Astron controls and daylight-saving-time behavior vary by caliber. The steps below apply only to the 5X53 and 3X62 GPS Solar calibers; for any other caliber, use Seiko’s instruction lookup to find its guide.
How do I change the time zone on my Seiko Astron?
For both the 5X53 and 3X62, GPS time-zone adjustment requires a location with a clear view of the sky. The watch receives positioning signals to determine the local time zone; reception may not work well indoors or where buildings and other obstructions block the sky.

- Go outdoors to an open area with good visibility of the sky.
- Hold Button B for three seconds. Release it when the seconds hand reaches the 30-second position; the watch then starts reception.
- Point the watch dial upward and wait for reception to finish. Seiko gives a maximum reception time of two minutes, depending on conditions, in both the 5X53 guide and the 3X62 guide.
- Check the reception result on the watch before assuming the time has changed. On the 5X53, the result is shown as Y for success or N for failure; follow your caliber’s manual to read its indicators.
Successful reception updates the time and date on the 5X53. A time-zone adjustment changes the selected zone as well as the time; a manual time correction, by contrast, corrects the time within the already selected zone. The exact manual-correction procedure depends on the caliber, so use its corresponding guide.

After landing, use the GPS time-zone adjustment procedure above from a suitable open-sky location. Then verify that reception succeeded and that the displayed time and date are correct. Do not assume that the watch adjusted simply because you started reception.

If you are near a time-zone boundary, GPS may select a neighboring zone. Seiko notes that a zone’s boundary may not align precisely with visible land markers. When practical, perform the adjustment in a representative city away from the boundary. Otherwise, check the selected zone and use the caliber’s manual zone-setting procedure if it is wrong.
Why didn’t my Seiko Astron adjust for daylight saving time?
Daylight-saving behavior differs between these two calibers:
- 5X53: The guide describes automatic DST behavior associated with successful time-zone reception, subject to the conditions in that manual.
- 3X62: DST must be set manually, even when GPS reception succeeds. Consult the guide for the exact setting procedure.
Do not infer DST behavior from another Astron caliber. If the displayed time is off by an hour, confirm the caliber, reception result, selected zone, and DST setting using its manual.

What if reception fails or the time zone is wrong?
Improve the reception conditions
Move to an open location with a clearer view of the sky, point the dial upward, and try again. Buildings and other obstructions can interfere with reception. Use the manual’s reception-result indicators to confirm whether the attempt succeeded.
Check charge and in-flight mode
Reception may not start if the watch indicates low charge or airplane/in-flight mode. If charge is low, expose the watch to light as Seiko advises. If in-flight mode is enabled, reset it as directed in the matching manual before attempting reception again.
Check the zone near a border
A neighboring zone can be selected near a time-zone boundary. Check the displayed zone, and if necessary set the correct zone manually using the instructions for your caliber.

Consider whether zone data is outdated
Seiko’s time-zone data notice, last updated in October 2019, documents historical information for specific calibers and warns that an official time-zone change can leave GPS zone reception unable to produce the correct local time. The notice’s dates describe the data covered by that notice; they do not establish present-day global zone coverage. If a zone has changed officially, select the current zone manually and then adjust the time manually, following your caliber’s guide: Seiko GPS Solar time-zone data notice.

Read the caliber code on the case back, then select that code in Seiko’s official instruction lookup. Do not apply the 5X53 or 3X62 button sequence or DST instructions to another caliber unless its own manual confirms them.
