How to Read a Watch Specification Sheet: Tourbillon Axes, Case Size, and Weight

A watch spec sheet mixes movement and case details. Learn what tourbillon axes describe, which dimensions indicate case size, and how to compare weight fairly.

A watch specification sheet describes a particular reference; it is not a universal template. To read one accurately, distinguish movement details from external case measurements, and check exactly what each number refers to. Tourbillon axis count describes how the regulating assembly moves—not how many tourbillons the watch has. Case diameter, thickness, lug width and weight each answer a different question about size and wear.

What tourbillon axes mean

A tourbillon places the balance and escapement inside a rotating cage. A multi-axis design adds rotation in another plane, so the regulating assembly moves in more than one plane. Axis count describes that motion; it is not a count of tourbillons.

Jaeger-LeCoultre describes its Gyrotourbillon as rotating the balance and escapement on two planes around “two inclined axes.” The brand’s official history of the multi-axis tourbillon explains the design as a response to positional errors. That description explains the mechanism and its rationale; it does not establish that multi-axis tourbillons are more accurate in real-world use than other watches.

How to distinguish case dimensions from movement dimensions

Case measurements describe the watch’s exterior; movement measurements describe the calibre inside it. A diameter or thickness figure is meaningful only when read with its label. Manufacturers may list both sets, and the dimensions should not be substituted for one another.

  • 【Wide Applications】 Compared to the ordinary rulers, this stainless steel caliper can measure not only length but also caliber and depth, allows you to measure circular and cylindrical objects, more functions and better performance will satisfy you. It has always been used by professionals and hobbyists alike, jewelers, hobbyists, woodworkers, machinists, DIY, automotive mechanics, and more.
Specification What it describes What to check
Case diameter or case size A width-like measurement of the case, usually in millimetres. Use the maker’s exact label. The examples below do not establish one universal convention for measuring every case shape.
Case thickness or height A separate case dimension, often relevant to how the watch sits beneath a cuff. Check whether the manufacturer calls it height, thickness or something else.
Lug width The distance associated with the strap or bracelet attachment. It is not the case diameter. Do not treat it as interchangeable with lug-to-lug, either.
Movement diameter or width The size of the calibre inside the case. Do not use it as the outside case diameter.
Movement thickness or height The calibre’s vertical dimension. Do not use it as the case thickness.

Manufacturer examples show why the labels matter. Montres Breguet lists the Marine Tourbillon 5577 with a 42.5 mm case diameter and 24.5 mm lug width, while its calibre 581 is 37 mm wide and 3 mm thick (Breguet specifications). Glashütte Original lists the PanoLunarTourbillon case at 40.00 mm in diameter and 13.10 mm in height (Glashütte Original specifications).

Vacheron Constantin gives the Overseas Tourbillon Skeleton a 42.5 mm case diameter and 10.39 mm case thickness, while separately listing its movement at 31 mm in diameter and 5.65 mm thick (Vacheron Constantin specifications). Audemars Piguet likewise lists a 44 mm case size for the Royal Oak Concept and separate Calibre 2954 dimensions of 35.6 mm total diameter and 9.2 mm thickness (Audemars Piguet specifications). These are figures for named models, not general rules about watch dimensions.

What case size can—and cannot—tell you about fit

Diameter, thickness and lug dimensions describe different aspects of a watch’s shape. No single figure establishes how it will sit on a particular wrist. For a comparison, use the same labelled dimensions on both exact references, and include lug-to-lug if the manufacturers publish it. A digital caliper can help check a physical case measurement against a stated dimension, but it cannot determine comfort or wrist fit.

How to interpret a watch’s weight

Read the weight label and its scope before comparing numbers. Breitling’s Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 specification page uses the label “Watch Head Weight (Approx.)” (Breitling specifications). “Watch head” identifies the head rather than necessarily the complete watch with its strap or bracelet; “approx.” signals that the figure is not presented as exact. The cited page does not state a numeric weight.

Digital Caliper, Caliper Measuring Tool with Stainless Steel, Electronic Micrometer Caliper with Large LCD Screen, Auto-Off Feature, Inch and Millimeter Conversion (6 Inch/150 mm)
  • [INCH/MM Conversion]: One button can quickly convert two measuring unit (INCH/MM). Measuring Range:0 - 150mm (6") / Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005")/Accuracy: ±0.02mm (0.001")
  • [Stainless Steel Material]: The vernier caliper is made of high-strength stainless steel, which is waterproof, stain-proof and oil-proof. The ergonomic design brings you a comfortable feeling.
  • [Large and Clear Display Screen]: Large LCD display gives you a clear reading. The thumb rolling and locking screw provide easy sliding, accurate positioning, and fine adjustment.
  • [Multifunctional Use]: The digital micrometer can easily and accurately measure internal, external, height and depth dimensions.
  • [Automatically shut off]: When you have no action on the dial caliper, it can automatically shut off after 4 minutes.

There is no universal convention established here for what a maker includes in a weight figure. Compare head with head, or complete watch with complete watch. If the specification does not say whether a strap, bracelet or clasp is included, treat the comparison as uncertain. Material and strap or bracelet configuration also affect what is being compared.

A practical checklist for comparing specification sheets

  1. Match exact references. Similar model names can refer to different versions, so compare the specific reference numbers.
  2. Compare exterior dimensions by label. Note case diameter, thickness or height, and lug width or lug-to-lug where stated. Keep each measurement in its own category.
  3. Check the materials and configuration. Record case material and whether the watch is shown with a strap or bracelet; these details matter when interpreting weight.
  4. Read the weight scope. Record whether the figure is approximate and whether it applies to the head or the complete watch. Mark the scope as uncertain if it is not stated.
  5. Separate movement data. Compare calibre dimensions only with other movement dimensions. For mechanical characteristics, check the relevant fields—such as winding type, frequency and power reserve—rather than inferring them from case measurements.
  6. Verify units and source wording. Keep the manufacturer’s units and labels with each figure. Product pages publish different subsets of specifications, so an unlisted field is not a basis for assuming a value.

For example, Patek Philippe’s technical data document for reference 6002R gives Calibre R TO 27 QR SID LU CL an overall diameter of 38 mm and a height of 12.61 mm (Patek Philippe movement technical data). Those are movement dimensions, not case dimensions.
