Choose the Legacy Machine 1 EVO if you expect to wear the watch often, travel with it, or encounter changing conditions. Its 42 mm case, 80 m water resistance, screw-down crowns, FlexRing shock protection, 60-hour reserve and interchangeable rubber strap make it the more practical daily option. Choose an original Legacy Machine 1 variant if the first-generation design, the signature vertical power-reserve display, a discontinued material or edition, and the character of the 2011 launch model matter more than those protections and conveniences.
Both watches remain manually wound, mechanically complex and visually three-dimensional. The right choice is therefore less about which movement is “better” and more about which version fits your wrist, your wearing habits and your reason for collecting an MB&F Legacy Machine.

The short answer: EVO for use, original LM1 for first-generation character
The EVO is the rational choice for regular wear. At 42 mm in diameter and 16.8 mm thick, it is smaller than the 44 x 16 mm original case, yet it adds an 80 m water-resistance rating, screw-down crowns, a patented FlexRing shock-protection system and a quick-change rubber strap. Its 60-hour power reserve also gives you a wider margin between winding sessions.

It is the model introduced in 2011, with the distinctive vertical power-reserve indicator and the original execution of MB&F’s floating 14 mm balance wheel. The family includes 18k red gold, 18k white gold, platinum, titanium and stainless-steel versions, so collectors can pursue material and edition combinations no longer represented by the current EVO range.

Neither answer is universally correct. The EVO changes some of the original’s visual language in order to improve resilience and convenience; the original preserves the design that established the Legacy Machine 1.
What the two watches share
Two independently set time displays
Both versions show two separate hour-and-minute indications. Each display can be set independently, allowing two time zones to be read at once. The EVO specification explicitly allows non-whole-hour offsets, useful for locations that differ by 30 or 45 minutes rather than an exact hour. The original is described as having completely independent dual time zones.
A manually wound, suspended-balance architecture
Both watches use manual-winding movements and a 14 mm flying balance wheel suspended above the movement. Winding is therefore part of ownership: the crown must be turned by hand rather than relying on a rotor or an automatic watch winder. The elevated balance and the movement’s hand-finished, three-dimensional construction are central to the LM1 experience, not hidden technical details.
Large visual presence
Case diameter alone does not describe how either watch wears. The domed architecture, raised balance and twin time displays create substantial visual height. The EVO’s 52 mm lug-to-lug measurement is published; the original’s lug-to-lug figure is not included in the available specifications. Try the watch on your wrist whenever possible, paying attention to lug overhang and how the tall case sits when your wrist bends.

Daily wear: why the EVO is the safer choice
Protection against shocks
The EVO incorporates MB&F’s patented FlexRing shock-protection system. That feature is relevant if the watch will be worn while commuting, travelling, moving between meetings or doing ordinary activities where accidental knocks are possible. It does not make the watch indestructible, and the movement still deserves careful treatment, but it is a meaningful distinction from choosing an original primarily for its traditional case execution.
Water resistance and crowns
An 80 m rating and screw-down crowns give the EVO a clearly specified margin for everyday exposure to rain, hand washing and similar situations. Water resistance is not a promise that a complex mechanical watch should be used for swimming without observing MB&F’s instructions, and seals age over time. The important buying distinction is that the EVO has a published rating and crown design aimed at more varied wear; the cited original specifications do not provide a comparable rating.
Strap changes without a workshop
The EVO’s rubber strap can be changed through its quick-change system, and the folding buckle is matched to the case material. That is useful when you want a more secure, practical setup for travel or a different appearance at home. Confirm strap compatibility and stock with an authorized MB&F retailer or service center before purchasing a spare; availability can differ by edition.

More time between winding sessions
With a 60-hour reserve, the EVO can be removed on Friday evening and still have a realistic chance of running through Monday morning, depending on when it was fully wound. The original’s 45-hour reserve is shorter, so a weekend off the wrist is more likely to require a reset and winding session. Neither watch is automatic, so reserve length changes the rhythm of ownership rather than eliminating winding.

Why collectors still choose an original LM1
The vertical power-reserve indicator
The original LM1’s vertical power-reserve display is one of its defining signatures. The EVO replaces it with an inclined indicator. This is not merely a change in typography or finishing: the reserve display occupies a different visual position and changes the way the watch’s mechanical “machine” reads from across the room. If that upright indicator is the feature that made you notice the LM1 in the first place, an original is the direct route to it.
First-generation provenance
MB&F launched the original Legacy Machine 1 in 2011. MB&F also says it received the 2012 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Public Prize and Best Men’s Watch Prize. Those dates give the original a place in the company’s early history that a current EVO cannot replicate. Collectors who value origin stories, launch-era design and discontinued executions may accept the original’s shorter reserve and more traditional protection in exchange for that provenance.
Broader material history
Original LM1 variants were made in 18k red gold, 18k white gold, platinum, titanium and stainless steel. The current EVO specification covers Grade 5 titanium and 5N+ rose gold. That makes the original family the more versatile hunting ground if your collection is organized around case material, rarity or a particular discontinued edition.

