How to Fix a Pixel Watch With the “Black Screen of Death”

A Pixel Watch black screen is not one confirmed defect. Charge it correctly, force-restart it, reserve factory reset for startup and pairing failures, and seek support when the symptoms suggest hardware damage.

Put the Pixel Watch on its correct, model-compatible charger for 5–15 minutes, then hold the crown and side button together for about 35 seconds. Release when the Google “G” logo appears. This is a forced restart, not a factory reset, so it should not erase the watch.

The phrase “black screen of death” is not an official Google diagnosis. A blank Pixel Watch may be completely out of power, failing to charge, frozen, stuck during startup, or suffering a display or internal hardware failure. Work through the non-destructive checks first.

Identify what kind of black-screen problem you have

Before resetting anything, determine whether the watch is still running or appears completely unpowered. These clues are useful but not definitive:

The watch shows a charging symbol or eventually displays the “G” logo Check charger alignment and leave it charging, then try a normal or forced restart.
The screen is black, but the watch vibrates, makes sounds, or responds to notifications Try a forced restart. If the watch remains responsive while the display stays black, a display or internal hardware fault is plausible.
There is no logo, vibration, or other response Verify the charger and outlet, charge for 5–15 minutes, then force-restart it while charging.
The Google “G” logo appears but startup never completes Try one forced restart. If it repeatedly hangs at the logo, consider a factory reset.
The watch was dropped, cracked, exposed to liquid, becomes unusually hot, or smells unusual Stop DIY troubleshooting and contact Google support or an authorized service option.

The Google Pixel Watch app or Google Health app may still show the watch as connected. That makes a display-side problem more likely, but it does not prove that the display is the only failed component.

Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

Step 1: Charge the Pixel Watch correctly

A fully depleted watch can look exactly like a dead watch. Use the charger designed for your specific Pixel Watch generation rather than assuming that any magnetic or wireless charger will work.

  1. Place the watch carefully on its compatible magnetic charger and make sure the contacts are aligned.
  2. Inspect the charger and the watch contacts for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or visible damage.
  3. Try a different wall outlet and a compatible power adapter.
  4. Leave the watch charging for at least 5–15 minutes before trying to turn it on. Google says a white “G” icon should appear after this period when the watch has charged sufficiently. See Google’s charging guidance.

Do not force the watch onto the cable. Do not use a generic phone wireless charger or Qi pad as a substitute: Pixel Watch charging is model-specific. Google’s first-generation USB-C magnetic cable is listed for the original Google Pixel Watch, while the Mous charger sold through the Google Store is specifically listed as compatible with Pixel Watch 4. Check the accessory page for your model before buying a replacement: Google Pixel Watch USB-C Magnetic Charging Cable and Mous Pixel Watch Charger.

Never insert a paper clip, pin, or other object into the microphone opening or charging pins. Google warns that doing so can damage the watch.

Step 2: Try a normal restart

If the display and touch controls respond, use the ordinary restart option:

  1. Press and hold the crown for approximately three seconds.
  2. Scroll down through the power menu.
  3. Tap Restart.

This method is appropriate for a watch that is sluggish or behaving abnormally but still accepts input. It is not useful if the screen is completely frozen or blank.

Step 3: Force-restart a frozen or blank Pixel Watch

For a frozen screen or an apparently unresponsive watch, perform Google’s forced-restart procedure:

  1. Press and hold the crown and side button simultaneously.
  2. Keep holding for about 35 seconds. Google notes that it may take longer.
  3. Release the buttons when the Google “G” logo appears.
  4. Wait for the reboot to finish. Do not repeatedly interrupt the startup process.

Google refers to this procedure as a hard reset in its troubleshooting flow, but it is a forced restart: it is not the same as wiping the watch. The Pixel Watch does not have a separate physical reset button. The official instructions are available on Google’s Pixel Watch troubleshooting page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Repeat the forced restart while charging

If the watch remains completely blank, leave it seated on its compatible charger and repeat the crown-and-side-button procedure while it is charging. This is worth trying when the first attempt may have occurred before the battery had recovered enough to boot.

