This is a regional availability expansion—not a new blood-pressure sensor or a cuff-free blood-pressure measurement mode.
The feature looks for patterns associated with possible hypertension. If it sends an alert, you still need a separate blood-pressure cuff and medical follow-up.

What changed
The seven countries added in the January 27, 2026 expansion are:
- Australia
- Brazil
- Colombia
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- South Korea
- Türkiye
Reporting at the time said the rollout brought Hypertension Notifications to 170 countries and regions. Treat that as the reported total following this expansion, not as a permanent live availability figure. Apple’s watchOS feature-availability page is the best place to check current support for a particular country or region.

Apple’s regional Newsroom update was dated January 28, 2026. The feature itself originally arrived with watchOS 26 in September 2025, so this development was an expansion of an existing health feature rather than a brand-new watchOS 26 launch. See Apple’s regional announcement and its original feature announcement.
What Hypertension Notifications actually does
Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure directly and does not display a conventional reading such as 142/90. Instead, it uses data from the watch’s optical heart sensor to analyze patterns related to how blood vessels respond to heartbeats.
The analysis runs passively in the background. Apple says it evaluates heart data over 30-day periods and looks for consistent patterns associated with possible chronic hypertension. If the pattern warrants follow-up, the watch can issue a Hypertension Notification.

Apple describes the feature as a way to surface possible undiagnosed hypertension—not as a diagnosis. Its technical explanation and validation material are available in Apple’s validation paper.

Compatible Apple Watch and iPhone models
You need all of the following:
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later
- iPhone 11 or later
- The latest compatible versions of watchOS and iOS
- Wrist Detection enabled
Apple Watch SE is not supported. A Series 8, older model, or SE cannot gain the feature through a software update.
Eligibility restrictions
Apple’s requirements also state that users must:
- Be at least 22 years old
- Not be pregnant
- Not already have a diagnosis of hypertension
- Not have an active pregnancy recorded in the Health app
The feature is intended to help identify possible previously undiagnosed hypertension. It is not designed to manage an existing diagnosis.
For the complete requirements, see Apple Support.
How to turn on Hypertension Notifications
- Open the Health app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Under Features, tap Health Checklist.
- Tap Hypertension Notifications.
- Confirm your age and whether you have ever been diagnosed with hypertension.
- Tap Continue.
- Follow the explanatory prompts.
- Tap Done.
The feature then works in the background while the watch collects enough data for its evaluation. It is not an on-demand blood-pressure test.

What to do after an alert
A notification means that Apple Watch found patterns associated with possible hypertension during the preceding 30-day evaluation period. It does not mean the watch has confirmed high blood pressure.
Apple’s recommended follow-up is:
- Set up the Blood Pressure Log in the Health app.
- Use a third-party blood-pressure cuff.
- Record readings for seven days.
- Share the results with a healthcare professional.
For dependable follow-up, choose a clinically validated upper-arm cuff and follow its instructions for resting, positioning, and measurement. Apple does not identify one required brand or model on its support page. Examples of established manufacturers include Omron, Withings, and A&D Medical; readers should still check independent clinical-validation information for the specific model.
The roles are different:
| Stage | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch notification | A screening signal based on sensor patterns |
| Blood-pressure cuff | Conventional blood-pressure readings for a defined monitoring period |
| Healthcare professional | Clinical interpretation and advice |
Do not start, stop, or change medication based only on a watch notification.

Important limitations
Apple says Hypertension Notifications:
- Will not identify every case of hypertension.
- Is not intended to diagnose hypertension.
- Is not intended to treat or manage hypertension.
- Does not provide a systolic/diastolic blood-pressure reading.
- Does not detect heart attacks.
- Is not a substitute for medical care.
A lack of notification does not prove that your blood pressure is normal. If you have repeated high readings from a cuff, symptoms, or other health concerns, seek medical advice regardless of what Apple Watch reports.
Chest pain, pressure, tightness, or suspected heart-attack symptoms require emergency services. Do not wait for—or rely on—a Hypertension Notification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why availability is expanding country by country
Hypertension Notifications is treated as a regulated health function, so availability depends on regional requirements and market-by-market rollout decisions. Apple’s regulatory-information hub provides country-specific instructions for use and localized documentation in multiple languages.

The available announcement confirms the seven-country expansion but does not establish a complete regulatory timeline for each country.

Should you buy an Apple Watch for this feature?
Check eligibility before buying. You do not necessarily need Apple’s newest watch: Hypertension Notifications supports Apple Watch Series 9 and Series 10 as well as newer compatible generations, and Ultra 2 is the minimum supported Ultra model.
For someone interested only in occasional blood-pressure screening, an Ultra may be excessive because of its size, weight, and premium positioning. A newer model such as Series 11 adds newer hardware and other current-generation features, but the hypertension-notification function is not exclusive to it. Apple listed a U.S. starting price of $399 for Series 11 at its September 9, 2025 launch; that historical launch price should not be treated as a verified current price in August or September 2026. Check Apple’s current buying page and Series 11 product page for live details.
If you already own an unsupported Series 8 or SE, upgrading solely for this feature may be disproportionate. A compatible Apple Watch still does not remove the need for a validated cuff after an alert—and a cuff remains the instrument used for conventional follow-up measurements.
