To time a lap with a chronograph, identify the stopwatch hand and elapsed-time registers in your watch’s manual, start the timer at the lap’s beginning, stop it at the end, and read the elapsed time before resetting. A chronograph also displays the time of day, but its hands and subdials are arranged differently across movements; not every chronograph has a lap or split function.
What a chronograph measures
A chronograph combines an ordinary time display with a stopwatch function for measuring elapsed time. The watch can continue to show the current time while the chronograph measures an interval. Seiko describes this operation in its 8R46/8R48 instructions.

How to identify the hands and subdials
Do not identify a register by its position alone. Depending on the watch, the long central seconds hand may be the stopwatch hand, while a small register shows the watch’s continuously running seconds. Other registers may count elapsed minutes or hours. Timex describes this as a common arrangement, but dial layouts vary: check the labels and the manual for your exact model or movement.

For example, Seiko’s 8R46 has a central stopwatch seconds hand and a stopwatch minute register; its 8R48 also has a stopwatch hour hand. Those assignments apply to those movements, not to chronographs in general.

How to time one lap
- Find the manual. Check the watch’s reference or caliber and open the matching instructions. If the pushers have screw locks, use the manual’s procedure to unlock them.
- Check the watch before starting. Confirm that the chronograph hand is at zero and that the watch is ready to operate as specified for its movement. Seiko’s mechanical instructions, for example, include winding and power-reserve checks.
- Start at the lap’s beginning. Press the documented start control once as you cross the start line.
- Stop at the lap’s end. Press the documented start/stop control again at the finish. Read the central chronograph seconds hand and any elapsed-minute or elapsed-hour registers. If a register cycles more than once, use the manual to determine how to account for additional elapsed time.
- Record the result before resetting. Reset behavior differs by model. On Citizen’s U822, reset erases recorded split-time and lap-time measurements, so note the result first.
Elapsed time versus lap and split timing
A standard start-and-stop chronograph measures the total time between those two actions. It does not necessarily store successive laps while the overall timer keeps running. That requires a documented lap or split function, which appears only on selected models. Frederique Constant explains the distinction for selected watches in its lap and split guide. Do not assume that a watch with two pushers can record laps; consult its manual before using any special timing or reset control.
What a tachymeter tells you
A tachymeter is a separate scale used with elapsed time to estimate average speed or another rate. In Grand Seiko’s example, start the chronograph as a vehicle passes a starting point, stop it at a one-kilometer marker, and read the tachymeter value indicated by the stopwatch seconds hand. The scale helps calculate a rate; it is not needed to read the elapsed duration of a lap.

Check the watch’s measurement limit
Chronograph capacity depends on the movement. Seiko specifies a maximum of 30 minutes for the 8R46 and up to 12 hours for the 8R48. Grand Seiko’s instructions describe up to 12 hours for calibers 9R96, 9R86, and 9R84. These are specifications for the named movements, not universal limits. See the Seiko 8R46/8R48 manual and Grand Seiko instructions for details.

If you are comparing watches for this purpose, look beyond the number of subdials. Confirm that the manual documents a lap or split feature if you need to capture multiple laps without stopping the overall session. Check whether the elapsed-time registers are readable for the durations you expect, how the controls work, and whether resetting or recording has consequences for stored results. Those details are movement- and model-specific.
