Open the Workout app, choose Outdoor Cycle for an outdoor ride or Indoor Cycle for a stationary bike, then tap Start. When you finish, swipe right, tap End, and review the ride in the Fitness app on your iPhone.
The steps below apply to the current watchOS 26 cycling workout interface. Outdoor Cycle records route and GPS-based information; Indoor Cycle is intended for spin classes, exercise bikes, and indoor trainers.

Before you start
- Wear the watch securely enough to maintain consistent skin contact, without making it uncomfortable.
- For an outdoor route, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Apple Watch Workout > While Using the App. The same permission can be checked on iPhone under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Apple Watch Workout.
- Pair compatible cycling accessories before riding if you want cadence, speed-sensor, or power data.
- Charge the watch before a long ride. Battery performance varies by Apple Watch model and workout conditions.
Location permission affects route recording, but a workout can still be saved even if the route is incomplete or missing.

How to record an outdoor cycling workout
- Open the Workout app on Apple Watch.
- Turn the Digital Crown until you reach Outdoor Cycle.
- Tap Start.
- Wait briefly for the workout and location data to initialize, then begin riding.
During the ride, turn the Digital Crown to move through the available workout views. The standard cycling information can include elapsed time, heart rate, average speed, elevation gained, and distance. These values are estimates and can be affected by GPS reception, watch fit, terrain, and sensor configuration.

How to record an indoor cycling workout
- Open Workout.
- Select Indoor Cycle.
- Tap Start.
- Begin pedaling.
Use Indoor Cycle for a stationary bike, spin class, or indoor training session. It should not be treated as a GPS route workout. A compatible indoor bike or Bluetooth sensor may supply additional information such as cadence, speed, or power.
Pause and resume a ride
You can pause manually in either of two ways:
- Press the side button and Digital Crown simultaneously.
- Swipe right on the workout screen and tap Pause.
Tap Resume when you are ready to continue. The physical-button method is useful with gloves or when you want to avoid accidental screen taps.
Turn on automatic pause
Auto-Pause can pause and resume an outdoor cycling workout when you stop, such as at a crossing:
Settings > Workout > Auto-Pause
Automatic detection is not infallible. Turn it off if you frequently ride intervals, stop and start unpredictably, or want every pause to be controlled manually. Auto-Pause can also make elapsed and moving-time totals differ from those on another cycling app or computer.
End and save the workout
- Swipe right on the active workout screen.
- Tap End.
- Turn the Digital Crown to review the summary.
- Rate your effort if Apple Watch prompts you.
- Tap End at the top of the summary.
Stopping the bicycle does not necessarily end the workout. Explicitly ending it prevents the watch from continuing to record while you pack up, travel home, or forget about the session.

Find the ride on your iPhone
- Open Fitness on iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Sessions.
- Tap the cycling workout.
- Tap Show More beside sections such as heart rate or route when available.
The summary may include the route, splits, heart-rate information, effort, elevation, and other workout details. Availability depends on the workout type, permissions, sensors, and Apple Watch model.
Customize the cycling metrics
Apple Watch provides cycling views for speed, distance, elevation, heart rate, heart-rate zones, segments, splits, power, power zones, cadence, and Activity rings. You can turn views on or off and arrange the information you are most likely to use; exact controls can vary with watchOS and workout type.

- Casual rides: elapsed time, distance, current speed, average speed, and heart rate.
- Fitness rides: heart-rate zones, distance, speed, and elevation.
- Climbing or route-focused rides: elevation and segments.
- Power-based training: power, cadence, and power zones, provided compatible equipment is connected.
Keeping fewer views active makes important information easier to reach while riding and reduces screen interaction.
Use heart-rate zones
Heart-rate zones divide effort into five bands. During a cycling workout, the zone view can show your current zone, time in that zone, and average heart rate.
To view or edit the zones on Apple Watch, go to Settings > Workout > Heart Rate Zones. You can also use Apple Watch app on iPhone > My Watch > Workout > Heart Rate Zones. Automatic zones use health information, and Apple says your date of birth is required for automatic calculation.

