To buy a watch at auction, register for the specific sale, check the watch and sale terms, choose a bidding method, and set a ceiling that accounts for the buyer’s premium, taxes, and delivery costs—not just the hammer price. If you win, follow the invoice’s payment deadline and arrange collection or shipping. Rules vary by auction and location, so the lot page and Conditions of Sale for that sale control.
Before you bid: check the watch and the sale
Start with the exact watch lot and its auction page. Confirm the sale format and time zone, registration deadline, bidding channels, estimate, bidding increments, fees, taxes, and delivery or collection options. Read the Conditions of Sale, and use the lot-page cost calculator if one is provided; Christie’s says its calculator can estimate buyer’s premium and shipping (Christie’s bidding guide).

Do not treat the ability to register or bid as a guarantee about the watch. Review the lot description and condition report for condition, authenticity, provenance, service history, and included accessories. Check the sale terms for any warranty or return rights, and ask the auction house’s watch specialists about questions the published information does not resolve. The general buyer guides cited here do not establish one universal authenticity or condition guarantee.

An account alone may not be enough: houses can require separate registration and approval for each sale. Start early, complete identity checks, and wait for approval before relying on a bidding channel. Deadlines and extra requirements are sale-specific.

These are each house’s guidance, not a universal 24-hour rule. Follow the deadline and instructions on the page for your sale.
Choose how to bid
Not every auction offers every channel. Check which methods the sale supports and whether your registration is approved for the one you plan to use.
| Method | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| In person | Register for a paddle and bid in the room when the lot is called. | Christie’s asks in-person bidders to bring photo ID and proof of address to collect a paddle. You can follow the room directly, but must be present when the lot comes up. (Christie’s bidding guide) |
| Telephone | Register in advance; a house representative calls as the lot approaches and relays your bids. | Christie’s recommends leaving an emergency absentee bid in case the representative cannot reach you. Availability and procedures depend on the sale. (Christie’s bidding guide; Sotheby’s bidding guidance) |
| Live online | Register for the auction, then join the online saleroom during the live session to follow and place bids. | Confirm the platform and connection requirements on the sale page; this option requires you to monitor the live session. (Christie’s bidding guide; Phillips buyer guidance) |
| Absentee or maximum bid | Submit a bid ceiling in advance. The auctioneer or platform bids for you up to that amount, subject to the sale’s rules. | You do not need to respond to each increment live, but should understand how the house executes the bid and whether bids can be changed or withdrawn. (Christie’s bidding guide; Sotheby’s bidding guidance) |
On Christie’s online-only platform, a quick bid places the next increment; a maximum bid authorizes further bidding on your behalf until the maximum is exceeded. Christie’s says that when identical maximum bids are left, the first received takes precedence (Christie’s bidding guide). Do not assume other houses use the same rules.

Set a ceiling using the total cost
Your winning bid, or hammer price, is not necessarily the amount you will pay. The invoice may add a buyer’s premium, taxes, and shipping or other charges; a resale royalty can apply in some places. Christie’s describes these invoice components, and Phillips says bids do not include the buyer’s premium and applicable sales tax (Christie’s payment and shipping guidance; Phillips buyer guidance).
For a concrete, sale-specific example, Phillips Watches Online: The New York Sessions Fall 2026 listed this buyer’s premium structure: 27% on the hammer price up to and including $1,000,000; 21% on the portion above $1,000,000 and up to and including $6,000,000; and 14.5% on the portion above $6,000,000. These were the terms on that New York sale page, not a general Phillips rate or a rate for other auctions (Phillips Watches Online: The New York Sessions Fall 2026).
Use the specific sale’s cost calculator where available, then check what it includes. Christie’s describes its calculator as estimating buyer’s premium and shipping; the final terms and invoice govern taxes and any other charges. Set a maximum bid you can afford after accounting for costs that may sit on top of it.

Understand whether a bid can be cancelled
Before submitting a bid, check the sale’s rules for when it becomes binding and whether it can be withdrawn. Christie’s says an online bid cannot be cancelled after submission. Phillips’ cited Fall 2026 New York watch sale says bids cannot be cancelled once the sale goes live. These examples do not establish a single rule for every auction, so read the applicable Conditions of Sale before committing (Christie’s bidding guide; Phillips Watches Online: The New York Sessions Fall 2026).

Use the invoice and sale terms for the actual payment deadline, accepted methods, and delivery arrangements. As one house-specific example, Christie’s says its Post-Sale Lead sends the invoice and that it is also available in the buyer’s account within 48 hours of auction close. Christie’s guidance says payment for live auctions is due within seven days; this is not a general deadline for other sales. Christie’s may reject payment from a third party rather than the winning bidder, and online checkout methods and transaction limits vary by region (Christie’s payment and shipping guidance).
Choose an available shipping or collection option and confirm its cost and timing before paying. Christie’s says items using its online-checkout shipping quote are usually delivered within 7–14 business days after payment clears. That estimate applies to the stated Christie’s service, not all auction houses or watch shipments (Christie’s payment and shipping guidance).
