A depth rating alone does not establish that a watch meets the broader requirements for a diver’s watch. For swimming or everyday wear, choose according to the activity and the maker’s guidance rather than assuming every watch described as a “diver” is suitable for scuba.
What does ISO 6425 mean on a dive watch?
ISO 6425 is the International Organization for Standardization’s diver’s-watch standard. ISO lists ISO 6425:2018 as its current edition; it was published in October 2018 and confirmed in 2024. The standard’s scope describes watches designed to withstand diving at depths of at least 100 m and equipped with a secured system to indicate dive time that is visible in darkness. That 100 m figure is the scope threshold for the standard, not a rule that any watch marked 100 m is dive-qualified. ISO 6425:2018

Water resistance is only one part of the picture. Citizen’s explanation of diver’s-watch requirements also identifies readability, magnetic and shock resistance, strap strength, and other criteria. These are manufacturer explanations; for a purchase, check the maker’s conformity claim and documentation for the exact reference rather than inferring certification from the caseback or a depth number. Citizen’s diver-watch technology overview
What water resistance do you need?
Match the watch to the activity and follow the manufacturer’s stated limits. For actual scuba diving, look for an explicit ISO 6425 conformity or certification statement for the specific model, along with the rating and operating instructions. Do not assume a rating printed in metres by itself means the watch is appropriate for diving.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
For a useful comparison, record the stated water resistance and whether the maker specifically identifies that reference as ISO 6425 conforming or certified. If the product page does not make the intended use or conformity clear, consult the model documentation or ask the manufacturer before relying on it underwater.
How should the dive-time bezel work?
External unidirectional bezel
A unidirectional bezel lets a diver mark elapsed time. Its one-way movement is intended to limit the effect of accidental rotation: if the bezel moves in the permitted direction, elapsed time can appear longer, not shorter. Citizen describes setting the bezel before a dive and turning it anti-clockwise only. Check that the markings are easy to read and the bezel is practical to grip and operate. Protected internal bezel
An external unidirectional bezel is not the only design. A protected internal bidirectional bezel can provide a dive-time display while placing the rotating scale inside the case. Longines’ 2025 press release describes 39 mm Legend Diver models with an internal bidirectional bezel, 30 bar (300 m) water resistance, and ISO 6425 certification. Those specifications are reported by Longines for its models; they are an example of a different bezel arrangement, not an independent test or a recommendation. Whichever design you consider, assess the legibility and operation of the elapsed-time display, and verify the model’s own conformity claim. Do not treat bezel style alone as proof of suitability.

Can you read the dial in low light?
Check both ordinary time display and elapsed-time markings in poor light. ISO’s stated scope calls for a dive-time indication visible in darkness; Citizen notes that light declines underwater and describes luminous material on hands and indexes. Look at the actual dial and bezel markings, not just the presence of luminous hands: the elapsed-time scale also needs to be usable for the task. What should you check about the crown and controls?
A screw-down crown is designed to help prevent unintended operation and support water resistance, according to Citizen. Follow the specific maker’s instructions for setting and securing the crown and any other controls. Do not adjust a watch underwater unless its instructions expressly permit it. Which crystal should you choose?
There is no supported universal winner among sapphire, mineral, and acrylic crystals here, so do not assume a material is always best or scratch-proof. Check the exact reference’s documentation for its crystal material, shape, and thickness, and consider whether replacement is available and what the manufacturer’s warranty or service information says. Avoid inferring crystal construction from a brand name or price.
How do you check fit, including over a wetsuit?
Compare the listed case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length, and weight with a watch you already find comfortable. There is no universal ideal wrist size established by these sources, so use measurements and fit rather than a generic wrist-size rule.

If you plan to wear the watch over a wetsuit, check for a bracelet extension, adjustable clasp, or compatible longer strap, and confirm lug width and strap compatibility for the exact model. Citizen describes a band with a 20 mm extension; that figure applies to the band it describes, not to dive-watch straps generally. Longines lists strap options for its 2025 39 mm Legend Diver models. Do you need a helium escape valve?
Usually, this is not a feature to prioritize for ordinary recreational diving. Citizen discusses helium management in the context of saturation-diving models and notes that some models have a helium relief valve. Consider it only when your intended diving and the manufacturer’s guidance call for it. Citizen’s diver-watch technology overview
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before buying
- Confirm the maker’s stated water resistance and whether the exact reference is identified as ISO 6425 conforming or certified.
- Check the elapsed-time display’s type, direction or protection, grip, legibility, and ease of operation.
- Assess low-light readability of both time and dive-time indications.
- Read the operating instructions for the crown and other controls.
- Verify the crystal material and construction from model documentation, plus replacement and service information.
- Compare case dimensions and weight with a watch that fits you; check strap adjustment or wetsuit extension if needed.
- Consider specialized features such as helium relief only when they match the intended use and maker’s guidance.
