Water resistance and battery type are not universal: a generic “water resistant” label does not tell you whether swimming is safe, and a similar-looking cell is not necessarily the right one. For a conventional replaceable battery, a retailer, jeweler, or authorized service center is usually the safer choice—especially if you want the watch’s seals and water resistance checked.
How should you care for an everyday quartz watch?
Start with the watch’s model-specific manual and the markings on its case. These determine how much water exposure the watch is designed for and how to handle its controls. Clean the exterior gently, and avoid treating everyday wear as proof that a watch is suitable for water.

Use the water-resistance marking, not a generic label
Seiko’s analogue quartz instructions distinguish watches with no water-resistance marking from those marked 3 bar, 5 bar, or 10, 15, or 20 bar. The permitted activities differ by category: a watch without a “WATER RESISTANT” marking is not water resistant, while Seiko describes 3 bar as suitable for splashes or rain, not swimming or diving. Rinse off salt and mud, then dry the watch
After seawater or mud exposure, Casio advises rinsing covered watches with clean fresh water. Seiko likewise advises rinsing with fresh water and drying thoroughly after seawater exposure. Keep wet controls untouched
Do not operate the crown or buttons while the watch is wet or submerged unless its own instructions explicitly allow it. Casio’s general guidance also cautions against baths, heated pools, and saunas, and warns that soap or detergent can reduce water-resistance performance. Watch for persistent condensation
Fog on the outside of the crystal may clear as conditions change. If condensation appears inside and does not clear relatively quickly, Casio advises stopping use and contacting the retailer or an authorized service center. Service seals according to the model’s guidance
Casio recommends replacing gaskets about every two or three years for the watches covered by its guidance. That is not a universal schedule for every brand or case: use your watch’s own service recommendations and ask a qualified provider whether its seals need attention. How do you find the right battery?
Look up the exact model in its official manual or product specifications and use the cell type listed there. Do not choose a battery from a generic photograph, guess from the watch’s size, or substitute a similar-looking cell. Check whether the cell is rechargeable
A depleted non-rechargeable cell is replaced; a rechargeable cell is recharged for reuse. Citizen identifies its solar-powered Eco-Drive watches as using rechargeable cells. Check the specific model’s specifications before arranging service: a rechargeable cell is not an ordinary replaceable-battery job. Citizen battery guidance
Should you replace the battery yourself?
For a conventional replaceable cell, manufacturer guidance favors professional service. Casio recommends the original retailer or an authorized Casio service center; Citizen recommends a jewelry store or an Authorized Citizen Service Center. Choose a provider who will address the seals
When arranging service, ask whether the provider will inspect water resistance and handle gasket service if needed. Closing the case after opening it does not by itself establish that the watch remains water resistant. Casio specifically advises requesting a water-resistance check during battery replacement.

When should you replace a depleted battery?
Do not leave a depleted cell in the watch indefinitely. Symptoms depend on the model: Casio notes that some covered watches may show pronounced timekeeping error, a dim display, or a blank display when power is low. Citizen warns that a depleted cell left in place may leak and severely damage the watch. - Identify the watch: Find the exact model number and consult its official manual or product specification.
- Confirm the cell category: Determine whether it uses a replaceable non-rechargeable cell or a rechargeable one.
