How to Choose an Automatic Watch for Your Wrist Size and Daily Routine

The right automatic watch depends on its full case footprint, your wearing schedule and the activities it must handle—not diameter alone.

Choose an automatic watch by comparing its full case footprint with your wrist, then matching its power reserve, water resistance, comfort and upkeep to how you actually wear it. Diameter alone is not enough: lug-to-lug length, thickness and the shape of the lugs all affect fit. Try a watch on when possible, because comfort and preferred visual presence are personal.

How to assess fit beyond case diameter

Start with the watch’s case diameter, lug-to-lug span (the distance from the tip of one lug to the other along the 12-to-6 axis), thickness and case shape. Lug curvature matters too: lugs that turn down can sit differently from straight lugs, even when the watches share a similar diameter.

Use a soft tape to measure wrist circumference for general orientation. Then measure the flat width across the top of your wrist where the watch will sit, and compare it with the watch’s lug-to-lug span. If the lugs extend beyond that flat area, the watch may feel or look too large for your preference. A sizing chart can offer a starting point, not a rule. Watchuseek’s sizing guide explains the value of considering lug span alongside diameter.

Manufacturer dimensions make useful comparisons, but check what each listing calls “length” or “width” rather than assuming every brand measures the same way. For example, Tissot lists its PR516, model T1494071605100, at 38 mm case width, 37 mm case length and 11.18 mm thickness. Its Seastar 1000 40 mm, model T1208071105100, is listed at 40 mm wide and long and 12.48 mm thick. These are published manufacturer specifications, not independent fit tests. Tissot PR516 specifications; Tissot Seastar 1000 specifications.

How power reserve fits your wearing routine

An automatic watch uses wrist movement to drive an oscillating weight that winds the mainspring; it does not need a battery. Its power reserve is how long it can continue running after it is fully wound and then left unworn. Tissot’s mechanical-watch manual gives a model-dependent range of 36 to 80 hours for its automatic watches; the manual’s publication date is not stated in the retrieved document. Check the exact model’s stated reserve rather than treating that range as universal. Tissot Analogue Mechanical Watches User’s Manual.

If you wear the same watch most days, reserve may matter less than it does when you rotate between watches. A shorter reserve means a watch can stop sooner while unworn; a longer one gives you more time before winding and resetting it. Both cited Tissot examples list up to 80 hours of reserve. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent performance result.

How to match water resistance to what you do

Use the specific watch’s case-back marking and instructions to judge its intended water use. Seiko’s published guidance classifies 3 BAR for accidental splashes and rain; 5 BAR for swimming, yachting and showering; and 10, 15 and 20 BAR for those activities plus bathing and shallow diving. Seiko lists its diver’s-watch categories for scuba or saturation diving. These classifications describe intended use; a pressure rating should not be treated as a universal guarantee of safe use at a particular real-world depth. Seiko’s water-resistance guidance.

The Seastar 1000 cited above is listed at 30 bar (300 m / 1000 ft) and has a screw-down crown. That specification does not replace the model’s instructions or establish a depth guarantee for every situation. Water resistance can also degrade: Seiko says aging gaskets or shock can affect it, and that water resistance is not permanently guaranteed. Seiko water-resistance FAQ; Seiko watch-care guidance.

Care around water

  • Do not put a water-resistant watch in water while its crown is pulled out, and do not operate the crown when the watch is wet.
  • After seawater exposure, rinse the watch with fresh water and dry it. Seiko advises washing it in still water rather than directly under a running faucet.
  • Arrange regular water-resistance checks, especially if you rely on the watch around water.

What else matters for everyday comfort

Consider how the watch will feel and function through your actual day, not just how it looks in a product photo.

  • Thickness and cuffs: A thicker case may catch on shirt cuffs. Check how it sits beneath the sleeves you wear most.
  • Weight and materials: Case and bracelet materials affect all-day comfort. Try the watch on if possible, since a specification alone cannot tell you whether its weight will feel right.
  • Legibility: Think about whether the dial is easy to read in the lighting and situations where you expect to use it.
  • Strap or bracelet: Check comfort, adjustability and attachment type. The PR516 listing describes an interchangeable quick-release bracelet and adjustable leather strap; the Seastar listing describes an interchangeable bracelet. Both examples list a 20 mm lug width, but that measurement alone does not establish compatibility with every replacement strap. Verify the attachment system and the exact watch variant before buying.
  • Setting and winding: If you rotate watches, consider whether you are willing to wind and reset one after it stops.

Mechanical-watch accuracy can vary with the movement and the wearer’s habits. Tissot’s manual says accuracy depends on the movements and habits of the person wearing the watch; it does not support a universal accuracy promise. Tissot Analogue Mechanical Watches User’s Manual.

A practical way to compare shortlisted watches

Compare the models on the same factors, in an order that starts with fit and ends with daily usability:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fit: Compare lug-to-lug span with the flat width of your wrist, then consider diameter, thickness, case shape and lug curvature.
  2. Wear pattern: Match the stated power reserve to how often you wear the watch and whether you rotate it with others.
  3. Water exposure: Match the watch’s marking and instructions to your actual activities, rather than assuming all water-resistant watches suit the same use.
  4. Comfort: Consider weight, materials, cuff clearance and how the watch feels on your wrist.
  5. Strap fit: Verify the lug width, attachment system and adjustability for the exact watch before choosing a replacement strap or bracelet.

The two Tissot examples show why several dimensions matter: the PR516 is listed as narrower and thinner than the Seastar 1000, while the Seastar has the higher published water-resistance rating. Both list up to 80 hours of power reserve and a 20 mm lug width. Their specifications illustrate trade-offs; they do not establish which watch will fit or suit a particular wearer.
