Start by confirming what watch you actually own. MB&F’s official material identifies the Legacy Machine N°1 and, separately, the Legacy Machine 101 EVO; it does not establish an official model called “Legacy Machine 1 EVO.” That distinction changes the applicable water-resistance, crown, strap and shock-protection information.

The official Legacy Machine N°1 page describes a manually wound dual-time watch with a vertical power-reserve display and a 14 mm flying balance wheel. MB&F’s separate Legacy Machine 101 EVO page describes an EVO model with its own case and water-resistance specifications. The reviewed official pages do not call the LM1 an EVO and do not provide a manual for an “LM1 EVO.”

That uncertainty is operationally important. A service center needs the correct parts, crown functions, case construction and testing procedure. A description copied from a sales listing is not enough to establish any of those details. The safest first service is therefore an identity check, not a winding experiment or a pressure test.

The table also explains why an apparently useful specification can be misleading. The 80 m, 8 ATM and 270-foot figures are real MB&F figures, but they are attached to the LM101 EVO name. They are not a family-wide rating and are not a substitute for a reference-specific instruction sheet.
How to verify the watch
- Locate the reference and serial numbers on the watch and in the purchase documents. Do not remove a caseback to find them.
- Photograph the case, both crowns, dial layout, strap and any engraved numbers in good light. Keep the images with the original invoice, warranty card and service records.
- Ask an official MB&F retailer to confirm the exact reference in writing. Include the serial number and photographs rather than relying on the seller’s wording.
- Request the correct operating and water-resistance guidance for that reference. If the retailer identifies a model other than LM1, follow that model’s instructions instead of the LM1 information below.
Ask the retailer to record the confirmed reference on the estimate and final service report. That creates a useful chain between the serial number, the work performed and future warranty questions. MB&F’s Warranty page states: “In addition, all maintenance and repairs must be carried out exclusively by an official MB&F retailer.” The same page says a watch may be sent to an official retailer or directly to MB&F for service. An independent repairer is therefore not an equivalent route under the manufacturer’s stated policy.
There is no verified competing service option to compare with that route. The meaningful choice is which official channel is practical for you: a nearby authorized retailer or direct contact with MB&F. Confirm the route before handing the watch to a third party, even if the requested job sounds limited to a seal, crown or regulation.
A practical service request
- Contact an official MB&F retailer, or MB&F directly, before shipping anything. Explain that the watch is being presented as an “LM1 EVO” and that the reference still needs confirmation.
- Provide the serial number, purchase date, country of purchase, warranty documentation, photographs and a concise description of the issue.
- Ask the service contact to identify the reference, confirm the receiving address and explain the approved shipping and insurance requirements. Follow its instructions rather than choosing a carrier or customs description yourself.

Describe the condition honestly when requesting service. Mention a drop, magnet exposure, water contact, opened case or damaged crown even if the watch still runs. Concealing an event can make diagnosis harder and does not turn resulting damage into a manufacturing defect.
Water: do not borrow the LM101 EVO rating
No model-specific water-resistance rating for an “LM1 EVO” was verified. The 80 m / 8 ATM / 270 feet figure belongs to the separately named Legacy Machine 101 EVO. It is not evidence that an LM1, or a watch described by a seller as an LM1 EVO, can be worn to the same depth.
MB&F’s general warranty language says an MB&F watch may be used in water, while also excluding activities such as diving, surfing, water-ski and wind-surf. It conditions its water-resistance guarantee on the glass, bezel, case-back and crown remaining undamaged. That general wording cannot be converted into a rating for an unidentified reference.
A conservative water decision
- Until the reference and rating are confirmed, keep the watch away from swimming, bathing, showers, pools, seawater and deliberate rinsing.
- Do not test water resistance at home or assume that a crown feels screw-down because another EVO model has one.
- Tell the official service channel about any impact, opened case, damaged crystal or crown before requesting a water-resistance assessment.
- If the watch has been exposed to water, stop treating it as water-safe and contact the official service route promptly for advice.
Water resistance is also a condition of the case, not just a number printed on a page. MB&F’s warranty wording specifically refers to an undamaged glass, bezel, case-back and crown. Seal replacement and service timing
After the warranty period, MB&F says seals should be replaced regularly by an official retailer. The cited page does not specify a number of months or years, and it does not publish a universal complete-service interval for the LM1.
That means a generic “every five years” rule should not be presented as an MB&F requirement. Ask the retailer to set a schedule based on the confirmed reference, the condition of the seals, whether the case has been opened, the watch’s environment and the intended use. Request that the work order state which seals were changed and whether water-resistance testing was performed.
Seal work and a complete movement service are separate questions. A retailer may recommend one, both or neither after inspection. Ask what prompted each recommendation, which components are included, whether parts are being replaced because of wear or damage, and whether the quoted work changes the warranty assessment. The official pages do not define a universal package called a “full service,” so the estimate should spell out its contents.
Routine operation when the watch is confirmed as an LM1
The following description comes from MB&F’s classic Legacy Machine N°1 page and is not a substitute for reference-specific instructions. The LM1 uses a hand-wound, single-barrel movement. The crown at approximately 4 o’clock winds the movement and sets the right-hand time display; the crown at approximately 8 o’clock sets the left-hand display.
Use the crowns deliberately
- Confirm with the retailer that the case is the documented LM1 and that the crown functions match this layout.
- Use the 4 o’clock crown for winding and for setting the right display, as described by MB&F.
- Use the 8 o’clock crown for setting the left display.
- If a crown does not turn smoothly, feels unusually tight, or does not engage as expected, stop rather than forcing it. Record which crown was involved and report it to the official service channel.
MB&F’s cited page does not provide a winding-turn count, a force limit or a universal setting procedure for a watch marketed as “LM1 EVO.” Do not invent one from another model’s manual or from a generic mechanical-watch guide. The same caution applies to power-reserve expectations, setting restrictions and any instruction about operating a crown at a particular time of day: obtain those directions for the confirmed reference.

Daily handling that protects warranty eligibility
MB&F explicitly lists violent shocks, excessive temperatures and powerful magnetic fields as examples of negligent or inappropriate treatment excluded from warranty protection. Keep the watch away from those conditions, and tell the service center about any such event even if the watch still appears to run.
Do not use the balance bridge, crystal or crowns as a handle when putting the watch on or removing it. The official pages do not prescribe a special storage box or cleaning product, so the defensible advice is simply to avoid situations that can shock, heat, magnetize or wet an unidentified case and to follow the retailer’s handling instructions.
After a shock or suspected magnetism
- Do not try to correct the timekeeping by repeatedly adjusting both displays.

Accepting a verbal estimate without a scope
Because no universal price or service package is published, request a written estimate that separates diagnosis, movement work, seals, cosmetic work, parts, testing and shipping. That prevents a “complete service” label from hiding what is or is not included.

Arrange an assessment without further experimentation when the watch has suffered a hard impact, been exposed to water, developed a damaged crystal or crown, stopped unexpectedly, or cannot be positively identified from its documents and serial number. The goal is not to diagnose the movement at home; it is to preserve evidence of the condition and route the watch to the manufacturer’s authorized service path.
Contact the service channel before attempting to wind a watch that has stopped after an impact or water event. Tell it whether either crown was moved, whether the case was opened and how long the watch was exposed. Those details help the official technician decide whether immediate inspection is appropriate.