The current rose-gold EVO with green dial plate is limited to 33 pieces. It is therefore a defined modern edition rather than a general-production option. An original LM1 collector may instead prioritize a historical metal or a particular first-generation configuration. Compare the exact reference, case metal, dial treatment and documentation for the individual watch rather than assuming every LM1 carries the same scarcity or value.
Fit: deciding between 42 mm and 44 mm
What the numbers suggest
The EVO’s 42 mm diameter is 2 mm smaller than the original’s 44 mm diameter. Its published 52 mm lug-to-lug measurement helps explain how it spans the wrist, while its 16.8 mm height is 0.8 mm taller than the original’s stated 16 mm. In other words, the EVO reduces the footprint but does not become a thin watch; the three-dimensional construction remains prominent.
How to test your wrist properly
- Measure your wrist circumference with a flexible tape or a strip of paper, then note where the case will sit rather than treating circumference as a pass/fail rule.
- Try the watch with the strap adjusted to normal daily tension. A loose strap can make a tall case rock, while an overly tight strap can exaggerate pressure at the lugs.
- Check the side profile while your wrist is straight and while it bends. The key issue is whether the case stays centered without the lugs extending beyond the wrist.
- View the watch from above and at an angle. The balance, domed elements and twin displays create visual width that a ruler measurement cannot capture.
- Wear it for several minutes and move your hand. Comfort around the crown and the point where the case meets the wrist matters more than a generic “small wrist” label.
The EVO is the logical first try for someone who finds 44 mm watches overwhelming, but the 52 mm lug-to-lug dimension and 16.8 mm height still demand tolerance for a substantial object. Conversely, a wearer accustomed to large, sculptural watches may prefer the original’s 44 mm presence. Because the original lug-to-lug measurement is not specified here, an in-person fitting is especially important when buying that version.

Winding the watch
MB&F’s operating manual describes the watch as equipped with a manual-winding movement. Wind from the crown according to the manual’s instructions, stop when the movement is fully wound, and do not force the crown. Establish a consistent routine—such as winding at the same time each morning—so that the reserve is not accidentally exhausted. If the watch stops, the restart process includes setting the two time displays, which is more involved than simply correcting a single hand.
Reserve differences in practice
The EVO’s 60 hours and the original’s 45 hours are published movement specifications, not guarantees of identical real-world running time in every condition. They nevertheless establish a clear ownership difference: the EVO tolerates a longer pause between wear periods. A collector who rotates several watches may appreciate that extra 15 hours; someone who wears the LM1 continuously may care less and instead choose the display that feels most authentic.

Mechanical complexity and service planning
The EVO contains 270 components and 25 jewels; the original lists 279 components and 23 jewels. Component and jewel counts do not predict accuracy or service cost by themselves, but they underline why qualified service matters. Use an authorized MB&F service center or a watchmaker specifically experienced with this movement architecture. Ask for the recommended inspection and service schedule for the exact reference, because no single current interval or price is established here.
Materials, weight and visual intent
Choosing EVO titanium
Grade 5 titanium is the EVO option for a technical, contemporary presentation. It is paired with a rhodium dial plate in the current specification. Choose it when you want the EVO’s protection and smaller diameter without the visual warmth of rose gold.
Choosing EVO 5N+ rose gold
The 5N+ rose-gold EVO uses a green dial plate and is limited to 33 pieces. Its precious-metal case changes the visual emphasis from instrument-like titanium to a more luxurious, high-contrast object while retaining the EVO architecture, reserve display and protection features.

Choosing an original precious-metal or steel variant
The original range’s 18k red gold, 18k white gold, platinum, titanium and stainless-steel options allow a collector to prioritize warmth, neutrality, heft or rarity. Do not assume that a metal choice alone determines collectability; condition, completeness, edition identity and documented provenance also matter when evaluating a specific pre-owned example.
Which version suits each buyer?
Choose the LM1 EVO when
- You plan to wear the watch frequently rather than keep it mainly as a display piece.
- You want a published 80 m water-resistance rating, screw-down crowns and FlexRing shock protection.
- You prefer a 42 mm case and a 52 mm lug-to-lug measurement, while accepting 16.8 mm of height.
- You value a 60-hour reserve and the ability to show non-whole-hour time-zone offsets.
- You want a quick-change rubber strap and matching folding buckle.
- You are attracted to the current titanium or 33-piece rose-gold edition.
Choose an original LM1 variant when
- The vertical power-reserve indicator is essential to the watch’s identity for you.
- You want the model that launched in 2011 and carries MB&F’s cited 2012 GPHG recognition.
- You are collecting a historical case material such as platinum, stainless steel, 18k white gold or 18k red gold.
- You prefer the original’s 44 x 16 mm proportions and first-generation visual character.
- You accept a 45-hour reserve and a more traditional case specification in return for that design fidelity.
Buying and ownership checks
Verify the exact reference
“LM1” covers multiple materials and editions. Before committing, record the reference, case metal, dial plate, movement condition, strap and buckle configuration, and the contents of the set. For the current rose-gold EVO, confirm that the seller’s description matches the 33-piece limitation.
Get a current price and service quote
Prices, availability and service charges change by edition and market. Obtain a current written quotation from an authorized retailer or MB&F service center rather than relying on an old listing or a generic estimate. The same source can confirm whether replacement rubber straps, folding buckles and movement service are available for the specific watch.
Store it safely
A dedicated luxury-watch presentation or storage case is a sensible accessory for either model, particularly because the exposed, sculptural movement should not be allowed to rattle against loose objects. An automatic winder is not necessary: both the original and EVO are manually wound.

Final decision framework
Start with use, then confirm fit and finish. If the watch will be exposed to varied daily conditions, the EVO’s protection, 80 m rating, smaller diameter, strap system and 60-hour reserve outweigh its altered reserve display. If your priority is owning the exact visual language that defined the Legacy Machine 1 at launch, including the vertical indicator and a discontinued material, the original is the more coherent purchase.
When both choices appeal equally, try them side by side on the wrist and decide which display you would miss more: the EVO’s inclined reserve and practical hardware, or the original’s upright reserve and first-generation architecture. That single preference usually resolves the comparison more reliably than specifications alone.
