For routine cleaning, gently wipe the watch with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Keep liquids and cleaning products off the dial unless the current manual for your exact watch explicitly permits a particular method. A panda dial is a contrasting color layout, not a special material or cleaning instruction; the watch’s make, reference, finishes, strap and water-resistance condition determine what is safe.
How to clean the dial and watch exterior
Start with a dry cloth
For dust and fingerprints on accessible surfaces, use a clean, soft, dry cloth and light pressure. Hamilton recommends periodic cleaning with a soft, dry cloth for its watches; this is a conservative routine for exterior marks, not permission to scrub or polish every finish. If grit is visible, lift it away carefully rather than rubbing it across the crystal, where it could scratch.

Keep cleaners and cosmetics away
Do not spray alcohol, household cleaner, detergent, polish, perfume or other chemicals onto the watch. Hamilton warns that solvents, detergents, perfume and cosmetics can damage the case or strap or bracelet and impair seals. Avoid abrasive cloths and polishing compounds unless the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact watch specifically call for them.

Can you use water to clean a watch face?
Only if the exact model’s current manual allows it and its condition is suitable. A water-resistance marking is not a guarantee that an older or damaged watch is safe to wet: TAG Heuer notes that aging gaskets or shocks to parts such as the crown, pushers and crystal can affect water resistance. Check the stated specification and make sure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down, as applicable, before considering any moisture.

Wet-cleaning directions are specific to particular models and exterior surfaces. For example, TAG Heuer’s October 2025 Calibres 5, 7 & 9 guide describes gentle cleaning with warm water and a microfiber cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush, advises against soap, and says not to immerse the watch. Its instruction is not a universal method for panda-dial chronographs. Hamilton’s brush-and-soapy-water advice is limited to water-resistant cases, steel bracelets and rubber straps.
TAG Heuer’s guide states: “Avoid using any soap as it can leave particles in small spaces and do not immerse the watch in water.” Follow the guide for the applicable models rather than extending that method to a different watch.

Keep the strap material in mind
Do not assume advice for a metal bracelet applies to leather, fabric, plated or delicate finishes. Audemars Piguet advises keeping water off leather straps. Use the specific manufacturer’s instructions for the case and strap or bracelet together; if the manual does not clearly permit wet cleaning, stick to a dry cloth.
Protect the chronograph controls
Do not press the chronograph pushers while cleaning with water, while the watch is wet, or underwater. Patek Philippe advises against using function controls underwater or when the watch is still wet. Audemars Piguet likewise advises against operating the crown and push-pieces underwater except on its diver models. Dry wiping the exterior does not require operating the chronograph.

If the watch has been exposed to salt water or chlorinated water, rinse it with fresh water only when its rating and manual permit that step. Do not use the rinse as a reason to operate controls underwater.
What to do about marks or moisture beneath the crystal
Dust, condensation, liquid or a mark under the crystal is inside the watch, not dirt on the accessible dial surface. Do not open the case or try to wipe the dial yourself. The manufacturer guidance directs owners to model-specific instructions and authorized service providers for technical work; it does not provide a consumer procedure for cleaning beneath the crystal. Arrange inspection by an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker.

Water-resistance checks and service timing
Water resistance can deteriorate, so follow the schedule for your watch’s brand and reference rather than treating any one interval as universal. Current manufacturer recommendations differ:
