On many two-pusher chronographs, press the upper button once to start timing, press it again to stop, then press the lower button to reset the chronograph hands to zero. That is a common layout, not a universal rule: confirm the controls and any special instructions in your watch’s manual before operating it.
What a chronograph watch does
A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function: it measures elapsed time while the watch continues to show ordinary time. Hamilton describes it as a mechanism that measures elapsed time “without disrupting its basic time-telling functionality.” The chronograph hands and registers are separate from the watch’s normal time display.

- Identify the controls. Check the manual for your exact model. In the common arrangement shown in TUDOR’s chronograph tutorial, the upper pusher is at 2 o’clock and the lower pusher is at 4 o’clock.
- Unlock screw-down pushers if your watch has them. Follow the manual’s instructions; some models require this before using the chronograph.
- Start timing. Press the designated start/stop pusher once. On the common layout, this is the upper pusher. The chronograph’s elapsed-time hand or hands begin moving.
- Stop timing. Press the same pusher again. Read the elapsed interval from the chronograph hands and the dial markings or counters.
- Reset. Once timing has stopped, press the reset pusher. On the common layout, this is the lower pusher; the chronograph hands return to zero.
Do not assume every watch uses this button arrangement. The Frederique Constant chronograph instructions and other manufacturer guides are useful reminders that functions and controls can vary by model.

How to read the elapsed time
Use the labels on your dial and the model’s manual to identify which hand or register measures seconds, minutes or hours. Many chronographs have a central elapsed-seconds hand and one or more subdials, but not every small dial is necessarily a chronograph counter. Traditional chronographs can display elapsed seconds, minutes and hours on separate indicators.
The scale, precision and maximum timing range depend on the watch’s movement and dial. For example, TUDOR describes the reading precision of its tutorial’s example as a quarter of a second; that figure should not be applied to other watches. Likewise, Grand Seiko’s instructions for calibers 9R96, 9R86 and 9R84 describe a 30-minute counter that makes two rotations in an hour. That behavior is specific to those calibers, not a general chronograph rule.

Can you time more than one interval?
Some chronographs support accumulated timing: stop the chronograph, then restart it to add another interval to the elapsed-time total before resetting. This is a documented function for the Grand Seiko calibers covered in its instructions, but it is not guaranteed on every watch. Check your manual for the supported sequence and any other functions; some chronographs have more specialized controls.

If the pushers or hands do not behave as expected
- The pusher will not operate: Check whether it is screw-locked and follow the manual’s unlocking procedure.
- The hands do not return to zero: Do not try a generic adjustment sequence. Reset and hand-alignment procedures vary; use the model-specific manual or seek service guidance.
- You are unsure about operating the pushers in water: Do not assume the chronograph can be operated underwater. Check the watch’s own manual for water-resistance conditions and pusher-use guidance.
