Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes, you can change a Timex Weekender strap, but first identify how your exact watch attaches it. Some Weekenders use spring bars; others use a one-piece slip-through strap. The width also varies by model: Timex lists a 20 mm band for the 40 mm TW2W86000 and an 18 mm band for the 37 mm TW2Y09100. Use the matching method and verify the width for your watch before buying a replacement.
Identify your Weekender’s strap attachment
Check the watch’s model reference and inspect where the strap meets the case before removing anything. Timex’s guide, “How to change a watch strap” (August 12, 2024), covers both spring-bar and slip-through constructions. The two methods are different, so do not assume that every Weekender takes the same kind of strap.

The model reference matters twice: it helps you confirm the strap width, and it helps you determine which removal and installation procedure applies. A Weekender name or a case-size label alone is not enough to establish either detail for every version. Timex’s cited examples show two different combinations, so look up the exact reference or inspect the attachment before ordering parts or starting the change.
Spring-bar strap
A spring-bar strap has two separate halves. A small spring-loaded bar runs through the end of each half, with its ends seated in holes in the watch’s lugs. The lugs are the watch-case projections that hold the strap. To remove a half, a strap tool compresses one end of the bar so it can come out of a lug hole. Timex’s 40 mm Weekender TW2W86000 listing confirms replaceable spring bars.

Look for the separate strap halves and the bar ends seated between the lugs. If you can see that the attachment depends on a bar whose ends sit in the lugs, use the spring-bar procedure below. Do not try to pull the strap through the case as if it were a one-piece strap.
Slip-through strap
A slip-through strap is a single piece that passes through loops at the lugs and behind the watch case. It does not attach with spring bars, and Timex says this style needs no tools. Its 37 mm Weekender TW2Y09100 listing identifies a slip-through fabric strap.
With this construction, removal means unthreading the strap from the keeper and loops, not compressing a spring bar. If the strap threads through the case loops, use the slip-through procedure below. Do not try to prise off a loop or search for a spring bar that is not part of this attachment style.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the attachment is not clear, pause before applying force. The two constructions call for different actions, and Timex’s guidance does not establish that one method works for every Weekender. Verify the model reference or ask Timex for help if you cannot confidently identify the design.

Choose the correct replacement width
Lug width is the width of the strap where it joins the watch case. Match it to the exact Weekender reference rather than choosing by the Weekender name or case size alone. Timex’s replacement strap collection also sorts options by lug width. A strap that looks similar or is intended for a different Weekender is not necessarily the right fit.
| Timex Weekender example | Case size | Listed band/lug width | Attachment |
|---|---|---|---|
| TW2W86000 | 40 mm | 20 mm | Replaceable spring bars |
| TW2Y09100 | 37 mm | 18 mm | Slip-through fabric strap |
These are examples, not a specification for every Weekender. If you cannot confirm the reference or its width, check the watch’s product specification or contact Timex with the model number before ordering. Timex’s US FAQ points customers to its replacement strap collection and customer service when they cannot find a suitable strap.
Check both width and construction
- For a confirmed 20 mm model, look for a replacement listed as 20 mm; for a confirmed 18 mm model, look for 18 mm. Those search phrases are useful only after you have verified the width of your watch.
- For a spring-bar watch, choose a strap that can be fitted with spring bars of the correct width and attachment style. The spring-bar method depends on the bar ends seating in the watch’s lug holes.
- For a slip-through watch, choose a one-piece strap that threads through its loops and behind the case. A spring-bar tool is not needed for this construction.
- Choose material and appearance to suit your preference after confirming fit. Timex’s cited guide covers quick-release and slip-through designs, but it does not name a universally best material or style.
Think of compatibility as a check of three separate things: width, attachment construction, and material or appearance preference. Width is the measurement at the case connection; construction determines whether the strap uses spring bars or threads through loops; style is the personal choice you make after fit is established. A match on one point does not establish a match on the others.
For a verified 20 mm Weekender, “20 mm watch strap” is a practical search phrase. For a verified 18 mm model, use “18 mm watch strap.” Do not use either phrase as a shortcut for identifying the model. Timex’s official examples establish 20 mm for TW2W86000 and 18 mm for TW2Y09100, but they do not set a size for all Weekenders. If a listing does not clearly state width or the relevant construction, check with its seller or use Timex’s replacement collection and support channels rather than guessing.

Change a spring-bar strap
Work over a table or desk covered with a soft cloth so the watch is protected and a released spring bar is less likely to bounce away. You will need a strap removal tool or strap pinning tool and the replacement strap. A lint-free cloth is optional for cleaning the lugs. The tool is for spring-bar versions only; it is unnecessary for a slip-through strap.
Set up before removing the first strap half. Keep the watch face-down on the cloth, have the replacement within reach, and work where you can keep track of a small released bar. Timex specifically cautions that the bar can “ping across the room and get lost.” The cloth protects the watch surface, while working close to the bar helps reduce the chance of losing it. Timex does not require special equipment beyond the strap tool and a soft work surface for this procedure.
- Lay the watch face-down. Place it on the soft cloth with the strap accessible. Make sure the watch is stable before putting the tool against the attachment.
- Release one spring bar end. Slide the notched end of the tool between the inside edge of a lug and the strap. Gently push toward the strap to compress the bar and free one end from its lug hole. Keep a hand close to the bar: Timex warns that it can “ping across the room and get lost.” The aim is to compress the spring-loaded end enough to release it, not to force the strap or bar.
- Remove the strap half. Lift it away once the bar end is free, then repeat on the other side. If needed, wipe the exposed lugs with the lint-free cloth. This is a convenient point to clean the area that the strap had covered, before the replacement is installed.
- Fit the first replacement half. Orient the strap correctly. Compress one end of its spring bar toward the center of the strap, seat the other end in one lug hole, then guide the compressed end into the opposite hole. Keep the bar aligned with the lug holes as you guide it into place.
- Check the bar. Confirm that both ends are engaged in the lug holes before moving on. Repeat the fitting process for the other strap half. Do not assume the second side is secure just because the first one engaged.
- Check the installation before wearing the watch. Verify that each spring bar is seated securely at both ends. Do not wear the watch if a bar is loose or has not engaged both lug holes. Timex’s instructions make checking both ends part of the fitting process, not an optional final flourish.
Use this procedure only if your particular Weekender has spring bars. If a bar resists movement, do not force it; get help from a jeweler or other professional. A tool is intended to compress a spring bar, not to solve an unclear attachment or a part that will not release.

