Start by choosing whether you want to wind the watch yourself or have wrist motion wind it, then assess how the actual case fits your wrist and set an all-in budget that includes ownership costs. No one movement, case size, or price is right for every first-time buyer.
Choose the winding habit you want
Mechanical watches come in two main types: hand-wound and automatic. A hand-wound watch is wound at the crown. An automatic uses a rotor moved by the wearer’s wrist to wind its mainspring. As Hamilton explains, an automatic can reduce routine winding when worn consistently, but it still has a finite power reserve and can stop if left unworn longer than that reserve.

Power reserve is how long a watch runs after it has been wound. Compare the reserve listed for the specific model you are considering rather than assuming every watch with a given movement type runs for the same length of time. If an automatic stops, you may need to wind and set it again; a manual watch makes winding a regular part of ownership. Hamilton’s guide to mechanical watches explains the two winding styles and power reserve.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose hand-wound if you like the deliberate routine of winding the watch.
- Choose automatic if you expect to wear it often and prefer wrist motion to provide the winding.
- Consider quartz instead if your priority is low-maintenance timekeeping. Hamilton describes quartz watches as superior in accuracy and reliability; mechanical watches are better suited to buyers who value their construction and interaction, not those seeking the most practical timekeeper.
Check fit on your wrist, not just the diameter
Measure where the watch will sit
Measure your wrist just above the wrist bone, at the spot where you normally wear a watch. A flexible tape works; you can also wrap string around your wrist and measure the string with a ruler. This gives you a useful starting point, but it does not determine fit on its own.

Citizen UK lists broad diameter ranges of 38–46 mm for men’s watches and 26–36 mm for women’s watches, while explicitly calling them guidelines and putting personal style and comfort first. Treat those figures as rough reference ranges, not rules: fit depends on the individual wrist and watch, not gender. Citizen UK’s size guide describes the measurement and its ranges.
Assess the whole case
Diameter is only one dimension. Case shape, bezel, crown, pushers, thickness, lug span, material, and weight all affect how a watch wears. If you can, try on the actual model and check whether it feels comfortable and sits the way you want. When shopping remotely, look for the thickness and lug-to-lug measurement as well as diameter, and read the seller’s return terms in case the watch does not fit as expected. Citizen’s Canada fit guide also identifies shape, thickness, weight, and wrist measurement as fit factors.
A published example shows why a diameter figure cannot settle the question: Hodinkee described a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical with a 38 mm diameter and reported that its reviewer measured the lug-to-lug length at a little over 47 mm. The reviewer’s comments about how it looked and wore are subjective observations about that watch, not a universal fit formula. Hodinkee’s comparison is an older article, so use its dimensions as an example rather than as current model or price information.

Set a budget for buying and owning the watch
There is no evidence-backed universal price threshold for a first mechanical watch here. Rather than relying on a fixed dollar tier or an old “under $1,000” label, set the maximum you are comfortable spending and compare current prices from manufacturers and sellers for the specific watches you are considering.
Compare the full purchase, not just the advertised price. Check the seller’s return and warranty terms, and allow for possible service or a strap change if needed. A lower price is not good value if the watch is uncomfortable or does not suit the way you intend to wear it. The Hodinkee example is useful for dimensions, but its under-$1,000 framing and model details are article-era information, not confirmation of current pricing or availability.

Mechanical timekeeping varies. Citizen says rate can depend on winding, position, and temperature. It recommends winding gently, avoiding strong magnetic fields, and arranging regular service. For a mechanical watch worn daily, Citizen’s guidance recommends an overhaul every 2–3 years; that interval is specific to its daily-use advice, not a universal schedule for every watch. Check the maker’s instructions for the model you choose. Citizen Watch Global Network’s mechanical-watch care guidance covers winding, magnetic exposure, and service.

These care needs are part of the ownership decision: a mechanical watch offers a different experience from a low-maintenance timekeeper, but it asks you to accept variable rate and periodic attention. Impacts can also damage components, so consider how the watch will be used day to day.
