To time an everyday task with a chronograph, start the stopwatch with its designated pusher, stop it when the task ends, read the elapsed-time hand and registers, then reset the chronograph to zero. The exact pusher, display layout and timing capacity depend on the watch’s movement, so check the manual for your specific watch before using its controls.
Identify the chronograph controls and hands
A chronograph adds elapsed-time measurement to a watch that continues to show the time. On some watches, the large central seconds hand is the stopwatch hand; ordinary running seconds may instead appear in a small subdial. Other subdials can record elapsed minutes or hours. Their roles and the watch’s maximum timing interval vary, so use the exact watch or movement manual to identify each hand and register.

Many chronographs use one pusher to start and stop timing and another to reset the stopped hands to zero. Do not assume the buttons behave identically across watches. For instance, Citizen’s H80 instructions say that pulling out the crown stops and resets that chronograph; this is a model-specific behavior, not a general chronograph rule. Time a task step by step
- Check the manual. Find the instructions for your exact watch or caliber. Identify the start/stop control, reset control and hands or registers that show elapsed time.
- Check the zero position. If the manual calls for it, make sure the chronograph hands are at zero before starting. Seiko’s instructions for the 8R46 and 8R48 specifically call for checking that the center stopwatch seconds hand is at zero. They also specify sufficient winding for those movements, including a limitation when power reserve is less than 10 hours; follow the manual’s conditions rather than applying them to other calibers. Seiko 8R46/8R48 instructions
- Start at the beginning. Press the start control when the task or interval begins.
- Stop at the end. Press the start/stop control again when the interval ends. Read the chronograph’s elapsed-time display, not the watch’s ordinary time display.
- Read the registers, then reset. Use the seconds hand and any elapsed-minute or elapsed-hour registers to read the result. Once timing is stopped, press the designated reset control to return the chronograph hands to zero, as directed by the movement instructions.
Read the elapsed time and know the limit
Chronograph layouts differ: a central hand may count seconds while subdials record minutes or hours, but the arrangement is not universal. Hamilton’s guide describes common seconds, minutes and hours registers. Capacity is movement-specific: Seiko describes a maximum measurement capacity of 30 minutes for caliber 8R46 and 12 hours for caliber 8R48. Those figures apply to the named movements, not to chronographs as a category. Hamilton chronograph guide; Seiko 8R46/8R48 instructions

Time a task with interruptions
Some movements support accumulated elapsed-time measurement: stop the chronograph during an interruption, restart it when timing resumes, and the displayed elapsed measurement adds the timed periods. Grand Seiko documents this operation for caliber 9SC5; do not assume every chronograph accumulates time in the same way. After the final interval, stop and reset as the manual instructs. A tachymeter scale, if your watch has one, can estimate average speed over a known distance. Start timing at the beginning of that distance and stop at its end, then read the scale according to the watch’s instructions. Grand Seiko illustrates the method over one kilometer and also describes timing one produced unit to estimate a production rate. The result depends on the scale and the method’s assumptions; a tachymeter is not a general-purpose precision instrument. Grand Seiko 9SC5 instructions
