On a compatible fēnix 8, Garmin Connect downloads released software updates in the background while the watch is connected to your phone. That does not mean the update always installs automatically: Garmin says the watch may prompt you to install after the download, and the download can take up to a week to arrive. Garmin’s published update guidance does not document an on/off switch for automatic downloads, so check the manual for your exact model and software version before looking for one.
What “automatic updates” means on the fēnix 8
Garmin Customer Support says its Garmin Connect app downloads software updates “automatically behind the scenes” while a compatible device is connected to a mobile phone. The guidance distinguishes downloading from installing: an update may download first and then prompt you to install it. Keep the watch connected to the phone and Garmin Connect if you want to receive background downloads.

Garmin says released updates may take up to a week to download before prompting for installation. That is Garmin’s stated possible delay, not a guaranteed arrival schedule for every update or watch.

Can you turn automatic downloads off?
Garmin’s fēnix 8 AMOLED software-support page describes background downloading but does not document an Auto Update switch or a menu path for disabling it. The available guidance therefore does not establish whether your particular fēnix 8 variant or software version has a user-facing toggle. Consult the owner’s manual that matches your exact watch before relying on a setting path; do not assume that a setting found for another Garmin model applies.

Other ways to check for and download updates
If you do not want to wait for a Garmin Connect background download, Garmin lists Garmin Express and Wi‑Fi sync as additional update routes. Their connection requirements differ:
| Route | What you need | What Garmin says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin Connect | A compatible watch connected to your phone with Garmin Connect. | Background downloads may take up to a week before the watch prompts you to install; Garmin Customer Support, fēnix 8 AMOLED software-support page. |
| Garmin Express | Connect the compatible watch to a computer and use Garmin Express to check for and download updates. | Garmin says Express checks for updates when the device is connected; no specific download schedule is stated. |
| Wi‑Fi sync | A Wi‑Fi-capable watch connected to a Wi‑Fi network. | Garmin’s cited update guidance does not state a specific Wi‑Fi rollout or download schedule. |
Use Garmin Express
- Connect your compatible fēnix 8 to a computer.
- Open Garmin Express and check for available updates, then follow its prompts to download them.
Garmin’s support guidance describes the computer-based check and download but does not specify additional setup steps here. Use Garmin Express’s current prompts for your device.

Use Wi‑Fi sync, if your model supports it
Wi‑Fi capability depends on the fēnix 8 variant. Check your exact model’s owner’s manual to confirm support. Garmin’s fēnix 8 Wi‑Fi support reference says the watch must first be connected to Garmin Connect or Garmin Express before it can connect to Wi‑Fi. Once Wi‑Fi is set up, use Wi‑Fi sync as an alternative update route.
When an update has not appeared
- Check the phone connection: Garmin Connect’s background download requires the compatible watch to be connected to your phone.
- Allow for the stated delay: Garmin says a released update may take up to a week to download before prompting for installation.
- Try another official route: Connect the watch to a computer and check with Garmin Express, or use Wi‑Fi sync if your variant supports it.
- Confirm model-specific instructions: Use the manual for your watch variant, especially for Wi‑Fi capability or any setting that claims to control automatic downloads.
Software versions and beta updates
Garmin’s fēnix 8 AMOLED support page listed software version 22.41 in July 2026. The listed fixes included treadmill calibration failing to produce more accurate treadmill distance and a possible device reset during a golf activity. This is a dated example from the AMOLED support page; it should not be treated as the current version for every fēnix 8 variant or region.

Garmin also describes a public beta program for software still under development. It is optional, limited to select models, and not every device receives beta software. The support information cited here does not confirm current beta eligibility for a particular fēnix 8 variant, and beta enrollment is not required for routine updates.
