The current method is to enable Developer options, turn on ADB debugging and Wireless debugging, pair the watch to a computer over Wi-Fi, then run adb install. This guide applies mainly to Wear OS watches such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and newer, Google Pixel Watch, Mobvoi TicWatch, and compatible Fossil models.
“Android smartwatch” is not a precise platform category. Older Samsung watches running Tizen, Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, and many proprietary budget watches do not install Android APKs through this method.

First, check whether your smartwatch supports APKs
Wear OS is Google’s Android-based smartwatch platform and supports ADB installation. Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and newer models use Wear OS, while many older Galaxy Watch, Gear, and Active models use Tizen instead. Samsung’s model and platform guidance is available in its Galaxy Watch support documentation.

On the watch, open Settings → About watch and look for Software information, Versions, Wear OS, One UI Watch, or an Android version. Menu names vary by manufacturer and software release. Pairing a watch with an Android phone does not prove that the watch itself runs Android.
An APK can install successfully and still be unsuitable. The app must support the watch’s Wear OS version, processor architecture, screen, permissions, and available hardware. A phone-only APK may fail, crash, or offer no usable watch interface.
Why sideload an APK?
Google Play is preferable whenever the app is available because it handles device targeting, updates, signing, and split APK delivery. Sideloading can nevertheless be useful when:
- The app is unavailable in your country.
- You are testing a beta, internal build, or self-built app.
- The developer distributes a Wear OS APK separately.
- The app was removed from Play.
- You need an older release that remains compatible with your watch.
What you need
- A compatible Wear OS watch with available storage.
- A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer.
- Google’s latest Android SDK Platform Tools, which include ADB.
- The watch and computer connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- A genuine Wear OS APK from the developer or another trustworthy, verifiable source.
- A charged watch and computer.
Google’s current Wear OS wireless-debugging instructions require ADB version 30.0.0 or newer. Use the newest stable Platform Tools package available rather than an unofficial “ADB installer.” Platform Tools are free and backward-compatible with earlier Android platform versions.
Enable Developer options and Wireless debugging
Samsung Galaxy Watch
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Go to About watch → Software or About watch → Software information.
- Tap Software version five times.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options.
Samsung notes that labels can differ by One UI Watch version. Its developer instructions provide the current Samsung-specific path.
Pixel Watch and other Wear OS watches
The location varies. For example, Google documentation lists Pixel Watch developer settings under Settings → System → About → Versions → Build number. If the path differs, search the watch’s Settings app for Developer options or Build number.
After Developer options is available:
- Open Settings → Developer options.
- Enable ADB debugging.
- Enable Wireless debugging.
- Approve the permission prompt, choosing Allow or Always allow on this network when offered.
- Keep the Wireless debugging screen available while pairing.
Some Samsung models also instruct users to disable automatic Wi-Fi in Developer options. That setting is model- and software-dependent, so do not assume it is required on every watch. Current Wear OS documentation identifies Wireless debugging as the normal route; Bluetooth debugging is no longer supported on Wear OS 3 and later according to Google’s Wear OS debugging guidance.

Install ADB Platform Tools
Download Platform Tools from Google’s official download page, extract the archive, and open a terminal or PowerShell window in the extracted platform-tools folder.
Check that ADB works:
adb versionOn Windows PowerShell, use this form if the folder is not on your PATH:
. adb.exe versionIn a normal PowerShell command, the intended command is:
. adb.exe versionIf your editor displays the command incorrectly, type . adb.exe as . adb.exe without the inserted control character; the standard Windows syntax is . adb.exe.

Pair the computer with the watch
Open Settings → Developer options → Wireless debugging on the watch, then select Pair new device. Note the displayed IP address, pairing port, and pairing code.
On the computer, run:
adb pair WATCH_IP:PAIRING_PORTFor example:
adb pair 192.168.1.42:37123Enter the code shown on the watch. A successful pairing produces a message similar to:
Successfully paired to 192.168.1.42:37123Pairing and connecting are separate steps. Pairing normally needs to be done once, but the connection must be re-established when Wireless debugging is restarted or the Wi-Fi network changes.

