only after matching the reference and configuration. Then weigh condition, service history, bracelet completeness, included straps, seller inspection, return rights and any warranty. Add likely service or missing-link costs to the asking price, and request reference-specific written estimates where needed. Available listings change, and no market-wide average price or current service-cost figure is established here; a single asking price is not a reliable valuation benchmark.