Common spring-bar mistakes to avoid
- Starting before identifying the strap type: The spring-bar procedure does not apply to a strap that simply threads through loops. Check the watch first.
- Working without a soft surface or close control: A released bar can ping away and be lost. Timex recommends a soft-cloth-covered table or desk and cautions readers to watch for the bar.
- Forcing a resistant part: Stop if a bar or strap resists removal. Timex advises seeking professional help rather than forcing an attachment that is unclear or stuck.
- Assuming the new strap is secure after one end engages: Both ends of each bar need to sit in the lug holes. Check each bar at both ends before wearing the watch.
- Buying a tool for the wrong construction: A strap tool is useful for spring-bar versions. It is not needed for the slip-through style Timex describes.
Change a slip-through strap
This method requires no strap tool and no spring-bar removal. Timex’s procedure is to unthread the existing strap, then feed the replacement through the loops around the case. The order matters because the long, hole-punched end travels through the two watch loops and then through the keeper on the shorter strap piece.

- Band Length: 75mm and 125mm. Thickness: 3mm. This strap is designed to fit wrists 6" to 8" (15.5cm-20cm), but watch geometry also impacts fit

- Unthread the old strap. Pull it out of the keeper behind the case and the loops at the lugs. The aim is to free the strap from the watch, not to remove or alter the loops.
- Find the long end. On the replacement, identify the longer end with adjustment holes. Keep track of which piece is the shorter strap section, since its keeper is used later in the threading sequence.
- Feed it through the watch loops. Hold the watch upright. Pass the long end down through the loop at the 12 o’clock side, from front to back, then bring it back up through the loop at the 6 o’clock side. Follow this front-to-back, then back-up path rather than trying to attach the strap by spring bars.
- Thread it through the keeper. Pass the long end through the keeper on the shorter strap piece. Pull the strap through until it lies flat, then center the watch between the strap hardware. Check that the strap is not twisted as you draw it through.
- Buckle the watch. Fasten it as usual and check that the strap lies flat and the case remains centered. If it is not centered, adjust the strap through the loops before wearing it.
Because there are no spring bars to compress in this procedure, buying a spring-bar tool adds no benefit for this strap construction. The important checks are that the long end has followed the stated route, the strap lies flat, and the watch is centered between the hardware. If the strap does not thread as expected, stop and recheck the orientation and the attachment style rather than forcing it.

Stop if the attachment is unclear or a strap or bar resists removal. Forcing it risks damaging the watch or strap. Timex says a jeweler or other professional can change a strap if the job feels too difficult and can help find replacement spring bars if one is lost. The cited guidance does not call for improvising a replacement part or forcing a stuck bar.
If you lose a spring bar, ask a professional about finding a replacement, as Timex recommends. If you simply cannot identify a compatible strap, Timex’s US FAQ directs customers to its replacement strap collection and customer service. Have the model number available when seeking help so the question can be tied to the exact Weekender rather than the family name in general.
For product-specific information, consult Timex’s Weekender listing for your reference and its US replacement strap collection or customer service. The cited Timex listings establish the widths for TW2W86000 and TW2Y09100 only; they do not establish a single width or attachment type for the entire Weekender family. Inventory and product listings can change, so recheck the exact reference before ordering a specific strap.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you change the strap on a Timex Weekender?
Yes. Timex’s guidance covers both spring-bar straps and slip-through straps. Identify the exact watch’s attachment first: spring-bar straps use separate halves secured in lug holes, while slip-through straps thread through loops behind the case.
Do all Timex Weekender watches use the same strap width?
No single width is established for every Weekender in the cited information. Timex lists 20 mm for the 40 mm TW2W86000 and 18 mm for the 37 mm TW2Y09100. Check your exact model reference before ordering.
How do I know whether my Weekender uses spring bars or a slip-through strap?
Inspect how the strap connects to the case and check the product reference. Separate strap halves attached by bars seated in lug holes use the spring-bar method. A single strap that threads through loops at the lugs and behind the case is slip-through.
Do I need a tool to change a Timex Weekender strap?
Only the spring-bar method calls for a strap removal or pinning tool. Timex says the slip-through style needs no tools or spring-bar removal.
What should I do if a spring bar will not come out or I lose one?
Do not force a resistant bar. Timex says a jeweler or other professional can change the strap and can help find replacement spring bars if one is lost.
Where can I find the right replacement strap if I am unsure?
Check the exact Weekender product specification and Timex’s replacement strap collection. Timex’s US FAQ also points customers to customer service if they cannot find a suitable strap; provide the model number when asking.
The Bottom Line
Changing a Timex Weekender strap is possible, but the correct steps and size depend on the exact model. Verify whether it uses spring bars or a slip-through strap, confirm the lug width from the model reference, and check that the strap is securely installed before wearing the watch. Timex’s cited examples are 20 mm for the 40 mm TW2W86000 and 18 mm for the 37 mm TW2Y09100; neither size should be assumed for every Weekender.
