Depending on your goal, you may need to turn cellular off temporarily, remove the plan without erasing the watch, erase the watch while keeping or removing the plan, or unpair it before selling. These actions are not interchangeable—and removing a plan from the watch does not necessarily cancel your carrier subscription.
Choose the right cellular reset

| Stop billing | Remove the plan from the watch, then contact the carrier separately to cancel service. |

Remove the cellular plan without erasing Apple Watch
Use this method when you want to remove a stale or unwanted cellular profile but keep the watch otherwise intact.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap the Info button beside the plan.
- Tap Remove [carrier] Plan.
- Tap again to confirm.
This removes the plan from the Apple Watch; it does not automatically guarantee that the carrier account or recurring subscription has been cancelled. You may need to ask the carrier to remove the watch from your account or stop billing. Carrier policies and fees vary. See Apple’s cellular setup and transfer guidance.

Erase Apple Watch and keep or remove the plan
Use the on-watch erase process when you want to reset the watch’s content and settings.
- On Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if prompted.
- When asked about cellular service, choose Keep Plan or Remove Plan.
- Tap Erase All.
Which option should you choose?
- Keep Plan: Choose this when the same watch will be paired with the same iPhone again.
- Remove Plan: Choose this when the watch will be paired with another iPhone, the carrier is changing, or cellular service is being discontinued.
Removing the plan during erasure still does not necessarily cancel carrier billing.

Unpair Apple Watch before selling or giving it away
If the watch is leaving your possession, do not simply erase it from the watch. Unpair it through the paired iPhone so the process erases the watch and removes Activation Lock.

- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the Info button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm the unpairing.
- When prompted, choose Remove Cellular Plan.
- Enter your Apple Account password to disable Activation Lock.
- Complete the unpairing process.
Apple explains the resale and Activation Lock requirements in its Apple Watch unpairing and erase instructions. You should also contact the carrier separately if the cellular subscription needs to be cancelled.

If the paired iPhone is unavailable
You can erase the watch directly:
- Open Settings > General > Reset on the watch.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
- Choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Tap Erase All.
Direct erasure does not remove Activation Lock. If the watch is being sold or has already been given away, remove it from your Apple Account through Find My on iCloud.com when possible. The new owner cannot properly use a watch that remains linked to your account.
Transfer cellular service to a new Apple Watch
- Remove the plan from the old watch in the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, or erase the old watch and remove the plan during setup.
- Pair the new cellular Apple Watch with the iPhone.
- During setup, tap Set up Cellular.
- Follow the carrier’s activation or transfer instructions.
Some carriers offer direct plan transfers through the Apple Watch app; others require carrier assistance. If the transfer option does not appear, contact the carrier. Eligibility depends on the carrier, country, account type, and plan.

Change carriers
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > Cellular.
- Remove the old plan if it is still listed.
- Tap Add a New Plan.
- Follow the new carrier’s instructions.
In ordinary setups, the iPhone and Apple Watch use the same carrier. Apple Watch For Your Kids has different account and carrier requirements. Supported carriers, plans, and fees vary by location.

The old plan still appears
Go to My Watch > Cellular > Info > Remove [carrier] Plan, then try adding the new plan. If the old plan cannot be removed or the new one will not activate, the carrier may need to clear the watch’s old account association.

The transfer option is missing
Update the iPhone and Apple Watch, make sure the iPhone is connected to its carrier network, and try Set up Cellular again. Transfer support is carrier-dependent; contact the carrier if the option remains unavailable.
You are still being billed
That does not necessarily mean the removal failed. Removing a plan from Apple Watch and cancelling the carrier subscription are separate actions. Ask the carrier to confirm the account’s cancellation status.
You forgot the watch passcode
If you cannot open Settings, follow Apple’s current passcode reset and erase guidance. Remember that erasing the watch directly still leaves Activation Lock in place.
You are considering deleting the iPhone eSIM
Do not delete the iPhone’s eSIM as a routine Apple Watch troubleshooting step. Apple warns that erasing an eSIM may require the carrier to issue a replacement. Handle the Apple Watch plan through the Apple Watch app, and remove the iPhone eSIM only when directed by the carrier. See Apple’s eSIM guidance.
