Choose a mechanical watch by matching its winding routine and documented specifications to how you will wear it. Decide between hand-winding and automatic winding, then check the exact model’s power reserve, performance claims, water-use instructions, dimensions, materials, comfort, and service support. Try it on if possible, and verify details in the maker’s current documentation for that reference.
How do I choose a mechanical watch?
Start with your habits rather than a broad category label. Will you wear the watch most days, rotate it with other watches, or enjoy winding it by hand? The answers help you choose a movement and reserve that fit your routine. Then assess the exact watch against the activities you have in mind and how it feels on your wrist.

- Winding type and stated power reserve
- Accuracy claim and what any certification actually tests
- Water-resistance rating and the maker’s instructions for your intended use

Confirm specifications for the exact reference in current official documentation. A general description of mechanical watches cannot establish how a particular model fits or performs.

Should I get a manual or automatic watch?
Manual: wind it yourself
A manual mechanical watch is wound by hand. Choose this if winding is a routine you actively want. Check the maker’s instructions for how to wind the specific model.
Automatic: the rotor winds as you wear it
An automatic watch has a rotor that moves with wrist motion and winds the mainspring. Hamilton describes the rotor as a metal weight that transfers energy through the natural movement of the wrist. Automatic watches still have a finite power reserve: one can stop if left unworn beyond that reserve. Hamilton’s FAQ explains the mechanism; the ISO horological vocabulary includes definitions for automatic and hand-wound watches.

How much power reserve do I need?
Power reserve is the time a fully wound watch can continue running without further winding. Compare the stated reserve with how long the watch may sit unworn between wears. If you rotate watches, a longer reserve may mean fewer occasions when the watch has stopped, but the suitable amount depends on your routine.

What does a chronometer certification tell me?
First distinguish a maker’s own accuracy claim from a certification, then check what the issuing body says the certification covers. A certification can provide evidence about specified tests; it does not establish every quality a buyer might care about.
For example, Tudor says its METAS Master Chronometer certification covers precision, magnetic resistance, waterproofness, and power reserve. Tudor gives a variation range of 0 to +5 seconds per day and says certified watches are tested against a 15,000-gauss magnetic field. These are figures for the certification as described by Tudor, not a guarantee about watches without that certification or about properties outside its stated scope. See Tudor’s METAS certification description.

What water resistance do I need?
Match water use to the instructions and rating for the exact watch reference. Do not treat a depth marking alone as proof that a watch is suitable for a particular activity; consult the maker’s user guide and follow its limitations. Patek Philippe likewise advises owners to verify a watch’s water resistance in the relevant user guide.
Water-resistant watches and diver’s watches are distinct terms in horological vocabulary, with ISO 22810 and ISO 6425 referenced respectively. The terminology does not replace the model’s own instructions. See the ISO definitions and Patek Philippe’s water-resistance guidance.

How should a watch fit my wrist?
Try the watch on when possible. Judge the whole combination—not just the case diameter—including case shape and thickness, weight, strap or bracelet, and whether it feels comfortable during ordinary movement. There is no universal wrist-size threshold that determines a good fit; personal comfort and the watch’s actual dimensions matter.
Check the exact model’s official specifications for dimensions and construction. Materials and finishes vary, and a general material label alone is not enough to establish how a particular watch will wear or hold up. If changing a strap or bracelet, verify its connection and sizing requirements for that exact watch before buying a replacement.
What should I consider about ownership and service?
Before buying, check the maker’s service guidance, warranty terms, and availability of authorized support where you live. Service intervals are not universal. Patek Philippe recommends servicing its quartz and mechanical watches every eight to ten years through an Official Service Center or Authorized Retailer; that is guidance for its watches, not a rule for every manufacturer. See Patek Philippe’s care recommendations.
Quick Recap
A final checklist before you buy
- Choose hand-winding or automatic winding based on the routine you prefer.
- Compare the exact model’s stated power reserve with how often you expect to wear it.
- Read the accuracy claim and certification scope instead of relying on the word “chronometer” alone.
- Check official water-use instructions for the activities you have in mind.
- Try the watch on if possible, and confirm its dimensions, materials, and strap or bracelet details in the specifications.
- Review warranty terms, authorized service options, and total price before deciding.
