How, how often, and when should I wind my watch?
NOMOS recommends winding a mechanical watch regularly, and its FAQ suggests making it a morning routine. Wind before putting the watch on your wrist: winding while it is worn can strain the winding mechanism to one side.

- Take the watch off your wrist.

- Stop when you feel noticeable resistance. Do not force the crown or continue turning after that point.
Power reserve depends on the model. NOMOS’s hand-wound manual, with status October 2025, specifies up to 43 hours for the watches it covers; date models have about one hour less because changing the date uses energy. The manual separately says Lambda and Lux models need winding once every 84 hours. These are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not a single reserve figure for every hand-wound NOMOS.

Check the water-resistance marking on your watch’s caseback and consult the instructions for the exact reference. NOMOS’s hand-wound manual describes the following general scale:

Have the seals checked
NOMOS recommends checking a mechanical watch’s water resistance once a year. Heat, sudden temperature changes, sweat, sunscreen, and chemicals can strain seals; a watch that once passed a water-resistance test may not retain that protection indefinitely. A specialist retailer or the manufactory can test resistance with an airtight device and negative pressure without immersing the watch. Arrange a check if you are unsure of its condition, particularly before exposing it to water.

How should I protect the movement from magnetism and impact?
Keep it away from strong magnetic fields
NOMOS warns that magnetic fields can affect mechanical watches. Avoid storing the watch close to digital devices, loudspeakers, or induction hobs. A sudden or persistent change in timekeeping—including gaining or losing time, stopping, or holding a fixed deviation—can have several causes, but magnetization is one possibility. Ask a retailer or watchmaker to assess it; NOMOS says a retailer can demagnetize the watch if needed.
Avoid drops and strain
Protect the watch from drops and hard impacts, which can damage a mechanical movement. Wind it off your wrist, as described above, to avoid putting sideways strain on the winding mechanism.

Store it safely
When you are not wearing the watch, store it somewhere secure and away from direct sunlight. Also keep the storage spot away from strong magnetic fields.
How often should my watch go in for service?
NOMOS recommends regular professional servicing. Its hand-wound manual recommends service every five years, while its FAQ says a complete revision should be carried out at the latest after three to five years. NOMOS notes that lubrication can evaporate over time, allowing metal parts to wear against one another. Follow the guidance for your specific watch and arrange service through NOMOS, an authorized retailer, or a specialist watchmaker.

When should I ask a professional to check the watch?
- You notice a sudden or persistent change in timekeeping, or the watch stops.
- The watch has been exposed to water beyond the activity allowed by its marking, or you are uncertain about its water resistance.
