Find what the dial uses instead of a conventional hour hand: a moving hour numeral, a fixed window, a digital-style numeral display, or a sequence of lights. On a wandering-hours watch, read the hour numeral at the dial’s designated reading position, then use its alignment with the minute scale or pointer to read minutes. Other designs work differently, so identify the display before interpreting it.
First, identify the display
A watch can lack a conventional hour hand and still indicate time with numerals, discs, apertures, or lights. Look for markings that appear to convey time, and determine whether they move continuously, sit in fixed windows, or appear only when you activate the watch. Don’t assume a decorative shape is a time indicator; the exact model’s instructions are the reliable guide when the reading position or markings aren’t clear.

How to read a wandering-hours watch
A wandering-hours watch uses rotating discs printed with hour numerals rather than a conventional hour hand, as watch consultant Sean May explains in his specialist explainer published September 14, 2026 (5D Watches). The numerals move around the dial; the one that reaches the designated reading position gives the current hour.

- Find the reading position. Look for a minute scale, pointer, or other clear marker on the dial that indicates where the time should be read.
- Identify the hour numeral there. That numeral is the current hour; the other moving numerals are not the hour to read at that moment.
- Read the minutes from the associated indicator. Use the scale or pointer linked to that hour numeral. The placement and markings vary by model, so follow the dial’s own conventions.
- Look for a separate seconds display, if you need it. The DWISS S1, for example, shows seconds on a central disc. Its manufacturer says the current hour numeral points to the minute scale; those details apply to the S1 specifically (DWISS S1 product page).
How other handless-looking displays work
Jump-hour watches
A jump-hour watch shows the hour numeral in a fixed aperture rather than moving hour numerals around a reading position. Read minutes from its separate indicator. In Jaipur Watch Company’s cited Black 40mm model, the long hand shows minutes and the hour disc advances when the minute hand reaches 12 (Jaipur Watch Company product page). This is a different reading method from wandering hours.

Mechanical digital numeral displays
A mechanical digital watch displays time as numerals rather than with conventional hands. A. Lange & Söhne describes the ZEITWERK as a “mechanically driven digital-display watch.” Its display uses a large hour numeral disc and two minute discs; read the numerals shown in the separate hour and minute positions (A. Lange & Söhne ZEITWERK Family).
Touch-activated light displays
Some designs reveal the time only after activation. In UnconstrainedTime’s documented implementation, a brief button press starts a sequence: an LED indicates the hour, then a light indicates a five-minute period, followed by additional flashes for the remaining minutes. The maker describes this display as showing time to the nearest minute on a 12-hour system without an AM/PM indication; these instructions apply to that implementation, not to LED watches generally (UnconstrainedTime display instructions).

If the time still isn’t clear
- Find the watch’s maker and exact model name, then consult its manual or product instructions for the designated reading position and the meaning of each scale.
- Check whether the display must be activated; an on-demand display may not show the time until you press its button.
- For a jump-hour model, distinguish the fixed hour aperture from the separate minute indicator.
- Don’t infer a time from decoration or assume that another watch with a similar artistic dial uses the same convention.
What to consider when choosing how to read it
These display types differ in how the hour and minutes are presented, how many markings you must interpret, and whether time is continuously visible or requires activation. To compare two watches, inspect the hour-reading method, minute resolution, visibility of the relevant marks, and whether you must trigger the display. These are practical comparison criteria, not claims that one type is inherently easier to read.
