Start with the manual for your exact Longines watch: find it on Longines’ care instructions page by watch name, reference, or calibre. Water-resistance ratings and care instructions can vary by model. For the L896 manual reviewed here, Longines recommends an annual water-resistance check at an approved service centre; that is not a general movement-service interval.
Find the instructions for your specific watch
Use the reference printed on your watch or its documentation to locate the corresponding manual through Longines’ manual finder. A manual for another Longines model may cover a different movement, complication, or operating procedure, so do not assume its instructions apply to yours.

Longines’ US FAQ raises questions about maintenance, care, water resistance, and repairs, but the available page content does not provide answers to all of them. For issues not addressed in your model’s manual, contact Longines or an official dealer rather than treating general watch-care advice as model-specific guidance.
Protect water resistance
Know what the rating does—and does not—mean
Check the marking on your watch’s case back and consult its own manual. In the L896 manual, markings of 3, 5, 10, and 30 bar are shown as equivalent to overpressure values of 30, 50, 100, and 300 metres under ISO 22810. Those are marking and test-pressure equivalences, not a blanket guarantee that a watch marked “30 m” is suitable for swimming or diving. Water use advice depends on the exact watch and its instructions.

Keep the crown and push-pieces secured
Before immersion, push the crown and any push-pieces in or screw them down, as applicable to your model. Do not operate them underwater. The L896 manual also warns that a shock to the crown can affect water resistance.
Rinse after seawater and arrange a check
After contact with seawater, rinse the watch with fresh water, following the L896 manual’s guidance. That manual recommends having water resistance checked once a year by an approved Longines Service Centre. This is an annual interval for checking water resistance—not evidence of a recommended interval for a full movement service.
Water resistance can change as gaskets age or after an impact. Longines advises owners not to open the watch themselves; have a water-resistance check performed by an approved service centre.

Choose the right route for maintenance or repair
For inspection, adjustment, maintenance, or repair, Longines directs owners to an official dealer or an approved Longines Service Centre. Its service page describes two different service scopes; the centre assesses the watch and provides an estimate with a more detailed description of the work.
| Service | Work described by Longines |
|---|---|
| Partial service | Assessment and identification; separation of case and movement; case and bracelet cleaning; quartz battery replacement; case reassembly, with parts exchanged if needed to guarantee water resistance; rate and aesthetic controls; and water-tightness control where applicable. |
| Full service | Includes the listed case, battery, control, and service-warranty operations, plus case disassembly and polishing where applicable; movement disassembly or replacement; cleaning of movement components; reassembly and oiling; and replacement of worn spare parts. |
These descriptions are service scopes, not a recommendation that every watch needs a full service. The reviewed Longines materials do not establish one general movement-service interval for all models. The service page displays CHF prices, which should not be treated as rates for other countries or assumed to be current; ask your local service centre for a current estimate.
Longines states that work carried out by an official dealer or approved Longines Service Centre is guaranteed to comply with its standards. Use the official watch service request page to find the appropriate next step.

Check warranty terms before authorizing work
Longines’ reviewed 2025 manual states an international warranty of 24 months for watches generally and five years for mechanical watches purchased from 1 January 2021, subject to the applicable warranty conditions. The terms exclude battery life and normal wear, as well as specified damage associated with improper use, neglect, accidents, or failure to follow instructions. The manual also excludes watches handled by non-approved persons for battery replacement, service, or repairs. Check your valid warranty certificate and local terms before authorizing work. Longines’ service pricing page separately states a 24-month warranty on service work.

What not to assume about everyday care
The available Longines materials do not establish a universal routine cleaning method, battery-life duration, model-wide water-use guidance, or a general movement-overhaul interval. Use your exact manual or ask Longines support about those questions. Do not open the case to clean or inspect the movement yourself.