Connect to the watch
Return to the main Wireless debugging screen—not Pair new device. Find the current IP address and connection port, then run:

Install the APK
Place the APK in the Platform Tools folder or provide its full path. For a standard standalone APK, run:

A file ending in .apk is not necessarily a complete app package. Google Play commonly delivers apps as multiple split APKs. If you have the complete compatible set, install the files together:

adb install-multiple base.apk split_config.arm64_v8a.apk split_config.en.apkThe exact files depend on the app, language, display configuration, and processor architecture.
Files ending in .apkm, .xapk, or .apks are generally archives or bundles, not single APKs that can always be installed with adb install file.apkm. Prefer a genuine standalone Wear OS APK. If you use a split package, obtain the complete compatible set and use a reputable bundle-aware installer or the correct adb install-multiple procedure. Android’s app-bundle documentation explains why one download may contain several APKs.
Choose the correct watch APK
Prefer, in order:
- A Wear OS-specific build supplied by the developer.
- A universal APK, if offered.
- An APK variant matching the watch’s processor architecture.
Do not assume that copying, renaming, or extracting a phone APK creates a watch app. A phone APK may have no wearable interface or may require phone-only services. It may install but lack notifications, tiles, complications, sensors, or companion functionality.
Architecture mismatches can produce INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABIS. Android’s ABI and 64-bit guidance explains why native libraries must match the device. Avoid using --abi as a general fix; it is primarily a controlled-testing option, not a way to make an incompatible consumer APK work.
Open and test the app
After installation, open the watch’s app launcher and search for the app. Test the features that matter, including login, notifications, sensors, complications, tiles, touch controls, and battery behavior. Restart the watch if the icon does not immediately appear.

- A tile is added through the tile-customization screen.
- A complication is selected while customizing a watch face.
- A background service may have no visible launcher icon.
Some apps also require a companion phone app. Successful installation does not guarantee that Google Play services, sensors, permissions, screen dimensions, or other required components are available on your watch.

Remove the app
List installed package names:
adb shell pm list packagesThen uninstall the relevant package:
adb uninstall com.example.watchappWith several devices connected:
adb -s 192.168.1.42:39871 uninstall com.example.watchappDo not remove system packages or manufacturer services merely because their names are unfamiliar.
Turn debugging off when finished
After installing and testing, disable ADB debugging and Wireless debugging in the watch’s Developer options. ADB can issue commands and install applications, so leaving a debugging interface enabled unnecessarily increases risk.
If the sideloaded app makes the watch unstable, uninstall it with ADB, disable both debugging options, and restart the watch. If problems continue, use the manufacturer’s official reset or recovery process. Do not flash firmware or unlock the bootloader merely to install an ordinary APK.

Security and privacy precautions
- Download APKs from the developer or a reputable, verifiable distribution source.
- Avoid modified, pirated, “premium unlocked,” and randomly mirrored packages.
- Check the app name, package name, version, developer identity, and requested permissions.
- Do not grant broad permissions simply because installation succeeds.
- Be especially cautious with banking, password-manager, health, authentication, microphone, location, contacts, and notification apps.
- Disable Wireless debugging and ADB debugging after use.
A watch can expose notifications, health information, contacts, location data, microphone access, and account tokens. Treat sideloading as a debugging operation, not as a harmless file copy.
Alternatives to computer-based ADB
Google Play
Use the watch’s Play Store when the app is available. It is the safest default for normal users because it manages compatibility, updates, signatures, and split delivery. Whether an app is offered for a particular Galaxy Watch is shown through Play’s device compatibility.
Android Studio
Developers can deploy and debug a Wear OS app from Android Studio. Google documents physical-watch deployment in its Wear OS debugging guide. Android Studio is excessive for installing one APK but useful for building or repeatedly testing your own app.
Phone-based ADB utilities
Some Android utilities can act as an ADB client and send an APK to a Wear OS watch over Wireless debugging. This can avoid using a computer, but it adds another app with access to the APK and debugging connection. Such utilities are optional third-party tools, not official Google or Samsung requirements. Check their current Android compatibility, privacy practices, pricing, and Play availability before using one.

Not automatically. Update behavior depends on the package name, signing key, and distribution source. A sideloaded APK may update through Play only when it matches the Play-distributed app’s identity and signing requirements; otherwise, you must update it through the same trusted source or install a compatible signed release manually.
Bottom line
For a Wear OS watch, the reliable current route is: install Google Platform Tools, enable ADB and Wireless debugging, pair with adb pair, connect using the separate connection port, verify with adb devices, and install a genuine watch-compatible APK. Confirm the platform first, treat split packages and phone APKs carefully, and turn debugging off when you are done.
