A chronograph subdial that looks inactive may be working normally: some small dials count elapsed time only while the stopwatch is running, while others show ordinary seconds or another function. First identify what each dial does in your exact model’s manual; then check operation, crown position and power before attempting any model-specific correction. Avoid copying reset procedures or buying a battery based only on the word “chronograph.”
Identify what each subdial is meant to show
“Subdial” describes a small dial’s position on the watch face, not its function. Depending on the model, it may show elapsed chronograph minutes or seconds, running seconds, a 24-hour indication or another function. There is no universal rule that a particular dial position has the same job on every watch.

Find the brand and model or reference number, then consult its manual to identify the movement and the function of each hand. The large center seconds hand may be the chronograph hand
On some chronographs, the large central seconds hand is for stopwatch timing and stays still during ordinary timekeeping. Start the chronograph using the controls specified in your manual and observe whether the hand moves. Do not assume that a stationary center seconds hand or inactive elapsed-time counter is broken.

Use the correct start, stop and reset controls
Button functions vary by model. In Hamilton’s Quartz Chronographs manual, button A starts and stops timing and button B resets the chronograph to zero. That is an example for the watches covered by that manual, not a universal button layout. Follow your own manual, including any instruction to stop the chronograph before resetting. Check the crown and power without opening the watch
- Crown: Confirm it is fully pushed in, unless your model’s instructions say otherwise. A crown left out can interfere with operation.
- Solar watch: Follow the exact manual’s charging instructions and any low-charge operating restrictions. Citizen’s B620 troubleshooting guide covers charging and crown position for that caliber. Citizen B620 troubleshooting
- Quartz watch: Look for a low-power warning described in your model’s manual. For the Hamilton quartz chronographs covered by its manual, a seconds hand jumping at four-second intervals indicates that the battery is nearing the end of its life. Hamilton recommends battery replacement through an authorized service center or retailer because specialized tools are required. This warning and service advice apply to that Hamilton context, not every watch.
Battery specifications differ by model. Do not buy a replacement battery or open the case based only on the watch being a chronograph. Hamilton also warns that an empty battery can leak and damage the mechanism. Hamilton Quartz Chronographs Instruction Manual (10.2025)

If a chronograph hand does not reset to zero
A normal chronograph reset and a hand-position correction are not necessarily the same action. If the chronograph stops with a hand away from zero, consult the manual for the exact model or caliber before trying to adjust it. A procedure for one movement may not work on another, and quartz and mechanical chronographs can differ.
Use only the correction procedure for your caliber
Citizen’s B620 guide documents a caliber-specific correction involving pulling the crown out two steps, holding the upper-right button, setting the chronograph seconds hand to zero, pushing the crown in and completing the process with the lower-right button. Citizen’s H50 instructions also describe adjustment when chronograph hands do not point to zero and note that a strong shock can move the chronograph minute hand from zero. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker if the correct operating and correction steps do not restore function, or if the watch has been exposed to water or suffered an impact. Do not force a pusher or open the case: the appropriate battery, repair procedure and tools depend on the watch, and a case opened or closed incorrectly may compromise its protection.

When requesting help, note which hand is affected, whether start, stop and reset respond, whether the watch keeps time, and whether it recently had a battery change, impact or water exposure. Those observations help a professional assess the problem without guessing at an internal cause.
