Garmin Forerunner 165 Gets Public Beta Update 20.21—but the Changelog Raises Questions

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Garmin released public beta software version 20.21 for the Forerunner 165 on August 7, 2024. The rollout initially reached approximately 20% of eligible users, so it was not a universal update for every Forerunner 165 owner. More importantly, the published changelog appeared to repeat the notes for the preceding 20.15 beta, leaving the scale of the changes unclear.

Garmin listed Garmin Share, device-settings Backup and Restore, Pool Swim improvements, and fixes for truncated map data, calendar displays, and translations. Those are Garmin’s release-note claims; the available information does not independently establish how extensively each fix changed real-world watch behavior.

What Garmin beta 20.21 includes

Version 20.21 is a public beta for the Garmin Forerunner 165. It should not be confused with a stable firmware release or with similarly numbered software for other Garmin watch families.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Garmin Share: Garmin listed support for transferring selected information between compatible Garmin devices. Compatibility is device-specific, and Garmin Share is not simply a replacement for phone-to-watch syncing.
  • Device Settings Backup and Restore: The feature is intended to preserve and restore watch settings, which could be useful after a reset, replacement, or major reconfiguration. Garmin’s listing does not establish that every Connect IQ app, data field, app setting, or activity record is restored automatically.
  • Pool Swim improvements: Garmin included general improvements to the Pool Swim activity. The published information does not specify whether this means better lap counting, stroke detection, or particular new metrics.
  • Bug fixes: Garmin reported fixes for truncated map data, calendar-display problems, and translation issues.

These items describe the stated changelog, not an independently verified test of the Forerunner 165. Garmin’s device-specific software information is available through its official support page.

Why 20.21 may not be a major new release

The central problem with this beta is the release-note history. The 20.21 changelog was reported as appearing substantially identical to the changelog for version 20.15, which arrived in July 2024.

That does not prove that the firmware files are identical. Garmin may have reused the same release-note text, issued a corrective or reissued build, or included changes that were not documented in the visible notes. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the public notes do not clearly show what changed between 20.15 and 20.21.

Accordingly, 20.21 should not be presented as a major feature release. Its listed additions may matter to owners who want Garmin Share or settings backup, but the documentation does not establish a separate, substantial feature set beyond the earlier 20.xx beta.

Which Forerunner 165 models are covered?

The reported update concerns the Garmin Forerunner 165. Owners should check the exact model, including whether they have the standard Forerunner 165 or the Forerunner 165 Music, before assuming that the same package or eligibility rules apply.

Garmin firmware numbers are not universal across its portfolio. A 20.xx release for a Forerunner 165 is not automatically related to a 20.xx release for a fēnix, Instinct, or another product line. Separate watches can have different software histories, rollout schedules, bugs, and eligibility requirements.

How eligible owners could check for 20.21

The reported manual path on the Forerunner 165 was:

  1. Open the Main menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Open Software Update.
  5. Choose Check For Updates.

The labels can vary by device, region, or later firmware. Garmin also distributes updates through Garmin Connect, Garmin Express on a computer, and Wi-Fi on supported devices. Its Garmin Express guidance explains the computer-based method.

Not seeing 20.21 immediately did not necessarily mean that a watch was incompatible. The initial rollout covered approximately 20% of eligible users, and beta availability could also depend on enrollment, model variant, region, and staged delivery.

Should you install this beta?

Install it if you are comfortable testing software

20.21 may make sense for owners who were already enrolled in Garmin’s public beta program, want early access to Garmin Share or settings backup, or are willing to tolerate bugs and report problems. It may also be worth considering if one of the listed fixes appears relevant to an issue on your watch.

Garmin’s beta program is intended for users who accept that software is still under development and are prepared to submit feedback through Garmin’s beta channels. Public beta does not mean every problem has been resolved.

Wait if reliability matters more than early access

Waiting for stable firmware is the safer choice if you are preparing for a race, rely heavily on GPS, heart-rate tracking, music, notifications, or a specific Connect IQ app, or need predictable battery life. Beta software can introduce bugs, crashes, sensor regressions, unexpected behavior, or changes that are later removed.

The unclear 20.21 notes also weaken the practical case for installing immediately: the visible documentation does not clearly identify a new feature that every owner needs.

Prepare before installing

  • Sync the watch with Garmin Connect before starting.
  • Record important watch-face, activity, data-field, notification, and system settings.
  • Make sure the watch has sufficient battery and remains connected during the update.
  • Check that any essential third-party Connect IQ apps and data fields are compatible.
  • Avoid installing immediately before an important workout or event.

Settings backup and restore can help with reconfiguration, but do not assume that it preserves every form of app data or activity information. Keep a separate record of anything important.

If the beta causes problems

First, allow the watch to complete any pending sync and restart it only according to Garmin’s support guidance. Check Garmin Connect and Garmin Express for a newer build or a failed-update message, and document the symptoms, battery behavior, sensor connections, and steps that reproduce the problem.

Report suspected bugs through the appropriate Garmin beta channel. Problems reported for other Garmin watches should not automatically be attributed to the Forerunner 165: firmware behavior is model-specific. For example, separate forum reports concerned crashes, sensor issues, and restarts on some fēnix 7 releases, not this Forerunner 165 beta. See Garmin’s public beta-program guidance before attempting any recovery procedure.

Downgrading or backdating firmware should be treated as a last resort and performed only with device-appropriate official instructions. A rollback can require a reset or restoration, so back up and record settings first. Garmin forum guidance on downgrading illustrates why preparation matters, but instructions for another watch model should not be copied blindly.

Bottom line

Garmin Forerunner 165 public beta 20.21 was a limited August 2024 rollout listing Garmin Share, device-settings Backup and Restore, Pool Swim improvements, and several fixes. Its apparent duplication of the 20.15 changelog means Garmin’s public notes did not clearly establish what was genuinely new. Treat it as an optional test build for beta participants—not as a universally available or clearly major Forerunner 165 upgrade.

This is a historical 2024 firmware story, not a claim about Garmin’s latest beta software in 2026. For current availability, always check the support history for the exact Forerunner 165 variant.