Wrist-based heart-rate readings can vary with fit, skin contact, temperature, sweat, motion, and cycling position. Treat them as workout-tracking data rather than medical measurements, and avoid basing an important training or health decision on one reading.
Connect cadence, speed, and power sensors
Apple Watch does not produce true cycling power from the watch alone. Power and cadence generally require compatible Bluetooth cycling equipment.
To connect an accessory:
- Open Settings on Apple Watch.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Under Health Devices, select the sensor.
- Use the information button, where available, to configure details such as wheel size or crank length.
The equipment determines what can be recorded:
- Cadence sensor: pedal revolutions.
- Speed sensor: wheel-speed information, which can be useful indoors or when GPS is unreliable.
- Power meter: cycling power in watts.
- Smart trainer or compatible indoor bike: potentially speed, cadence, power, and other equipment-dependent data.
Compatibility depends on the accessory, Apple Watch model, and watchOS. Apple describes these as compatible Bluetooth accessories rather than guaranteeing support for every sensor.
Set up Power Zones
Power Zones use an FTP value—functional threshold power—to divide cycling effort into training zones. They require compatible power-capable Bluetooth equipment.
On Apple Watch, go to Settings > Workout > Cycling Power > Custom. Enter your FTP, choose the number of zones, and set lower and upper limits where required. The equivalent iPhone path is Apple Watch app > My Watch > Workout > Cycling Power.

Power Zones require date of birth, height, and weight in the Fitness app. FTP is a training estimate, not a universal or medically precise measure of fitness, so use a defensible value rather than treating automatically generated zones as authoritative.
See cycling metrics on your iPhone
When a cycling workout begins, Apple says it can appear as a Live Activity on the iPhone. Tap the workout timer on the iPhone Lock Screen to view cycling metrics on the larger display.
Mount the phone securely and do not hold it while cycling. This display is an extension of the active Apple Watch workout, not a separate iPhone-only recording. To stop viewing the metrics without necessarily ending the workout, swipe right on Apple Watch and tap Stop as described in Apple’s cycling guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Pacer and Race Route
For an outdoor cycling target, select Outdoor Cycle > Goals > Pacer > Add. Set a distance and target time, then tap Done. The watch compares your current performance with the target pace.
Apple also documents Race Route for a route repeated with little or no deviation at least twice. Availability and behavior can depend on the watchOS version and the route data Apple Watch has recorded.

Troubleshooting missing or incorrect data
The workout does not appear in Fitness
- Confirm that you tapped End, rather than leaving the workout paused.
- Allow time for Apple Watch and iPhone to synchronize.
- Look under Fitness > Sessions, not only in the Activity rings.
- Check that the watch is paired with the intended iPhone and Apple Account.
- Check battery and available storage.
- Consider whether the watch restarted, crashed, or the Workout app was interrupted.
The route is missing
- Check Location Services and the Apple Watch Workout permission.
- Confirm that you selected Outdoor Cycle, not Indoor Cycle.
- Consider whether the watch had enough time to obtain location data before departure.
- GPS can be affected by enclosed areas, tall buildings, heavy tree cover, and other obstructions.
A saved workout and a saved GPS route are separate outcomes: the workout may exist even when location data is incomplete.
Speed or distance looks wrong
Possible causes include GPS drift, poor satellite reception, choosing Indoor Cycle outdoors, an incorrect wheel-size setting, a loose sensor, Auto-Pause behavior, or interruptions during the ride. Distance, speed, elevation, calories, and heart rate should be treated as estimates rather than guaranteed measurements.
The screen is being tapped accidentally
Use the physical-button pause method, keep the band secure, and use the workout’s screen-lock or Water Lock controls where appropriate. Do not tighten the band so much that it becomes uncomfortable or restricts circulation.
Is Apple Watch enough for cycling?
For most casual riders, commuters, and Apple Health users, the built-in Workout app is a straightforward way to record outdoor and indoor rides, heart rate, distance, speed, elevation, and route data without buying another app.
A dedicated cycling computer may be a better fit if you need handlebar-mounted navigation, very long ride endurance, extensive bike-specific data fields, multiple sensors, structured training, or a screen designed for constant viewing. That does not make it universally more accurate: performance varies by device, metric, GPS conditions, and sensor setup.
If you already own an Apple Watch, start with the built-in Workout app before buying anything. Add a compatible sensor only when you need cadence, speed, or power data that the watch cannot provide by itself.
