To set a watch with a date or day display safely, identify its model or movement, then follow that watch’s manual for the crown position, setting direction, and restricted adjustment hours. These details vary by movement. Set the calendar outside its restricted window, confirm the hands are on the correct AM/PM cycle, then return and secure the crown.
Before you adjust the calendar
- Find the exact instructions. Check the watch’s model or movement number and locate the matching manufacturer manual. Crown positions and turning directions are not universal: Seiko’s 2R06 uses the first crown click for calendar setting and the second for time, while the cited Timex instructions use labeled A/B/C positions, with separate positions for the date and day.
- Determine whether the crown screws down. If it does, unlock it as the manual directs before pulling it. Push it back in and relock it after setting.
- Keep the calendar out of the restricted adjustment period. The risk window differs by movement and sometimes by display type. Use the period in your watch’s manual, not a time borrowed from another brand or model.
Set the date and day, then the time
- Move the hands clear of the restricted period. If the watch’s hands are currently within the hours when its manual prohibits calendar adjustment, first use the time-setting position to move them outside that period. The cited manuals give different limits; see the comparison below.
- Pull the crown to the calendar position. Use the position specified by the manual. Set the date and, on a day-date watch, the weekday using the stated crown direction or control. Do not assume both displays move in the same direction.
- Follow any model-specific starting point. For the mechanical Seiko 2R06 day-date, the manual instructs setting the calendar to the previous date and day before advancing the hands. This is specific to that movement, not a general requirement for all watches.
- Set the time and identify AM. Pull the crown to the time-setting position and advance the hands until the date changes. On the cited Seiko 2R06, that change marks midnight; continue advancing to the correct local time. This helps prevent a watch from displaying the right hour with its calendar changing around noon instead of midnight.
- Finish by securing the crown. Return it to its normal position, and relock it if it is a screw-down crown.
Why the restricted hours differ
Some movements engage their calendar mechanism over a span of hours around midnight. Changing the calendar while that mechanism is engaged can damage it, so the manufacturer’s stated restriction matters. The official instructions cited here give these examples:

These are examples from the named instructions, not a universal schedule. If the manual for your movement specifies a different period, follow it.

Why date and day controls may behave differently
On the cited Seiko 2R06 and Citizen E001 instructions, the date is advanced counterclockwise and the weekday clockwise. Timex’s cited day-date instructions instead describe separate crown positions and turning methods. These differences are why the exact manual should guide each calendar adjustment.

Correct the calendar after short months
A conventional calendar may not account for months shorter than 31 days. Seiko says the models covered by its instructions need manual correction after February and 30-day months. Check the manual for your watch to see whether it requires this adjustment; do not assume every calendar has the same month-end behavior.

That usually means the hands are on the opposite AM/PM cycle from the one you intend. For the cited Seiko 2R06, advance the hands until the date changes to establish the midnight transition, then continue to the correct time. Use your own movement’s manual for its time-setting procedure; this specific sequence is not established for every watch.
