To insure a high-value watch, first check whether your homeowners, renters, or condo policy caps watch coverage below the watch’s value. If it does, ask your insurer about scheduling the watch individually or using a separate valuables policy. Before buying coverage, confirm what losses are covered, how claims are valued, and what appraisal and documentation the insurer requires. Those details vary by policy and jurisdiction; an appraisal alone does not guarantee coverage or payment.
Check what your existing policy actually covers
Homeowners, renters, and condo insurance may cover watches as personal property, but a policy can impose a lower jewelry or watch sublimit and a deductible. Check the policy or ask your insurer for the limit that applies to this specific watch, the deductible, covered causes of loss, and how a total-loss claim would be settled. Progressive describes scheduling a watch through a rider when an ordinary sublimit is insufficient; Liberty Mutual describes scheduled endorsements and separate valuables policies. These are options to ask about, not guarantees of availability or coverage. Progressive’s watch and jewelry coverage guidance and Liberty Mutual’s valuable-items guidance explain these approaches.

A manufacturer’s warranty is not a substitute for insurance: it may address defects or wear, while theft and loss are separate risks. Progressive distinguishes warranty protection from those risks.

Compare scheduled cover with a separate valuables policy
Ask your insurer or licensed agent to compare the actual policy wording for these two routes. The names and availability of products vary; the controlling contract, not a general product description, determines coverage.

| What to compare | Scheduled cover on an existing policy | Separate valuables or jewelry policy |
|---|---|---|
| Limits | Ask for the scheduled limit for this watch and any collection cap. | Ask for the per-item limit and any collection cap. |
| Losses covered | Confirm whether theft, accidental damage, accidental loss, and unexplained disappearance are covered. | Confirm the same loss types in the separate contract; do not assume they are included. |
| Location and travel | Ask whether coverage applies outside the home and when traveling, including internationally. | Ask for the policy’s geographic scope and travel terms. |
| Deductible | Confirm the deductible that applies to a claim for the watch. | Confirm whether a deductible applies and its amount. |
| Claim settlement | Ask whether the contract provides repair, replacement, actual cash value, or another settlement basis. | Ask how the insurer determines payment and whether any agreed-value or market-value provision applies. |
| Appraisal and updates | Confirm the appraisal threshold, accepted appraiser, report-age limit, required photos, and how to update the scheduled value. | Confirm the same requirements for this policy and how revised values are recorded. |
| Security conditions | Ask whether storage or security requirements apply and where those conditions appear in the contract. | Ask the same question and get any applicable conditions in writing. |
Settlement terms are not interchangeable. Liberty Mutual advises checking whether coverage is based on actual cash value or replacement cost. Chubb describes an agreed-value cash settlement option and a market-value feature subject to its policy terms and collection maximum. Those are examples of a particular insurer’s product features, not terms to assume will appear in another policy. Read the issued contract and ask the insurer to identify the clauses and exclusions that govern your watch. See Liberty Mutual and Chubb’s jewelry coverage page.
Confirm the appraisal rules before ordering one
There is no universal appraisal threshold or report format. Ask the insurer whether an appraisal is required, what valuation basis it accepts, who may prepare it, how recent it must be, and whether it requires a particular form or photographs. Published requirements illustrate how much rules can differ:

- Progressive, United States: Progressive says it requires an appraisal for watches valued at $5,000 or more; below that amount it asks for a detailed description. This is Progressive’s stated requirement, not an industry-wide rule. Progressive’s guidance was updated June 25, 2026.
- Chubb, United States: Chubb says it requires an appraisal for individual jewelry pieces valued at $100,000 or more. Below that, it asks for a detailed description and estimated value; its page says photos should show a date indicator. This is Chubb’s published requirement, not a general threshold. Chubb’s coverage page was accessed in 2026.
- TH March, United Kingdom: Its named March Plus policy requires a UK jewelry/watch valuation no more than three years old for a watch above £1,000. The valuation must include a full description and replacement value and be submitted within 30 days of the policy start. TH March also specifies the valuer’s and insured or wearer’s names and addresses, plus a signature and date. These are March Plus terms, not UK-wide rules or guidance for another insurer. See TH March’s policy information.
For its appraisal guidance, Progressive relays Lavalier’s description of report contents. A useful watch appraisal can identify the owner and appraiser, describe the watch, include model and serial numbers, state a replacement cost based on comparable items, and carry the appraiser’s signature and date. Progressive notes that photos or a recent appraisal may also be required depending on the insurer. Confirm the required contents and valuation basis with your own carrier before commissioning the report. Progressive’s appraisal guidance.

Make the appraisal specific enough to identify the watch
Ask the appraiser to record details that distinguish your watch and explain the stated value. Do not treat a valuation as proof of authenticity unless the appraiser expressly provides that assessment and has a basis for it.

Market value, replacement cost, agreed value, and actual cash value are different concepts. Ask which basis the insurer needs for the appraisal and which basis the policy uses to settle a claim; do not assume the figure in one automatically determines the other.
Build and protect an ownership record
Keep a durable file that links the insured watch to your purchase and appraisal records. Include the original receipt or purchase invoice, the appraisal, clear photos from several angles, the make, model/reference and serial number, and relevant manufacturer or service papers. Store digital copies securely and consider a fire-resistant safe for paper originals. Liberty Mutual suggests secure cloud backup or a fireproof safe and recommends updating an inventory when new items are acquired. A safe is optional document storage, not insurance or a guarantee of coverage while the watch is stored. Liberty Mutual’s inventory guidance.
Review the value and policy when circumstances change
Replacement prices and market values can change. Ask the insurer how to update the watch’s scheduled amount, whether a new appraisal is needed, and when the revised value takes effect. Chubb says its own policy can provide up to 150% of the itemized insured value if market value rises before a covered loss, subject to the collection maximum. That is a product-specific feature, not a general rule; check the terms of the policy actually issued to you. Chubb’s policy description.
