Its mainspring stores the energy, then releases it gradually to power the movement. The stated number is a running-time rating—not a guarantee that an automatic watch will become fully wound after a particular number of hours on your wrist.
What a power reserve measures
The mainspring sits in a barrel and supplies energy as it unwinds. Power reserve describes the movement’s approximate running time after that spring has been fully wound. Once the stored energy is spent, the watch stops until it is wound again. Hamilton’s movement guide describes the amount of stored energy as varying by movement; Longines explains the reserve as the time a fully wound mechanical watch will run.

Manual-wind and automatic watches
In a manual-wind watch, turning the crown winds the mainspring. In an automatic watch, a rotor turns with wrist movement and winds the spring. Automatic does not mean self-sustaining: if the watch is left unworn, or wrist motion does not wind it sufficiently, it eventually runs down. Orient Watch USA’s explanation of mechanical watches describes this winding action.
How long a mechanical watch typically runs
There is no single reserve that applies to all mechanical watches. The rating depends on the movement’s design, including factors such as mainspring length, energy demands and whether the movement uses multiple barrels. Manufacturer figures illustrate the range, but they are not a standardized cross-brand comparison.

| Source and scope | Stated power reserve |
|---|---|
| Longines, general statement about average automatic watches | Approximately 36–48 hours |
| Longines, its own automatic watches | Approximately 64 hours for most models |
| Patek Philippe, self-winding movements, with specific-model exceptions | 38–48 hours |
| Baume & Mercier, automatic watches depending on model | Approximately 40–120 hours; the Baumatic line is specified at 120 hours, or five days |
| Orient Watch USA, brand-level average in a support article modified March 29, 2022 | 40+ hours |
| Grand Seiko 9SA4, specific movement and its instructions | Approximately 80 hours fully wound, 56 hours at two-thirds wound and 32 hours at one-third wound |
The Longines, Patek Philippe and Baume & Mercier figures come from their respective undated manufacturer pages; the Grand Seiko figures apply specifically to the 9SA4 instructions. See Longines, Patek Philippe, Baume & Mercier and Grand Seiko for their published guidance. These examples show why a reserve should be checked for the particular movement rather than inferred from the word “automatic.”
What a power-reserve indicator tells you
A reserve indicator is an optional display of winding state or approximate remaining running time. Designs vary: a watch may use an arc, a linear scale, a color gauge or an “up/down” display. There is no universal scale, so interpret the markings using that watch’s instructions.

For example, the Grand Seiko 9SA4 instructions associate the indicator with approximately 80 hours when fully wound, 56 hours at two-thirds and 32 hours at one-third. Those values describe that documented movement, not other Grand Seiko calibers or mechanical watches generally. Its instructions recommend checking the indicator after removing the watch and winding if needed to maintain enough reserve until the next time it is worn.
How to use the reserve in everyday wear
Estimate whether the watch will keep running while set aside
Compare the watch’s stated reserve with how long you expect to leave it unworn, and remember that the rating starts from fully wound. A watch removed Friday night and picked up Monday morning may still be running—or may have stopped—depending on its actual reserve and how wound it was when removed. A longer reserve can be useful if you rotate watches or take one off for a weekend, but it does not remove the need to check the watch before relying on it.

Account for how an automatic watch is worn
The reserve specification does not say how quickly a watch will wind on the wrist. Wrist motion, activity, fit and movement design affect self-winding; someone who spends much of the day at a desk may need to wind more than someone with greater wrist motion. Longines and Baume & Mercier both note that winding depends on the wearer’s movement and wearing conditions. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that wearing it for a set number of hours will fully wind it.
Wind or restart it according to its manual
If a watch stops or its indicator shows little reserve, use its own instructions. Winding guidance differs by model: Patek Philippe’s care recommendations say its manual-wind watches should preferably be wound each morning and suggest a few gentle crown turns to restart a stopped watch. Baume & Mercier’s instructions specify different turn counts for standard and Baumatic models and warn against forcing a manual watch’s crown past resistance. These are manufacturer- and model-specific directions, not universal winding rules.
- Do not force the crown if it meets resistance; consult the model’s instructions.
- Do not shake an automatic watch to build reserve. Baume & Mercier says shaking is ineffective and could damage the movement.
- Manually winding an automatic watch is appropriate only when its own instructions allow it.
Choosing what to pay attention to
When comparing mechanical watches, consider the stated reserve alongside your routine: how often you wear the watch, whether it rests for a weekend, and whether you want an indicator to see its winding state. An indicator is a convenience, not a requirement; the reserve rating and model manual remain useful even when a watch has no indicator. Use the published figure for the exact movement or model, since brand-wide generalizations and specific-caliber examples are not interchangeable.