If there is still no logo, vibration, charging response, or other sign of life after checking a known-good compatible charging setup, stop repeating the button combination indefinitely. A failed battery, charging circuit, mainboard, or display cannot be repaired by holding the buttons longer.

Step 5: Fix a Pixel Watch stuck on the “G” logo

A watch that repeatedly returns to the Google logo may have a software or startup problem, although the logo alone does not establish a single cause. Google lists a factory reset as an option for a watch frozen at the logo, for pairing problems, forgotten PINs, and “Something went wrong” errors.

Warning: A factory reset erases apps, settings, and data stored on the watch. You will need to set it up again, and Google says pairing may require the most recent PIN or the Google Account credentials associated with the watch.

Reset from the watch

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Disconnect & reset.
  3. Confirm with OK.

Reset from the phone

  1. Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Select Reset and unpair watch.

Labels can differ by watch generation, region, phone, or app version. Look for the equivalent disconnect, reset, or unpair option if the wording is different.

Advanced option: Fastboot and recovery reset

Use this only as a last resort when the watch will not reset normally and you accept permanent local data loss. The procedure is model-sensitive, so verify the current Google instructions before proceeding.

  1. Hold the crown and side button for approximately 20 seconds until the “G” logo appears. On Pixel Watch 3, the logo may be colorful.
  2. Immediately tap the upper-left and lower-right edges of the display at the same time to enter Fastboot.
  3. Press the side button to scroll to Recovery Mode.
  4. Press the crown.
  5. When No Command appears, hold the crown and swipe up at the same time.
  6. Swipe down to Wipe Data or Factory Reset.
  7. Swipe right to confirm.
  8. After the wipe completes, select Reboot system now.

This does not bypass anti-theft protection. After the reset, the owner must sign in with the most recent PIN or Google Account credentials when pairing the watch again. For the authoritative sequence, use Google’s support instructions.

What if the screen is black but the watch is charging?

Do not factory-reset it immediately. First:

  1. Try waking the watch with the crown or side button.
  2. Perform the forced restart.
  3. Check whether the phone can still communicate with the watch.
  4. Note whether it vibrates, makes sounds, receives notifications, or becomes warm on the charger.

If the watch responds in these ways while the display remains black, a display failure or another internal hardware fault is plausible. Phone connectivity and vibration are clues, not conclusive tests. Avoid opening the watch; contact Google support, particularly if it is under warranty or covered by protection.

  • The watch was dropped, cracked, or exposed to liquid.
  • The display flickers, shows lines, or stays black while the watch otherwise responds.
  • The watch becomes unusually hot while charging.
  • The watch is swollen, smells unusual, or the charger or contacts are damaged.

Repair, warranty, or replacement

Use Google’s repair center to check eligibility and available service in your region. Google says cost and availability depend on the issue, warranty status, and whether walk-in or mail-in service is offered. Repair options should not be generalized across Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4.

If your watch is out of warranty, compare the official repair or replacement quote with the cost of a new or refurbished watch. A replacement charger is sensible only when the existing cable is clearly the problem and compatibility is confirmed. Do not assume that a screen replacement is inexpensive or universally available.

Preventing another charging-related failure

  • Use the charger specified for your Pixel Watch generation.
  • Keep the charging contacts clean and dry.
  • Check magnetic alignment whenever the watch appears not to charge.
  • Do not insert objects into the charging pins or microphone opening.
  • Protect the watch from drops and follow Google’s model-specific liquid-exposure guidance.

These steps can reduce avoidable charging and physical-damage problems, but they cannot prevent every software or hardware failure.

Quick decision guide

No logo, no vibration: verify the compatible charger, charge for 5–15 minutes, then force-restart while charging. If nothing changes, contact support.

Logo appears but startup never finishes: try one forced restart, then use a factory reset if the watch remains stuck and you accept data loss. Use Fastboot recovery only if the ordinary reset is unavailable.

Phone still sees the watch but the display is black: treat a display or internal hardware problem as plausible and arrange support, especially if the watch is covered.

Physical or liquid damage, heat, swelling, or unusual odor: stop charging and stop DIY troubleshooting.
