Measure your wrist where you want the watch to sit, using a soft tape or a non-stretch strip of paper or string. Keep it snug without pulling tight, then repeat the measurement. That circumference helps you size the strap or bracelet; choosing a watch case that looks and feels right also depends on its dimensions and your wrist’s width.
How to measure your wrist
- Choose the wearing position. Measure around the wrist where the watch will normally sit, commonly just behind the wrist bone. Victorinox’s guide recommends measuring at the watch’s intended position.
- Wrap a measuring tool around your wrist. Use a soft flexible tape measure, or wrap non-stretch paper or string around your wrist and mark where the ends meet. Citizen describes both methods.
- Keep the wrap comfortable. It should lie close to your skin without squeezing or pulling tight. If you are measuring for a specific strap or bracelet, check its maker’s instructions and think about how loosely you prefer to wear it.
- Read and record the measurement. Read the tape, or lay the paper or string flat and measure from its end to the mark with a ruler. Record the number and unit.
- Measure again. Repeat to check your result. For a cut-to-fit band, follow its instructions and recheck before cutting; CASIO’s cut-to-fit guidance advises measuring twice.
A soft sewing tape is convenient, but it is not essential: non-stretch paper or string and a ruler work too.

What your measurement tells you
Your wrist circumference is useful for checking whether a strap or bracelet’s stated sizing range includes your wrist. It does not determine a universal “right” watch-case diameter. Comfort depends on the band material, its adjustment system, and how much ease you like. Follow the sizing method for the particular band rather than adding the same allowance to every leather, rubber, textile, mesh, or metal band.
Metal bracelets need their own sizing method
Bracelet tools can define fit differently. Hamilton’s sizing instructions use room for a little finger and ask the wearer to account for a looser preference; the tool sizes to the submitted measurement without adding extra slack. Treat that as Hamilton’s method, not a universal rule for all watch bands. Before ordering, check whether the bracelet can be adjusted or links removed, and review the retailer’s fit and return options. A printed measurement does not necessarily equal the finished bracelet length.

How to judge whether the watch case will fit
Once you have your circumference, look up the specific watch’s lug-to-lug length—the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the other—and compare it with the flat width of your wrist. Also consider case thickness and strap width. Victorinox’s fit guidance treats these as relevant dimensions alongside wrist size.
Some sizing tools use wrist width rather than circumference. Garmin Singapore’s guide measures width horizontally, 2.5 cm above the wrist bone, and offers a credit-card method for people without a ruler. That is a separate measurement for its selection tool; do not substitute it for circumference when sizing a band.

Dimensions can help narrow down options, but they cannot guarantee how a watch will look or feel on you. Trying on the watch is the most direct way to assess its comfort and proportions.
