watchOS 26 introduces an ARM64 system architecture, but not every Apple Watch that can run watchOS 26 uses it. Apple identifies the ARM64 transition for Apple Watch Series 9 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. Older models—including Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, the original Ultra, and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)—can still run watchOS 26 without becoming ARM64 devices.
The distinction matters most to developers. From April 28, 2026, Apple requires watchOS apps submitted to App Store Connect to use the watchOS 26 SDK or later and include 64-bit support. For most owners, however, there is no architecture setting to change and no automatic reason to buy a new watch.

Apple’s WWDC25 developer presentation describes the architecture transition, while Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility list covers a broader range of models.

- Hardware generation: the system-in-package and processor inside the watch, such as the S9 or a later chip.
- Instruction-set architecture: the format in which compiled software executes. watchOS 26 uses ARM64 on the newer models identified by Apple.
- Operating-system compatibility: whether a particular watch can install and run watchOS 26.
A Series 8 can run watchOS 26, for example, but that does not turn its hardware into a Series 9 or make it an ARM64 watch under Apple’s stated transition. Likewise, ARM64 should not be presented as proof of a particular performance increase, longer battery life, or guaranteed future software support. Apple’s cited material does not provide a universal consumer benchmark for those outcomes.
What changes for Apple Watch owners?
For most owners, nothing needs to be configured manually. Install watchOS 26 through the normal software-update process; the operating system uses the architecture supported by the watch.
The practical effects are indirect:
- Newer watches can run the ARM64 versions of watchOS apps.
- Some apps may need updates as developers rebuild them with the watchOS 26 SDK and 64-bit support.
- Older watches that remain compatible with watchOS 26 continue to use the architecture supported by their hardware and software configuration.
- Feature availability still depends on the watch model, paired iPhone, region, and—in some cases—Apple Intelligence requirements.
There is no responsible basis for buying a new watch solely on the assumption that ARM64 automatically makes every app faster or improves battery life. A new model is more relevant if you need a feature restricted to newer hardware, require a physical ARM64 test device, or are replacing an unsupported or aging watch.

watchOS 26 compatibility does not mean feature parity
Apple’s feature restrictions reinforce the difference between operating-system support and hardware capability. According to Apple’s watchOS 26 feature documentation:

Availability can also vary by country or region, and some features require a compatible iPhone. Health features should not be treated as a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice. See Apple’s watchOS 26 feature and availability notes before assuming a feature works on a particular model or in a particular market.
What developers must do
The architecture transition has a more concrete effect on developers than on consumers. Apple announced that watchOS apps submitted beginning in April 2026 must include 64-bit support and use the watchOS 26 SDK. Apple’s current App Store Connect guidance sets the operative deadline at April 28, 2026: uploads must be built with Xcode 26 or later and the watchOS 26 SDK or later.
These are related but distinct requirements:
- Architecture: the submitted app must include 64-bit support.
- SDK: the app must be built with the watchOS 26 SDK or later.
- Toolchain: the current App Store Connect rule requires Xcode 26 or later.
Apple recommends using Standard Architectures for Apple Watch targets rather than maintaining a manually specified architecture list. The exact output still depends on the deployment target, embedded frameworks, packages, and other project settings.
Developers should also remember that a 64-bit submission requirement does not automatically mean every older watchOS-compatible device must be dropped. The minimum deployment target remains a separate decision, provided it satisfies Apple’s SDK and architecture rules.

