A useful collection has distinct roles, but there is no required dress-watch, sport-watch and everyday-watch formula. Your third watch should suit a real use case, fit comfortably, and appeal to you enough to wear.
Start with the watches you already own
Write down when you wear each watch, what you like about it, and what makes you leave it at home. Include practical details such as water resistance, legibility, comfort and how it works with your usual clothes. Then look for the gap rather than shopping for a third watch in isolation.

- Use: What situation do neither of your watches handle well?
- Overlap: Would the candidate have a meaningfully different function, wearing character or role—not just another dial color or logo?
- Fit: Does it sit comfortably on your wrist and work with the clothes you actually wear?
- Ownership: Does the price leave room for likely servicing and other costs of ownership?
- Appeal: Do you want to wear it for its own sake, even if it is not the most practical option?
Collection guides offer possible role frameworks, not rules. Choose a role that matches your routine
Formal or slim watch
Consider this if you regularly dress up and your current watches feel too sporty, thick or casual. If formal occasions are rare, a dedicated dress watch may see little wrist time; a versatile watch that works with both casual and smarter clothes could be a better gap to fill.

Daily or bridge watch
A bridge watch works across more of your week, pairing a useful level of durability and legibility with a look that suits your wardrobe. It is most valuable when your current watches are specialized at opposite ends—for example, one formal and one rugged—rather than when you already own a comfortable all-rounder.
Sport, field or dive watch
A sport or field watch can make sense if you want a robust, easy-to-read option for active use. A dive watch may be chosen for its style, but wearing one casually is different from relying on it for scuba diving. For actual diving, DiveWatch’s buyer guidance recommends checking ISO 6425 certification, at least 200 metres of water resistance, a usable unidirectional bezel and suitability over a wetsuit. Those are editorial recommendations for diving, not requirements for every watch with dive styling.

Travel watch or complication
A GMT or another travel-oriented complication may fill a genuine gap if you frequently cross time zones or need to track another time zone. If you will not use the function, do not treat the added complication as an automatic upgrade over a simpler watch you prefer wearing.
Personally meaningful watch
The third watch does not have to solve a practical problem. A piece tied to a milestone, person, place or design you love can earn its place through personal meaning. A collection is for its owner, not a checklist.

Check fit and comfort before deciding
Case diameter alone cannot tell you whether a watch will wear well. Lug-to-lug length, thickness and lug width also affect how it sits and feels. If possible, try a candidate on your wrist; check that it stays comfortable through ordinary movement and works with sleeves you commonly wear. Published dimensions are useful for narrowing options, but they cannot fully substitute for trying a watch on.

Compare each candidate against your actual gap, the two watches’ roles, wrist comfort, wardrobe, expected wear, budget and ownership needs. A higher resale value does not by itself make a watch the better choice. Nor does completing a conventional three-part set matter if one of those roles has no place in your life.

Without knowing your two watches, budget, wrist fit and typical use, there is no sound basis for naming one specific model. A better starting point is to describe what you own and what you want the third watch to do; then narrow the search to watches that fill that role and feel right on your wrist.
