A mechanical watch most often stops because its mainspring has run down: a hand-wound watch needs winding, while an automatic may have been unworn long enough—or moved too little—to exhaust its power reserve. Restart it only as the manufacturer instructs. If it will not restart, stops again despite correct winding, or began acting abnormally after a magnet or impact, arrange an inspection rather than forcing the crown or guessing at an internal fault.
How a mechanical watch keeps running
A mechanical watch runs on energy stored in its mainspring. As that spring unwinds, it powers the movement; when its stored energy is exhausted, the watch stops. A manual-wind watch gets energy when you wind its crown. An automatic watch also winds its mainspring through movement while worn, but it can still run down if left unworn or if activity has not built sufficient reserve. Grand Seiko’s troubleshooting guidance advises winding the mainspring or gently swinging a stopped watch to start it; Bucherer notes that an automatic may not build enough power with insufficient activity.

What to do when the watch stops
- Identify the winding type. Check the watch’s model documentation or maker’s website to confirm whether it is manual-wind or automatic. Instructions and power reserve vary by model.
- Use the maker’s restart method. For a stopped automatic, Patek Philippe says a few gentle turns of the crown can start its self-winding watches. Grand Seiko recommends winding the mainspring or swinging the watch a few times. Follow the instructions for your specific model rather than assuming one brand’s method applies to another.
- Wind carefully. If the watch is hand-wound, stop at the resistance point specified by its maker. Jaeger-LeCoultre warns that winding its watches beyond resistance may cause the motor spring to snap; Breguet warns that forcing the crown can damage the gear train. These are model-specific cautions, but the safe general rule is not to force a crown. See Jaeger-LeCoultre’s maintenance guidance and Breguet’s watch-care guidance.
- Observe how long it runs. Compare the result with the reserve stated for your exact model. Patek Philippe gives 38–48 hours for its self-winding movements, with exceptions for specific models; that figure is not a universal reserve for mechanical watches. Possible causes and the right response

When to seek service
Arrange an inspection if the watch does not restart using its maker’s method, stops again despite correct winding, has a sudden timing change after magnetic exposure, or behaves abnormally after a drop or impact. Manufacturers direct owners with unresolved problems to retailer or service-center channels; remote troubleshooting cannot establish which internal component, if any, has failed.

Service timing is also model-specific. Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its quartz and mechanical watches. Grand Seiko’s cited troubleshooting guidance says to consult the retailer if inspection, adjustment, and overhaul cleaning have not been performed for more than three years. These are different manufacturers’ recommendations in different contexts, not a universal interval. Check the guidance for your watch and its service history.

Is a watch winder necessary?
A winder can keep an automatic watch moving when it is not worn regularly, but it is a convenience rather than a fix for a watch that stops despite proper winding. Breguet discusses using a winder for automatic models and rewinding an automatic that is not worn every day. Follow the individual watch’s manual; a winder cannot repair a worn mainspring, lubrication problem, magnetism, or impact damage.