Code areas that deserve an audit
Most apps will not fail simply because watchOS 26 exists. Risk is higher in projects that use low-level code or make assumptions about native data sizes and memory layout.
Higher-risk areas
- Custom C, C++, or Objective-C code.
UnsafePointerandUnsafeRawPointeroperations.- Pointer-to-integer conversions.
- Use of
IntorUIntwhere a fixed-width type is required. - Binary formats or network protocols that serialize native integers.
- Swift structures shared with C or other binary interfaces.
- Manual memory offsets and
MemoryLayoutassumptions. - Bit manipulation that depends on implicit integer widths.
- Architecture-specific compiler flags.
- Prebuilt watchOS frameworks or libraries that lack the required architecture slices.
Apple specifically highlights differences involving Float, Int, and pointer-based calculations in its developer presentation.
Safer migration practices
- Use
Int32,Int64,UInt32, orUInt64when a data format requires a fixed width. - Do not serialize Swift’s native
Intdirectly when the data must remain portable. - Use Standard Architectures unless the project has a documented reason for a custom configuration.
- Rebuild embedded watchOS frameworks, packages, and third-party libraries.
- Test in the Apple Watch Simulator and on physical hardware.
- Use availability and capability checks instead of inferring hardware support from the watchOS version alone.
A practical Xcode migration checklist
- Install Xcode 26 or later.
- Open the watchOS project and select the Apple Watch app target.
- Open Build Settings and locate Architectures.
- Set the target to Standard Architectures, unless a documented platform-specific configuration is required.
- Confirm that the watchOS deployment target still covers the models the app intends to support.
- Rebuild all embedded watchOS frameworks, packages, and binary dependencies.
- Run the app in the Apple Watch Simulator.
- Test on an ARM64 watch, such as Series 9 or later or Ultra 2 or later.
- Audit integer widths, floating-point assumptions, pointer arithmetic, memory layout, and serialization.
- Run unit, UI, notification, complication, background-refresh, workout-extension, and connectivity tests relevant to the app.
- Archive the project.
- Inspect the archive for missing or incompatible watchOS slices.
- Upload through App Store Connect and address the exact target or binary named in any validation error.
If a build fails, check the toolchain and SDK first, then replace manual architecture settings, rebuild third-party binaries, and inspect low-level code for native-width assumptions. Cleaning derived data can help after configuration changes, but it will not fix a library that was never rebuilt for the required architecture.

Should you buy a newer Apple Watch?
Keep your current watch if:
- It is on Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility list.
- It performs acceptably for your use.
- Your essential apps continue to work.
- You do not need newer-model features such as Wrist Flick or hypertension notifications.
Consider a newer model if:
- You specifically need ARM64 hardware for watchOS development and physical-device testing.
- You need a watchOS 26 feature restricted to Series 9-and-later or Ultra 2-and-later hardware.
- You want a newer hardware platform with the best current prospect of supporting future features—without treating that as a guarantee.
- Your present watch is no longer supported, failing, or unsuitable for your workload.
The original Apple Watch Ultra remains on the broader watchOS 26 compatibility list, but Apple’s architecture announcement places the ARM64 cutoff at Ultra 2 and later. An Ultra is therefore not automatically an ARM64 watch simply because it can install watchOS 26.
The bottom line for developers
Developers should plan for the 64-bit and watchOS 26 SDK submission requirements rather than waiting for an app to fail in review. The largest risks are concentrated in unsafe code, pointer arithmetic, native-width integers, serialization, memory-layout assumptions, and stale third-party binaries. A normal Swift app using current frameworks may require little code modification, but it still needs a clean rebuild and testing on both simulator and physical hardware.
The architecture transition also does not require separate, unrelated app products for every Apple Watch generation. Use the supported architectures and deployment target appropriate to the app, then gate model-specific features with the relevant availability and capability checks.
Final answer
watchOS 26 does not make every compatible Apple Watch ARM64. The ARM64 group is Apple Watch Series 9 and later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. Series 6 through Series 8, the original Ultra, and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) can still run watchOS 26 without joining that architecture group; Apple’s cited announcement does not separately classify the SE 3.
For owners, the change is mostly invisible and is not, by itself, a reason to upgrade. For developers, it establishes a new distribution baseline: 64-bit support, the watchOS 26 SDK, and—under Apple’s current App Store Connect rule—Xcode 26 or later for submissions from April 28, 2026.
