Follow your watch’s manual first: winding, water resistance, cleaning, and service intervals vary by model and movement. For everyday care, wind and set it only as instructed, keep it away from strong magnets and hard impacts, clean it in ways suited to its materials, and treat water resistance as something that needs periodic checking—not a permanent guarantee. A mechanical watch’s rate can also vary with temperature, position, use, and how fully wound it is.
Start with the instructions for your exact watch
Before winding, setting, washing, or exposing a watch to water, identify its model or reference and consult its manufacturer’s instructions. Watches differ in winding method, crown design, movement, power reserve, water-resistance rating, strap and case materials, and recommended service schedule. Do not assume advice for one brand or model applies to another, and never force a crown that resists turning.

That distinction matters even for apparently simple instructions. Rolex guidance, for example, describes different winding counts in separate care materials: its FAQ says about 20 clockwise turns to get a stopped watch going, while its care guidance says a minimum of 25 turns for adequate partial winding. Those counts are not universal directions; a Rolex owner should use the guide for the specific model.

How to wind and restart a mechanical watch
Understand why it stops
A mechanical movement runs on energy stored in its mainspring. An automatic, or self-winding, watch replenishes that energy through wrist movement, but it can stop if it is left unworn longer than its power reserve. A stopped watch is not necessarily broken.

Wind according to the model manual
- Check the manual for the correct winding and crown procedure for the watch’s caliber and model.
- If the instructions call for manual winding, turn the crown as directed and stop if you feel unusual resistance. Do not apply force.
- Once winding or setting is complete, return the crown to its specified secured position. On a screw-down crown, screw it down fully as instructed; an unsecured crown can compromise water resistance.
Rolex says watches worn daily do not need manual winding, while a watch that has stopped after being set aside should be wound manually before wearing. That is Rolex-specific guidance; winding needs and procedures differ among watches.
What affects a mechanical watch’s accuracy?
A mechanical watch’s rate—the amount it gains or loses over time—can change with several conditions. Seiko identifies temperature, magnetism, shock, resting position, use patterns, and mainspring winding state as influences. The movement’s small metal parts respond to these conditions, so a variation in rate does not by itself identify a fault.
- Temperature: Metal parts expand and contract as temperature changes. Seiko’s guidance says high temperatures tend toward time loss and low temperatures toward time gain; it advises avoiding exposure below 5°C or above 35°C.
- Magnetism: Strong magnetic sources can affect a mechanical watch. Seiko says an affected watch can remain magnetized after it is removed from the source.
- Shock and impact: Hard impacts may affect the movement or other components. Seiko advises removing the watch for sports involving strong impacts.
- Position: Gravity affects the movement differently in different resting orientations, so the rate can vary while the watch is off the wrist.
- Winding state and use: Rate can vary depending on how fully wound the mainspring is and how the watch is worn.
How to investigate a change in timekeeping
Observe the pattern before drawing a conclusion
If the watch begins gaining or losing noticeably, note how it is worn, how regularly it is wound, where it is stored, and whether it has been exposed to unusual heat, cold, magnets, or impact. A sudden rate change can have more than one cause; the rate alone is not enough to diagnose magnetism or damage.

Try a resting-position comparison
Seiko suggests storing a watch in different positions for 7 to 8 hours and comparing its rate, then choosing the position that minimizes the observed gain or loss. This is a manufacturer’s practical suggestion, not a guaranteed accuracy improvement for every watch.
Seek qualified help when the change persists
If a mechanical watch continues to gain or lose substantially, or has been exposed to a strong magnetic source, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Seiko recommends an authorized service center for demagnetization. Rolex directs owners with accuracy concerns to an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center.
There is no single seconds-per-day tolerance established here for all mechanical watches. Compare observed performance with the accuracy specification for your own reference, or ask the manufacturer or service center to assess it.

How to clean a mechanical watch safely
Choose a cleaning method based on the watch’s materials and stated water resistance. For routine surface dust or fingerprints, an ordinary clean, soft microfiber cloth is a suitable starting point where the manufacturer permits it; a specialized branded cloth is not established as necessary.

Rolex says its case and bracelet can be washed occasionally with soapy water and a soft brush, with the winding crown screwed down first. It recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water after exposure to sea water to remove salt and sand. This instruction concerns Rolex cases and bracelets; it does not extend to leather straps, and it should not be applied to other watches without checking their manuals.
Water resistance: check the model and the watch’s condition
“Mechanical” does not mean safe for swimming or showering. Water resistance depends on the specific watch, its crown and seals, and the condition of its components. Do not infer a safe activity from a general description or rating without consulting the model’s instructions.

As examples limited to the named families, Rolex lists at least 100 metres of water resistance for Oyster Perpetual models and 50 metres for Perpetual 1908 models. Those figures are not ratings for all Rolex watches or for mechanical watches generally. Rolex also says the crown must be screwed down fully to maintain the seal.
Water resistance can deteriorate as gaskets age, or if parts deform after a shock. Seiko advises periodic service partly because degraded gaskets or shock damage can compromise water resistance. Have water resistance checked as recommended for your watch, especially before planned water exposure if its condition or service history is uncertain.
When should a mechanical watch be serviced?
Follow the recommendation for your watch’s model and real-life use; there is no universal service interval. Manufacturer guidance differs: Rolex recommends service approximately every 10 years depending on model and use, while Seiko’s general guidance is about every three years, with frequency depending on climate and individual care.

These are the respective manufacturers’ recommendations, not evidence that one interval fits every mechanical watch. Consult the instructions for your reference and consider its environment, usage, performance, and service history. Seiko explains that worn parts and aged oil may lead to time loss or stopping, while degraded gaskets can affect water resistance.
Rolex describes its complete service as dismantling and ultrasonic cleaning, inspecting the parts and replacing those that fail specifications, lubricating the movement, conducting electronic timing tests, refinishing, and checking water resistance, power reserve, and precision. That is Rolex’s description of its own service process, not a universal checklist for every maker.
