Åre is a mountain destination in summer as well as a ski town in winter. Hiking, cycling and trail running are major draws, but you can also plan days around swimming, paddling, fishing, climbing, food or wellness. The best dates and activities depend on snowmelt, lift schedules and the weather—especially if your plans rely on high trails or mountain lifts.
Choose your travel month around the kind of trip you want
Åre’s summer changes over the season. These are typical patterns described by the destination guide, not guarantees of weather or trail conditions. Check current local information before fixing plans around a particular activity.

Pick activities to match your terrain, effort and weather tolerance
Hiking, from village trails to Åreskutan
Åre has routes at different elevations, including lower forest trails and outings around Åreskutan. Use Åre Trails to filter by activity, difficulty, distance or estimated time, then confirm that your chosen trail is open. High routes can remain affected by snow in June, and openings may progress as snow melts.

Cycling and lift access
Options include downhill and trail cycling, with easier tracks and pump tracks in Björnen. The 2026 destination schedule lists Åre Trail Park Björnen for June 5–September 27; this is a published operating period, not a guarantee that every feature will be available on every day. The schedule also specifies which lifts operate in particular periods and notes limits on bike carriage. Check the 2026 lift and trail schedule before planning around a lift.
Family-friendly days
Families can consider easier cycling tracks in Björnen, pump tracks, shorter hikes, the funicular or cable car, swimming and beaches. Holiday Club also has indoor pool and sauna facilities. Ask the relevant provider about age or height rules, access and operating details before setting out.

Water, adventure and slower-paced options
The destination guide lists canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, white-water activities, paragliding, climbing and ziplining. Season, weather limits, safety requirements and booking arrangements vary; confirm them with the provider. For a less activity-heavy day, the guide also points to food, wellness, sauna, spa, lake beaches and time in the village. These are local offerings, not independently assessed quality rankings.

Åre’s summer update mentions Midsummer celebrations, music, boat tours on Lake Åre, workshops and a gourmet hike. These are examples of date-specific programming, not a promise that an event will run during your visit. Check the current summer calendar for dates and availability.

Understand lift dates and early-summer trail conditions
Lift and trail access is seasonal, with the official 2026 schedule covering operating periods from early June into late September. Hours and openings can change with weather. A listed season does not mean every lift or trail runs every day, so check the schedule close to your visit and again when conditions matter.
In June, do not assume a high route is ready just because lower trails are open. Check trail status and be willing to choose a lower route or a village-based activity if snow or weather makes your original plan unsuitable. A walk from the village avoids depending on lift operations; a lift-assisted day requires checking the relevant lift’s dates, hours and bike rules.

Pack for fast-changing mountain weather
Åre’s visitor guidance warns that mountain weather can change quickly. For hikes, bring waterproof clothing and a warm spare layer such as gloves and a hat, along with food, water and a phone. Mobile coverage is not guaranteed. Hiking boots are recommended in the local guidance; equipment rental is also available for visitors who arrive without needed gear.

Check the forecast before leaving. For a longer hike, tell someone your route, departure time and expected return. Keep a more sheltered or village-based alternative in mind if conditions turn.

Follow local trail and outdoor-access responsibilities
Åre summarizes the Swedish Right of Public Access as “Don’t disturb, don’t destroy.” Its visitor guidance advises hikers to:
- Stay on official trails and use footbridges when the ground is wet.
- Keep away from wildlife and grazing reindeer.
- Take rubbish home and check restrictions in protected areas.
- Follow local fire rules.
- Keep dogs leashed from March 1 through August 20, and near grazing animals or in protected areas.
Check the local access guidance and any signs or protected-area rules for the place you plan to visit.
Plan the train journey with current operator timetables
For summer 2026, Åre’s travel guide says Snälltåget night train departures from Stockholm and Malmö begin June 24, with no summer departure from Gothenburg. It also describes regional Norrtåg service via Sundsvall, with stops including Östersund, Järpen and Duved. These are time-sensitive route descriptions: confirm travel days, connections, tickets and schedules with the operators before booking. See Åre’s travel guide for the local overview.

Decide first whether your trip depends on high trails, cycling lifts or a specific event. Then check dates and current openings. If your preferred outing is exposed, snow-affected or lift-dependent, keep a lower trail, swim, village visit or indoor wellness option available as a backup. That flexibility matters most in early summer and on days when mountain weather changes quickly.
