Read a flyback chronograph in two parts: use the regular hour and minute hands for the time of day, and use the chronograph hand and its registers to measure elapsed time. While the chronograph is running, the flyback control lets you reset the display and immediately start a new interval without first stopping it. Register layouts and pusher functions differ by model, so check the dial markings and the watch’s manual before operating an unfamiliar watch.
Which hands and subdials show elapsed time?
A chronograph measures elapsed time separately from the watch’s ordinary time display. On many models, a central chronograph seconds hand sweeps when timing is active, while smaller registers count elapsed minutes or hours. Other subdials can serve a different purpose: a small-seconds register may show the watch’s continuously running seconds rather than elapsed time.

For example, Raymond Weil’s Freelancer Pilot Flyback manual identifies the left subdial as small seconds and the right subdial as chronograph minutes. That arrangement is specific to the example, not a universal dial layout. Hamilton explains common chronograph conventions in its guide to using a chronograph watch.

- Use the hour and minute hands to read the current time of day.
- Find the chronograph seconds hand, usually the long central hand. It indicates elapsed seconds when the chronograph is running.
- If the interval runs beyond the seconds hand’s sweep, read the chronograph-minute or chronograph-hour register. Use its printed scale and the manual to determine what it counts.
- Check whether a small-seconds register keeps moving when the chronograph is stopped. If it does, it is showing the watch’s running seconds, not the measured interval.
Do not assume a register’s purpose from its position alone. A tachymeter scale, when present around the dial or bezel, is also separate from the registers and from the flyback mechanism.

How do the pushers work?
On many two-pusher chronographs, the upper pusher starts and stops timing, while the lower pusher resets the counters. This is a common arrangement, not a guarantee: the exact functions and sequence depend on the watch. Follow the markings and the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
Using the flyback control during timing
On a flyback chronograph, pressing the designated flyback or reset pusher while the chronograph is running resets the hands and starts a fresh measurement as part of the same operation. TAG Heuer describes the function as combining stop, reset and start into one action. Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains that the hands return to zero and a new measurement begins as the pusher is released. The precise feel and sequence can vary, so consult the model manual.

Starting a new interval on a standard chronograph
A conventional chronograph generally requires you to stop the current timing, reset the counters, and then start again. Do not try to reset an unfamiliar chronograph while it is running unless its instructions confirm that it supports that operation.
Flyback versus standard chronograph
| What you want to do | Standard chronograph | Flyback chronograph |
|---|---|---|
| Start or stop timing | Typically uses a start/stop pusher. | Typically uses the same start/stop control. |
| Begin a new interval | Stop, reset, then start again. | Activate the flyback control while timing to reset and begin a fresh interval. |
| Reset while running | Do not assume this is supported; follow the model’s instructions. | The flyback function is designed to reset and restart during timing. |
Pusher placement and operation are not identical across watches. The table describes the usual distinction, not a substitute for the instructions for a specific reference.

What does a tachymeter measure?
A tachymeter is a scale, often printed around the dial or bezel, that can convert the time taken to cover a known distance into a rate such as speed. It is an optional scale found on some chronographs; it does not indicate elapsed minutes or hours, and it is not what makes a chronograph a flyback.

Fondation Haute Horlogerie connects the flyback function to airborne navigation, where pilots needed to restart measurements quickly. The Foundation states that Longines was the first company to patent the flyback function on a wristwatch, in 1936. It also describes the feature’s inclusion in French military Type 20 pilot-watch specifications in the early 1950s and later Type 21 specifications. These are historical claims attributed to the Foundation, not a universal account of every flyback watch’s development.

For a model-specific example, TAG Heuer’s Autavia Flyback Chronometer article discusses the complication. A product name alone is not enough to confirm how its pushers work; check the official listing or manual for the exact watch.
