Controls and sensors vary by model: a watch may offer a compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, sunrise and sunset times, or only some of these. These are useful reference tools, not a dedicated survival or rescue system.
Find your watch’s module and matching guide
Look for the module number on the case back or in the watch’s paperwork. Use that number to open the corresponding Casio operation guide before trying a button sequence. The module 5713 guide, for example, covers compass, altitude, barometric pressure, temperature, sunrise and sunset, altitude records, a stopwatch, and a timer. Module 3553 documents a similar but not identical feature set. Do not assume another G-SHOCK has the same modes or controls.

Start with Casio’s watch support and operation-guide directory, then search for your module number. Read the guide’s specific procedure for each task; the overview pages link to detailed instructions, and the exact button steps are model-specific.
Use the compass for direction and bearings
On module 5713, Compass Mode can indicate north and help check a bearing to a destination. The guide also describes saving a bearing in Bearing Memory and calibrating compass readings, including magnetic-declination calibration for true-north readings. Follow the procedure in your module’s guide for calibration and bearing setup rather than applying another model’s button sequence.

Keep the watch away from permanent magnets, metal objects, high-voltage wires, aerial wires, and electrical household appliances when taking readings or calibrating; Casio says readings and calibration may not be possible near these sources. For serious trekking, mountain climbing, or similar activities, Casio’s 5713 guide says: “Whenever using the Digital Compass of this watch for serious trekking, mountain climbing, or other activities, be sure to always take along another compass to confirm readings.”
Read altitude as a pressure-based estimate
The 5713 altimeter estimates altitude from air pressure measured by the watch’s built-in pressure sensor. Its guide covers checking current altitude, setting an altitude offset, measuring the difference from a reference point, choosing an automatic measurement interval, recording readings, and selecting units.

Pressure changes with weather, so the displayed altitude at one place can vary over time and may differ from the actual elevation or the sea-level elevation shown for that area. When climbing, calibrate against a known local altitude indication and consult your module’s guide for the offset procedure. Treat the result as a useful relative estimate rather than a surveyed elevation.

Barometric pressure
The 5713 Barometer Mode displays local pressure and supports viewing trends and changes between readings. It also provides sudden-pressure-change indications, pressure-offset calibration, and unit selection. These features help you observe what the sensor is registering; an indication is not a guarantee that a particular weather event will occur.

Temperature
The thermometer can take a current air-temperature reading. The 5713 guide provides procedures for checking and calibrating readings, selecting units, and observing temperature precautions. Do not treat a watch worn against your body as a promise of precise ambient air temperature; use the module guide’s precautions and regard readings as general reference.
Check sunrise and sunset for the configured city
Module 5713 can display sunrise and sunset times for the configured Home City, including times for a specified day. Check that the Home City and date are set correctly in your module’s guide before relying on the result. Settings and availability can differ across modules.

Use records and timers when your module supports them
The 5713 guide also includes altitude-record recall, stopwatch, and timer modes. These can help with trip notes and timing tasks, but available modes and their controls depend on the module in your watch. Consult its guide before planning around a feature.

Understand the limits of these functions
Casio’s 2023 module 3553 operation guide states: “This watch is not a special-purpose measuring instrument. Measurement function readings are intended for general reference only.” The 5713 guide separately advises carrying another compass for serious trekking and mountain climbing. In practice, do not rely on watch sensors in place of navigation training, a map, a dedicated compass, or sound trip planning.
