Care for a mechanical watch by winding it as its maker directs, cleaning it gently, keeping it away from strong magnets and unnecessary shocks, and treating water resistance as something that can deteriorate. There is no single winding routine or service interval that applies to every watch: the model, movement, condition, and use matter.
Wind it according to its movement
First check whether your watch is hand-wound or automatic, then follow the instructions for its specific model. An automatic watch winds as you wear it, but if it stops, it may need manual winding to get started.

Hand-wound watches
Wind the crown as described in the manual and stop when you feel resistance. Do not force it. Cartier warns against forcing the crown at the end of winding; Jaeger-LeCoultre likewise advises stopping at resistance. Their recommendations, and Audemars Piguet’s advice to wind its mechanical watches at least once a month, are maker-specific rather than universal rules. Automatic watches
Wrist movement powers an automatic watch, but a stopped watch may need a manual wind before it runs. For example, TAG Heuer advises turning the crown clockwise about 30–40 times or until the seconds hand starts moving; Audemars Piguet recommends at least 30 turns for its self-winding watches. These counts apply to those manufacturers’ guidance, not every calibre. TAG Heuer also advises taking the watch off your wrist before winding. Consult your own manual for the correct procedure. Clean the case and strap without risking damage
For everyday dust and fingerprints, wipe the watch with a soft, dry cloth. A soft microfiber cloth is suitable for this routine. More thorough cleaning depends on the watch’s water resistance, its condition, and the maker’s instructions.
When damp cleaning is appropriate
Hamilton says its water-resistant cases, steel bracelets, and rubber straps may be cleaned with a small brush and soapy water, then rinsed with clean water and dried with a soft cloth. TAG Heuer also recommends a microfiber cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush for gentle external cleaning. Use a damp brush or soapy water only when the watch’s manual permits it and its water resistance is known to be intact; do not wet-clean a watch with unknown or compromised seals. Protect leather and avoid harsh conditions
Keep leather straps away from water and other liquids, which can accelerate wear. Cartier also advises avoiding hot environments such as saunas and hammams. Follow the watch and strap maker’s care instructions, and do not immerse a watch simply because it is described as water-resistant. Cartier’s day-to-day advice covers these precautions.
Protect it from water, magnetism, and impacts
Water resistance can change
Water resistance relies on seals and the condition of the case, crown, pushers, and crystal; it is not a permanent guarantee. Seals age, and knocks, perspiration, chlorine, salt water, ultraviolet exposure, and cosmetics can compromise water resistance. Check the rating and instructions for your exact model, and ensure the crown is in its specified normal or screwed-down position before exposure to water. Never operate the crown or pushers underwater. Hamilton and Cartier explain the relevant risks.

After swimming in salt or chlorinated water, rinse a suitable water-resistant watch with fresh water and dry it. If condensation appears beneath the crystal, treat the watch as no longer watertight and contact a boutique or authorized dealer, as Girard-Perregaux advises.
Keep it away from strong magnets and shocks
Magnetism can disrupt timekeeping; TAG Heuer explains that magnetic effects can cause hairspring coils to stick together and alter the rate. Avoid strong magnetic sources and unnecessary impacts. If the watch suddenly runs unusually fast or slow, stops, or has suffered a hard knock or water ingress, arrange an assessment by an authorized or otherwise qualified watch service professional. How often does a mechanical watch need servicing?
There is no universal service interval. Manufacturer advice varies, and a full movement overhaul is different from a functional check or a water-resistance test. The appropriate schedule depends on the model and calibre, service history, water exposure, and symptoms.

These are examples of different makers’ recommendations, not a schedule to average or apply to another brand. Consult your model’s manual and an authorized service provider. Water-resistance checks may be appropriate more often than a movement overhaul, especially if the watch is regularly worn in water. If its timekeeping changes noticeably or it malfunctions, seek advice rather than waiting for a calendar interval.
